Browns cut safety Calvin Pryor

On the same day that it was reported defensive end Myles Garrett could miss the entire month of September with a high ankle sprain, the Cleveland Browns released safety Calvin Pryor III after a scuffle with a teammate Ricardo Louis. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport first reported the news.

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the fight was with wide receiver Ricardo Louis.

The Athletic’s Zac Jackson reported head coach Hue Jackson confirmed Pryor’s release.

The Browns acquired Pryor from the New York Jets this offseason in a trade for veteran linebacker Demario Davis. The Browns took on the $1.6 million guaranteed contract, while the Jets took back the non-guaranteed contract of Davis. ESPN’s Rich Cimini reported Pryor’s attitude was a bigger reason for the Jets to look to get rid of him compared to the minor savings on the cap.

Pryor’s attitude also soured people in the organization. They felt he had an inflated opinion of himself and didn’t buy into Bowles’ program. Look at it this way: They could’ve easily kept him as a backup — salary-wise, it was doable — but they wanted him out of the locker room ASAP.

They were curious to see how he’d respond to the Adams and Maye additions, and when he didn’t show up for the first day of OTA practices … well, it confirmed their impression of him. On Tuesday, he was demoted to third string.

Being released from the Browns before playing a regular season snap might be a death knell for the career of the disappointing former first-round pick. Pryor will have to convince yet another team that he can work hard and be a team player despite all career evidence to the contrary thus far.

For the Browns, the decision by the front office to only roster four cornerbacks and four safeties appears to be folly. With defensive co-ordinator Gregg Williams preferring to play nickel defense to counter three-wide offensive sets, there is an argument to be made that there are zero backup safeties currently on the roster for Sunday’s Week 1 game versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. It also puts more pressure on Ibraheim Campbell to step up as he will have to play many more snaps.

There are still three days until the Browns play a regular season game and the bad news keeps piling up on the Browns.

    Character counts.

BTW, Michael, “roster” is a noun not a verb, okay? Like “gift” is a noun not a verb. Can we please stop the madness? It’s not clever, it’s not hip, it’s not trendy. It’s dumb.

  • Eric G

Starting to look like I may need to go back on picking the Browns this week.

  • BenRM

Jeez man. Not a great lead up to the season with this and Myles and maybe Louis.

  • mgbode

Roster can be either a verb or a noun dependent upon its usage. OK?

    http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/dictionary/american/roster_2
    VERB [TRANSITIVE]
to include someone’s name on a roster

Let us now squabble amongst ourselves though. We need to come together for what portends to be a rough game on Sunday.

I lived in CLT when Smith beat up a wide receiver who never played another down in the NFL after that. I thought they should have cut him then and still do even though he went on to a prolific career. Good riddance.

  • Harv

Not even sure – does Pryor play free or strong safety? I saw Denver cut TJ Ward the other day, probably for salary reasons. I know he doesn’t fit in the HBT box, but would love to see him back with the team that patiently groomed him.

  • mgbode

There was a Browns safety preview that came out at a wonderful Cleveland local website today, which had described in detail the strengths and weaknesses of Pryor…

I’ll take any talent at safety no matter the position at this phase of the season. Would love TJ Ward, but he escaped from Cleveland. I’d be shocked for him to come back if he has other options.

  • Pat Leonard

He’s supposedly signing with the Bucs.

  • MartyDaVille

Squabble? You call the battle for the survival of civilized society a squabble?

Okay, fine. If you want to hasten the decline and collapse of the English language into a meaningless slop of cutesy misuse and trendoid buzzwords, that’s your choice. But I will not stand by quietly and watch beloved institutions disintegrate into vapid babble without whining about it.

BTW, do you think Haden will cornerback well this week?

  • tigersbrowns2

hmmmm , “roster” … I wonder if this is what Pryor & Louis were fighting about …

  • tigersbrowns2

hi ERIC … i picked them as well . they still win , even without Garrett.

  • tigersbrowns2

    yes , sir … the kiss-of-death , you are … LMFAO !!!

  • tigersbrowns2

    … he did.

  • mgbode

You are talking about the decline and collapse of the English language while ignoring that the usage of the word within the context of the article is as intended by the British.

As for Haden, I believe the Browns will be happy with his skills at cornerback for the first time since 2014 this weekend.

  • mgbode

No. I heard from a source that it was over the proper spelling of OK.

  • mgbode

Only for the Browns. When I write about an Indians player, such as the defensive talents of Carlos Santana, they reward me with great play.

  • tigersbrowns2

    it’s O-K-A-Y … but that’s OK.

  • mgbode

The AP style guide and most refined sources have it as OK.

  • tigersbrowns2

MARTY hasn’t been the same since they cut Haden … can’t blame him. one of the few good draft picks & bright spots for the Browns since 1999. MARTY will either see the light if Haden does not play well , or he will be even more pissed if he does play well. I personally will want to talk to him on Monday & see what he thinks.

  • tigersbrowns2

WDWS … what does Webster say ??

  • tigersbrowns2

BTW … if you don’t mind , i may be out-of-commission tomorrow , so please add my 6-10 prediction to the heap … thanks.

  • Pat Leonard

Wow… one year deal worth $5M… what gives?? Must have had a really down 2016.

  • Skulb

    Well that was stupid.

  • Skulb

You should streamline your synergies and be more forward thinking. It would be good for your personal wellness. Then you can circle back to the gridiron when you have thought outside the box for a while. At the end of the day I think that will make the optics better. You need to think meta to achieve organic growth.

PS: Sorry, but those were all the cliches and buzzwords I could think of off the top of my head. I’ll do better next time.

  • tigersbrowns2

i don’t know for sure , but the Broncos may be up against it as far as their salary cap … we sure don’t have to worry about that kind of stuff.

  • tigersbrowns2

ROSTER is a British verb … OK / OKAY is both a verb & a noun – source : Webster

  • Pat Leonard

Word nerds HATE Webster… just be warned. They don’t view it as an official publication.

  • Pat Leonard

No this is what the Bucs signed him to after he was cut, not his Broncos salary.

  • Skulb

It’s almost as if writing on a blog doesn’t really change the physical Universe after all! I’m blown away. Clearly, these are the Endtimes.

  • tigersbrowns2

i knew what you meant … he probably was making more in Denver & they may’ve had cap issues.

  • tigersbrowns2

the Broncos saved 4.5 million $ by cutting him … a-la Joe Haden.

  • tigersbrowns2

    noted … well , I’m old & I have a complete set of Webster dictionaries & encyclopedias … so , it’s Webster for me.

  • tigersbrowns2

i can hear some of today’s college kids : “what’s an encyclopedia ?”

  • Skulb

Webster hardback and Webster online are not the same thing. The fundamental problem of the web is that it is a potential memory hole, where things are and can always be added, removed or changed. I like the online etymology dictionary myself. I find that it always helps to know what words originally meant anyway, whether it’s in Latin, Greek, Norse or any of the other languages English has been inflected by over the last millennium.

  • tigersbrowns2

thank you , sir … and good to see you posting again.

  • Pat Leonard

    He’s older than I thought he was… he’s 30 years old… maybe that’s why he only grabbed a 1-year deal instead of 2 or 3?

  • paulbip

I moved from Cleveland to Georgia forty years ago and it has been my passion to teach these people how to speak proper English. When I listen to the dialogue in places like the Waffle House, I hear things like, ” Hit don’t matter”. I respond by saying, ” It doesn’t matter”. My answer is, “That’s right, hit don’t”.
By the way, I don’t want to hear “center around” from any sport writer. You “center on” and “revolve around”.

  • mgbode

    Stay safe this weekend, sir.

  • MartyDaVille

    I am a selective stickler.

    Okay?

  • MartyDaVille

Skulb, you drilled down on that pretty well. But what’s the view from 30,000 feet?

  • Harv

    bravo, Tiges

  • Harv

dude, unlike you this guy has finite concentration and energy. I can’t keep up with my work emails; no way can I digest the legendary deluge that is your WFNY output. Today’s necessary choice was Tribe + that irresistible dollop of Browns injury mojo.

  • mgbode

It was simply a playful poke Harv. The only harm meant by it being self-inflicted about the time I wasted detailing out Pryor’s profile.

  • Harv

Oh I know friend, I was joking as well. My tone morphed badly in the wash

  • scripty

Once a news writer, you are forever swarn to AP Style Guide and the Gregg’s Reference Manual for life.

  • scripty

His main issue was that he could play both but neither well.

  • mgbode

The issue with a text-only discourse. A good thing Haiku Friday is almost upon us.

  • Skulb

Gees, another obnoxious performance by the Patriots. How good can you be every year without inviting bad karma?
