Indians split doubleheader; win nine of 10 in Minnesota

The Minnesota Twins came into their series with the Cleveland Indians riding high. They had won seven-of-eight games and had pulled themselves back above .500. The Tribe proved too much for them by dominating in the first two games by a combined score of 17-4 and dropping the Twins record back to 59-59. Paul Molitor and his bunch were able to scrape together their first win over the Indians though in the finale, 4-2, to preserve some measure of dignity though the standings show them in third place in the AL Central Division with six games to make up.

For the Tribe, the biggest news on the day was Jose Ramirez being hit on the forearm by a pitch. He immediately left the first game of the double-header and the situation appeared dire. Thankfully, he somehow managed to escape with only a bruise and was even available to pinch hit in the second game. Giovanny Urshela did his best Ramirez imitation in the first game by hitting 2-for-3 at the plate, but his defense in the second game helped the Twins score a crucial run.

Rather than breaking down the minutia though, let’s enjoy GIF Friday with wall-to-wall highlights of the action. Feel free to post your favorite Tribe related GIFs in the comments.

I thought Francona was brilliant in Game 2 yesterday throwing Clev and Trev. Not only saved arms for an important KC series, but also a preview of playoff usage. We won’t use 5 starters, and may not even need 4. Having these guys ready to come out the pen could be crucial.

  • Steve

I am the complete opposite. We got one total out from Allen and Smith yesterday. With Kluber on the mound tonight, Miller coming back, and Armstrong for Olson/Almonte waiting at the airport, we didn’t have such a dire need to save pen arms.

  • mgbode

Also, if we were going to use Bauer & Clevinger anyway…

Why did we have Shaw attempt two innings?
Why did we give Bauer a dirty inning?

Anyway, time to stamp out some Royals.

  • mgbode

Interested about the format for this one. What do y’all think about the wall-to-wall highlight look?

  • Steve

I’m ok with trying to stretch Shaw through a second inning against the bottom of the order. I think they should have tried to get four plus outs from Otero and McAllister too considering the double header. They may have with the latter, but he didn’t pitch all that well.

But yes, give Bauer a clean inning, and it felt to me like he was locked in from the outset to get length out of Clevinger regardless of how game two went. Goody or Allen could have been saved from game one, and used in game two with Smith to give us a bit better chance at finding a win.

  • jpftribe

Yeah, the two Shaw innings bothered me, but I also fully expected him to come back out.

The Bauer / Clev thing to me was classic Tito. Opportunity to see what happens now, because there’s a strong likelihood it will come up in the postseason.

  • mgbode

I agree w/ you both. It seemed Tito was honed in on getting Clevinger a certain pitch count & putting Bauer into an awkward spot just to see what happened more than going for the win.

  • jpftribe

I’m completely shocked we see things differently. 🙂

Seriously tho, nothing wrong with that line of thought. Also agree that there was no need to bring Allen into that game.

  • Steve

Well, supposedly Bauer volunteered in game two. He was throwing a bullpen anyway, and told Francona to put him in.

Why Francona can’t be the boss and say “no, we just traded for this really good reliever to pitch in high leverage spots for us” is beyond me though.

  • Steve

Bluntly (as if I could do it any other way)? I love more words, especially the deep dives, but I understand how much work that is. I’ve got the highlights in my pocket the moment the game ends. The advantage this site presents is a better analysis over everyone else.

  • Steve

I would like the opportunity to see what happens when Smith pitches. Are we sure we actually acquired him?

  • jpftribe

I prefer some separation between the highlights, and also agree with Steve that the analysis is great. I rarely follow on my phone. Most of my consumption comes from a desktop.

  • mgbode

Thank you, and yes, this type would never replace those. We do multimedia formats like this one from time to time just to make sure we have something up for people to talk about the game.

Usually have a couple sentences between the clips, but I wanted to see what people thought about just having the words at the top and preferences.

  • mgbode

It’s funny. Apparently, Bauer volunteers to be in the bullpen nearly every single game (basically as long as it is not the day after a start).

Would love to see someone create SNL skits based on Indians characters for this type of stuff. Hmmm….

  • mgbode

OK, thanks. Seems consensus from at least you two is that the other MM style is preferred. Much appreciated.

  • tsm

Agree with my brothers. Analysis superior to highlights, which we can get from our phones. Your analysis is of great benefit.

  • scripty

Not a fan. Not saying you need text, but it’s the visual equivalent of Cormac McCarthy prose. Just throw a line of blankness in between.

  • pnikhilrao

I was mystified when Carrasco came out after 5 innings. Did anyone see an explanation for that? I was following game on my phone and couldn’t figure that out – especially since we had the second game of a double-header to go and a (relatively) unproven starter on the mound for game 2.

  • mgbode

94 pitches. Tito probably didn’t see a need to have him for just one or two batters.

  • mgbode

Will do in the future, thank you.

  • mgbode

Yes, yes. I should have been more clear. In no way does this replace our analysis. Only on the days from time-to-time we don’t have someone mining the data sites for more of it.

  • Garry_Owen

Variety is the spice of life.

  • Garry_Owen

    Do it. It’s fun.

  • mgbode

Do you prefer this type of post to have words or space between the videos was the main question.

  • Garry_Owen

I don’t think “preference” is in it for me. That was my point. I like what you did; I would probably like those other formats, too.

  • mgbode

    Ah, fair. Thanks.
