August 26, 2017The esteemed David Zavac joined Jeff Nomina to talk about the Cavaliers after the blockbuster Kyrie Irving trade. David is the former editor to Fear the Sword and, using his experience covering the team, wrote an incredible piece exploring Kyrie Irving and his time in Cleveland.
There are an endless number of storylines that have come from this trade and David helps break down as many as possible. Looking specifically at the upcoming season, Jeff and David explore if the Cavaliers are a better team both for the regular season and the playoffs. Isaiah Thomas put together an amazing season last year, and likely provides a boost during the regular season next year. That being said, he has an injury that could sideline him for the first few weeks and will need to generate chemistry with his new teammates on the fly. There’s also the issue of his defense during the playoffs. Jae Crowder is a nice piece that provides depth and a wealth of riches for the Cavaliers on the wing, with LeBron James, Crowder, J.R. Smith, Kyle Korver, Jeff Green, Cedi Osman, Iman Shumpert, and Richard Jefferson.
Individually, there will be interesting storylines developing for multiple players. LeBron James seems as motivated as ever, and will likely look to push for one last MVP in the wake of Kyrie’s departure. Isaiah Thomas has made it clear he expects a max contract when his contract expires after next season, and will need to prove his worth with another monster season. Kyrie Irving has always played the game his way and is going to a team with a dominant personality in head coach Brad Stevens. Can they co-exist?
Also explored was the Brooklyn Nets pick acquired in the trade and how the Cavaliers will look at it moving forward. Can the Cavs trade such a valuable piece without assurances from LeBron that he’s staying in Cleveland? They will surely be involved in every major trade rumor that pops up, which is nothing new since they acquired Kevin Love.
