Anti-information coverage and the Response it Engenders
August 23, 2017A look at the Details Behind the Cavs’ Kyrie Irving trade
August 23, 2017Hue Jackson said he would be honest and forthright in his postgame press conference on Monday night, and it appears the film showed him the same thing fans saw over the first two weeks of the preseason. On Wednesday morning, the Cleveland Browns announced that rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer will be the starting quarterback for the team’s third preseason game.
“This morning, I informed our quarterbacks that DeShone will be our starter for the third preseason game against Tampa,” Jackson said via press release. “He has made a lot of progress by investing the time necessary to learn our offense, working hard to improve on his fundamentals while also effectively moving the offense in preseason games. Development is so important for a young quarterback, this is the next step he needs to take and he deserves this opportunity. We are very excited about seeing DeShone in the role of starter for this week, as he is certainly positioning himself well to earn the starting job heading into the regular season.
“Much like DeShone, Brock [Osweiler], Cody [Kessler] and Kevin [Hogan] have worked extremely hard throughout training camp and have helped create a very supportive environment in our quarterback room. They’ve pushed each other, worked well together and we expect that to continue.”
As referenced in our Week 2 “Winners and Losers” column, Kizer far outplayed erstwhile starter Brock Osweiler, the latter deriving zero points in his two starts. Meanwhile, Kizer completed 19-of-31 passes for 258 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 47 yards and a touchdown, and led drives totaling 24 points.
One thing fans will immediately notice is the lack of commitment for Week 1. Week 3 of the preseason is typically used as the “dress rehearsal” for the regular season.1
“I think this was another step in the process for DeShone,” Jackson said later Wednesday morning. “He has gotten better each and every week. He is showing the characteristics that I look for in our quarterback. When I looked back and looked at everything and thought through it all, it was best to give him this opportunity to walk out there again. I think he has a right to earn the opening start by the way he plays, and I think he knows that. He is trending in the right direction with our offensive football team. I thought hey, let’s give him a chance to go play and see if he can show and demonstrate those characteristics to the rest of our team, the staff and the organization.”
When asked about putting the Week 1 discussion “to bed,” Jackson offered the following:
“Well, it is in the bed,” he said. “It is definitely in the bed with me so I am very close to putting it to bed. Again, a lot of things can happen over the next several weeks. You just never know, but I feel good about the covers that are on top of me right now. We are doing well.”
Osweiler, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, is not expected to take a single snap in the game. Jackson said Week 3 will be used for the “young” players—Kizer, Cody Kessler, and Kevin Hogan.
- It’s worth noting that Kizer will have Joe Thomas in uniform for his first start, a drastic improvement over what he dealt with in Weeks 1 and 2. [↩]

have we ever known Hue to be anything other than honest & forthright … the players , coaches & FO must really love this guy … i know i do.
Hue went with the best guy … end of story. this also means we are not sitting as good as we think at QB … we know what we’re going to get from Osweiler , but Kessler is a major disappointment in that he couldn’t win the starting job for at least this year. i can’t see us keeping a $16 million dollar a year back-up … i’m almost wondering of Osweiler will get released/traded & Kevin Hogan makes the squad.
And so it begins….
May the Force be with you young Jedi Kizer.
One important stat that doesn’t get brought up enough is that Kizer has taken 5 sacks, and Brock hasn’t taken any.
Kizer should be the starter. He’s played less badly than the other two. But that sack number needs to change in a hurry.
I’m wondering who will be our other 2 starters after we cycle through the four guys on the roster.
hi BEN … i would say “better” instead of “less badly” … he’s a rookie , he’ll learn. Kizer is the one making things happen & putting points on the board. i think was was an easy decision for Hue.
You are on team sunnyside, after all 🙂
Kizer still definitely looks like a rookie to me. A talented one to be sure. And one who looks like he could become pretty good.
But I think this competition was more about what Kessler and Brock failed to do, than it is about what Kizer did.
hi JPF … we’re pretty much going to pay Os all / most of his salary , so they probably keep him … i’m also wondering if Kessler is in danger of losing his spot to Hogan.
Wow, I’m generally surprised. But I gotta give Hue credit, he’s not taking the safe route. But just because all our other rookie QBs didn’t do very well doesn’t mean that Kizer won’t. And despite Notre Dame’s poor record last year, the offense did put up a fair amount of points, save for low-scoring games against N.C. State and Stanford.
So come September, make room for DeShone.

They better get the O-line sorted, or the yinzers are going to fold, spindle, and mutilate him.
Joe Thomas is returning- helps a bit
Boy RGB, this is one time I’d really like for both of us to look completely foolish, but it sure seems like a massive, unnecessary risk.
Zeitler’s performance, although not concerning yet, has raised my eyebrow a bit.
He is going to be playing next to the weakest link on the O-lne…
Sure. We’ll see what happens with all lights turned on. Been a hodge-podge of players next to each other thus far, which always hurts an OL.
Man I would hope not. If he’s not running the option, I don’t trust Hogan. As bad as Kessler has been in the two preseason games, asking Hogan to throw the ball is a huge risk in and of itself.
Just imagine this line if we hadn’t just let Schwartz walk…

Shon Coleman hasn’t been that bad. He’s no John “Turnstile” St. Clair (or Mitchell Schwartz in his rookie year).
or Kevin “Neck tie” Shaffer
What if it isn’t Kessler who might lose his spot to Hogan…
Glad to see Kizer got the nod, and I had a feeling he would. If Osweiler had been able to move the offense in these first two preseason games, I think we would have seen him as the starter, but the fact that he couldn’t and Kizer did was enough for Hue. I’m tired of watching losing football and I don’t think starting Kizer will inhibit or hurt his future in any way, so I’m happy to see the move. The Browns may still lose (a lot), but at least they’ll be giving it their best shot, and the players on the team will know that is the case with Kizer at the helm.
Or Oniel “OH NO!” Cousins
Then I’m nervously watching every hit on our QBs this year. I’m no Brock apologist, but any scenario that sees Kevin Hogan trying to throw footballs is the worst scenario I can imagine at QB.

Yeah, it’s looking like the Brockster will not be wearing an orange helmet next week.
If I was a bigger d-bag, I would ask Brock who that person is. There is no GM of the Browns. There’s an Executive Vice President of Football Operations, but no GM.
It’s becoming obvious who the d-bag is, and it ain’t in the Browns staff, FO, beat reporting or FNY commentariat.
“I think that’s a great question for our general manager.” -Brock when asked what he needs to do to start again.
Man, I loathe Osweiler’s attitude & entitlement. He must have a different batch of “film” to watch than the rest of us.
or Lomas “I’m so bad that fans wouldn’t even give me a nickname” Brown
Hate to say it but I think he’s been pretty lucky in the preseason. The Giants bailed him out at least twice with penalties, one took away a horrible interception. The Osweiler offense hasn’t gone anywhere. Kizer’s goes backwards then he has the big play to get them back moving forward. Converting 3rd & 30 every drive is not going to happen in the regular season.
You aren’t wrong. But I would suggest that converting 3rd & 30 is much more likely with Kizer than with Brock (from what we’ve seen). So there’s that…I guess?
Cleveland gets to experience what Houston did last season. In addition to being bad on the field, Brock is an entitled, disruptive douche bag.
Very true. He’s been the best of a bad bunch.
Scuttlebutt is Osweiler to the Colts…
Haven’t seen much of Kizer. Osweiler on the other hand, I have. One of the reasons I’m guessing he hasn’t taken any sacks is because he locks onto a receiver and then delivers the ball whether the guy is open or not.
I’m hoping Indy gets to experience it.
(hey, it worked w/ Trent Richardson!)
Speaking of Mr. Richardson, he nearly signed with the Saskatchewan Roughriders yesterday, but decided against it since it’d be a two-year deal.
I thought it was because he had to walk into the next room to sign the contract and he couldn’t find the opening.
Very possible. You’d think the Roughriders would have known enough to make sure the contract wasn’t more than 3.3 yards away.
Does this mean that we’re all into “butt stuff” for the time being?
I remember being semi-excited when we signed him.
Well, he’s not playing Sunday, so that may be a good sign he’s outta here.
EDIT: Aww jeeze, I just realized, if we jettison Ossweiler, the Kaepernick SJWs will descend upon us.
I really miss this show. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ac329ad096b9a464031bbea3c15530f0cc876262e090df552c260d54746fa892.jpg
We were all pretty much stuck in either excited or semi-excited state in the run up to 1999
I haven’t seen much of him, and always lean towards the benefit of the doubt, especially having to deal with the O’Brien regime. But yeah, this is not a good look for him in CLE, or any NFL circle.
The Freeman article comparing him to Warner is nutso. This was his 3rd opportunity to make his mark. He chose to take the money, and his chances in HOU. Man up and live with the consequences of your decisions.
So good…well except for the last season or so.
I don’t acknowledge the seasons after Donald Glover left the show.
Brock is a turd w/o the benefit of even being in a punchbowl.

That is a perfectly acceptable way to conduct one’s life.
