Ohio State gets seven players drafted in NFL Draft, four signed as UDFA

Heading into the 2016 college football season, there were plenty of unknowns for the Ohio State Buckeyes. They knew that they had a ton of talent coming back and plenty of new talent that hadn’t gotten a chance to prove themselves, but head coach Urban Meyer didn’t know just how good they would be. Although they lost to Clemson in the College Football Playoff semifinals, the scarlet and gray proved that they can be one of the best teams in the country even during a so-called “rebuilding year”.

With all of the talent on the roster, this past weekend’s NFL Draft was filled with plenty of talent from Ohio State. Let’s run down the Buckeyes who were drafted:

CB Marshon Lattimore, No. 11 to New Orleans Saints

The first Buckeye off the board, Lattimore was one of three former Ohio State defensive backs to be taken in the first round. He will most likely be the team’s top cornerback right away and will join former Buckeyes safety Vonn Bell, wide receiver Michael Thomas, and speedster Ted Ginn Jr. in the Big Easy.

S Malik Hooker, No. 15 to Indianapolis Colts

Hooker was one of the biggest surprises of the first round, dropping to 15th after being projected as a top-10 talent. The Colts were very happy to get such a talented safety in the middle of the first round. He will be their starting safety from Day 1 and look to lead Indianpolis’ secondary with his ball-hawking ability. Hooker joins John Simon, Johnathan Hankins, and Jack Mewhort in Indy.

Due to the fact that he watched the draft at home rather than attend it in Philadelphia, the star safety was able to play as himself on Madden immediately after he was selected:

CB Gareon Conley, No. 24 to Oakland Raiders

Originally projected to be a first-round selection, Conley’s status was put on hold after being accused of raping a woman in Cleveland on April 9. After denying the allegations, the Raiders took the chance on one of the best cornerbacks in the draft, a chance that could be well worth it if Conley is telling the truth.

He is the fourth Ohio State cornerback to be selected in the first round of the draft in the last four years, proving just how good the Buckeyes have been at producing NFL talent, especially in the defensive backfield. This all but assures that Ohio State and the Silver Bullets are the new #DBU.

The scarlet and gray are the first team to have three defensive backs selected in the first round since Miami (Florida) did so in 2002. They are also the first team in NFL history to have three cornerbacks picked in the first round over a two-year span.

WR Curtis Samuel, No. 40 to Carolina Panthers

The hybrid wide out was expected to be selected in the second round, but the fact that the Panthers took him was somewhat surprising after they selected Stanford hybrid wide receiver Christian McCaffrey with their eighth-overall pick. Either way, Samuel will give Carolina quarterback Cam Newton yet another weapon on the outside.

He is the third Ohio State wide receiver to be selected in the second round of the draft in as many years. After getting the game-clinching touchdown against Michigan, he will look to make even more plays with his speed in Carolina.

LB Raekwon McMillan, No. 54 to Miami Dolphins

The seventh Ohio State linebacker taken in as many years, McMillan will head to South Beach with plenty to prove. Some doubted him due to him not putting up big numbers on the stat sheet, but the linebacker proved that he can be a very good one in the NFL throughout his career in Columbus.

C Pat Elflein, No. 7o to Minnesota Vikings

Named college football’s best center in 2016, Elflein was the second center taken off the board in the draft. While proving that he can play multiple positions along the offensive line while at Ohio State, the Vikings got a very good one. He is very talented on the field, but his leadership and intangibles could be what Minnesota notices the most. He will compete for a starting spot right off the gate.

WR Noah Brown, No. 239 to Dallas Cowboys

Last but certainly not least, Brown joins Pro Bowl running back Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas. In fact, Zeke was one of the reasons why Dallas decided to draft the wide out, recruiting him to the Cowboys ever since he was draft by them in 2016.

Although he was a seventh-round pick, Brown’s strength and ability to go get the ball can force the Cowboys to not only keep him on the team in the fall, but also give him playing time during his rookie season.

Signed as undrafted free agents:

  • WR Dontre Wilson, Los Angeles Chargers
  • P Cameron Johnston, Philadelphia Eagles
  • ST specialist Craig Fada, Houston Texans
  • WR Corey Smith. Cincinnati Bengals
