May 4, 2017Early results not good for Indians defense: Between Innings
May 5, 2017It’s Friday and I’m trying to think about sports, but it’s difficult. As always, feel free to use this as an open thread to kick off the weekend…
I missed the last Cavaliers playoff game (for the most part) because I had previously purchased tickets to see Bill Burr at Hilarities. Despite my sports addiction, I prioritized a theater-level comedic talent in a small club over the Cavs’ playoff game. There’s a version of myself that is more conflicted, but it’s hard to get too uptight about it in hindsight seeing what the Cavaliers did to the Raptors in Game 2. Despite this one-night preference for Bill Burr, I’m doing everything I can to not take this team for granted, but it’s difficult.
The Cavaliers may not get to the NBA Finals, but if they don’t it will be their own failings. They are clearly the best team in the east by a longshot. The Cavaliers still have to play well and take care of business, but they really shouldn’t lose based on talent. I was thinking about it and if you look at any of the teams left in the eastern conference, I don’t think I’m being crazy when I say that Kyle Korver might be the second or third best player on each of the remaining teams other than the Cavaliers. We could split hairs over that assessment, but I think it’s safe to say if you added Korver to either Washington or Boston right now, it would put one of the teams in the driver’s seat over the other. Â Speaking of that series…
FIREWORKS IN WASHINGTON
Our old friend Kelly Olynyk was at it again in Washington. He set a big pick on Oubre and Oubre lost his mind and embodied every post-Kevin Love arm socket Cavs fan that wanted blood. For his efforts, he was ejected. Here’s what it looked like.

Movie Trailer: The Dark Tower
I don’t read Stephen King books. I mean, I’m a human from the United States so I’m sure I’ve read one somewhere along the line, but generally speaking I don’t read him. That’s usually a failing strategy for movie fans as well, as the movies based on Stephen King properties aren’t usually all that great. The Dark Tower, however, is one time where a movie trailer has me damn glad I’ve never read the book. I wouldn’t want to ruin the movie!
Last but not least, I have to double back to the beginning and tell you how amazing it was to see Bill Burr back at Hilarities. I saw Burr there probably eight or nine years ago with my wife before he became one of the biggest comics in the country. The last time he was in Cleveland (maybe last year?) he played a couple shows at a giant theater in Playhouse Square. The idea that you could walk into Hilarities and see him perform this week in Cleveland was really special. Burr has become one of those comics that can say anything he wants with little to no repercussions. He uses that latitude wisely to push the boundaries of polite conversation and cultural convention. He does it without coming off as crotchety and out of touch. I feel like I got a sneak preview into some of what his next special on Netflix will be like and I can’t wait to see these bits in their mature, finished form sometime in the future.
That’s it for me, guys. Enjoy your weekend!

Agree, and do not think in any way the Cavs go 12-0, but they were exposed against Indiana while still finding ways to go 4-0.
I’d like to see Barry Allen and Wally West run…(yes that’s my contribution to this comment thread)
I think Korver is our secret weapon. His overall game outside of 3-point sniping is much better than anyone anticipated.
Wall is awesome.
Porter wins the award for being the only decent player in the worst draft in decades.
Beal is….moody? I don’t know. I can’t get a feel for that guy. Sometimes he’s amazing and I wish the Wizards hadn’t drafted him just before the Cavs. Other times, he looks like he’s sulking over the fact that he’s not Wall.
…I’m still Team Elba for the next Doctor Who….
Meh. Obviously political and rhetorical metaphor.
Bill Burr is a pre-existing condition that is DEFINITELY not covered.
That’s true, the sword cuts both ways, and it’s unfair to call somebody’s opinion on policy racist. I sometimes get frustrated that as a white man, no matter how un-racist and un-sexist I may be, it’s perfectly fine for some people around me to assume I’m sexist and/or racist. But I try to remind myself that such unfairness is a tiny, tiny taste of what it’s like to experience real injustice, then I count my blessings.
I’ll reach out when I am done. Maybe be a few mos.
oh man – Evicted sounds right up my alley. I’ll get it and report back after I finish reading Goodnight Moon.
I have friends on both ends of the political spectrum. Neither of which I ever discuss politics with. Ever. But one portion of them will absolutely accuse you of misogyny if they know you didn’t vote for Mrs. Clinton.
Too bad Peter Maximoff isn’t a US citizen. I’m a Marvel guy.
Wouldn’t the Cavs getting a test be good for them in preparation for the Finals vs Golden State?
If they cannot beat the Wiz, then they aren’t beating the Dubs, right?
The Quicksilver scene in X-Men Apocalypse almost saved the movie. Almost.
If you like words, you like Studs. Between him and Gay you never have to read another thing.
Can’t get behind that. How am I supposed to believe that a generationally racist, discriminatory, and hierarchical society can elevate a black man to “Smart Cookie and National Hero” status? That’s right – I used the Oxford Comma, too.
Sure. But only one of many, many examples of…questionable content…coming from him. And this one is actually rather tame/sane compared to some of his work (Sharia law at Wal-Mart, Obama supporters a threat to the gene pool, Al Jazeera Network might kidnap me). Above all else, regardless of political stripe, I ask first and foremost that my politicians not have me questioning their humanity and/or sanity on a regular basis. Allen West doesn’t pass that test for me.
But the Wiz might take more out of the Cavs.
When they’ll need all their wits about them to conquer Golden Showers – er, State – for the title, they can’t afford to drink all the analgesic in the Conference Finals.
I’d take Woody Allen and Cornell West.
Or Barry Gibb and Wally World.
Love Bill Burr!
Sorry.

read this article about how he crafts his first lines and you’ll want to read his books. It’s a really worthwhile article if you’re at all interested in either King or the craft.

There is zero chance of this happening. He’d be 45 years old before filming starts and they’d get maybe 2 years out of him before he’s 50? Just on production schedules alone, it’s almost inconceivable.

Have you watched “F Is For Family” on Netflix? It’s a bit, err, over the top, but at least once an episode I find myself with the shoulder-shake laughs that cause a rewind to hear the joke again.
Personally I have trouble with people who voted for either of the two primary candidates last fall and didn’t have to hold their nose to do so. I’ve heard reasonable justifications for either side being a moral choice (maybe easier since I feel no party or candidate really represented me this time around) based on specific issues or concerns, but I can’t respect a person who justified serious flaws in the name of ideology and couldn’t recognize or admit they existed.
But people on both ends of the political spectrum have a long tradition of moralizing their positions and saying things like “how could you stand for xyz” when that may not be the reason you vote the way you do at all. Unfair all around. Still, I think we should be sensitive to the fact that misogyny is in fact an embarrassingly commonplace phenomenon. Much as how I feel about racial issues, I try to direct my ire about any unfair painting with broad strokes at those men who have terrible attitudes toward women. In both cases, while I may sometimes get unfairly labeled or targeted, the vast majority of unfair bias and injustice tends to go on one particular direction. (not toward me)
Just wait until you get to the end of Goodnight Moon. I won’t spoil it for you, but you’re going to love it.
Now we are talking about books right up my alley

same. And I have been off Facebook for 3 months so as not to corrode my soul with each side’s relentless hysterical (in the non-funny way) posts.
read it. Classic.
I have found that blocking shared political sources has made my FB feed a much happier place.
yes, but … what if they’re your relatives? Or out of town friends with sick parents or children and want to keep up? As for the others, I always feel bad blocking even the worst offenders but never regret it later.
Another Friday rumination: why are some of the nicest, most generous people some of the most egregious, unreasonable venom spewers on FB? Maybe that’s true on Twitter as well but I don’t personally know those people.
Don’t block people. Block sites/pages they share.
I’d love to read his Lyndon Johnson series but I am not sure I have the stamina. Supposed to be fantastic as well.
Trashy players and trashy fans. Fitting.
same. Find Caro’s big works physically dangerous in hardback. I’ve dozed off and had the edge of that bad boy brain me.
Good observation about nice people and venomous FB posts. My view is that most of these venomous posters would never talk like that to someone’s face whom they disagree with. I have trained myself to ignore these from family and friends, or simply unfollow them in the event they occur with frequency.
My son *still* isn’t sure what “mush” is, even after me reading it to him for going on five years.
The Oxford comma is my hero
The worst thing about him is his remorselessly dirty play; next is his idiot man-bun; next is his slack-jawed yokel countenance…
I could go on, but it would only make me angrier
I’m gonna let you in on a little secret…I actually wrote a spinoff of “Goodnight Moon” called “Goodnight Cavs” about last year’s title, proper cadence count and all. I took minor steps to look into getting it published (including reaching out to fellow WFNYer Dawn Griffin!), but never actually ran with it. Maybe if I had thought of it earlier, as it was a few months after the title that I actually came up with the idea, I would have tried harder, but I think my feeling was that by that time, the novelty of it would have been too far removed to actually sell. Who knows…
I do kind of wish I just gotten one semi-professionally made just to have for my son who was born 5 months after the title.
see, I don’t think they need any further test for GS – each other is all either team’s been thinking about since LeBon pounded “OMG!” on the Oracle floor. The Cavs have finally caught the scent of June in the wind and opened their engines. The goal now is to get past the conference finals as healthy and fresh as possible. No high ankles, no swollen knees or broken digits, no J.R. impulse control issues.
Haven’t read HE, but from your description I understand his point to be that people view presidential candidates through a prism of both race and class even though the former gets the lion’s share of explanatory power in our country. With George W and Clinton, they both intentionally cultivated a folksy persona that effectively concealed their class status as multi-millionaires/Ivy Leaguers. Obama, on the other hand, comports himself in a way that less effectively redirects attention from his class status; in many ways, his “heroic narrative” is reliant on the meritocratic notion of successfully advancing in class through conventional social structures (e.g. universities, politics) that are inaccessible to most “hillbillies”.
Great, now I’ll have to add the damn book to the queue…
