Just announce Myles Garrett now: While We’re Waiting

Happy Friday to the best website visitors in the world. Have you checked out our Patreon? You have? Cool. Let’s talk about the Browns.

Just take Myles Garrett in case he’s Kyrie Irving…

I don’t know if the Browns front office is a keeper yet. Nobody knows that yet, least of all Jimmy Haslam. We just don’t know if this structure with this group of people are capable of pushing all the chess pieces around the board to enable the team to develop into a collection of talent that can win football games. Just because we aren’t sure about them or their future doesn’t mean that they couldn’t end up having a good draft this year. Whether or not they’re here to see it through in the end, they could help set up the Browns for a bright future just the same.

I think about Chris Grant. I think about the fact that he was kind of a disaster. He treated the Cavaliers like a portfolio that needed to be managed and diversified. Instead of building a team that could win basketball games he collected assets. At the end of his reign in Cleveland he didn’t even collect assets very well. How else can you possibly look at a draft haul of Anthony Bennett, Sergey Karasev, Allen Crabbe, and Carrick Felix, who were all taken in the top 33 of players? Despite that waste of a draft, Chris Grant didn’t choke when it was time to select Kyrie Irving. Even though he could have done better, he also helped the team when he drafted Tristan Thompson.1

The bottom line is that even though Chris Grant proved to be unworthy of employment in Cleveland in the long run, when given an opportunity with one of the best prospects available first overall, he made the right choice. We could certainly talk more about the Anthony Bennett selection or the Dion Waiters selection, but it’s not like there was a Kyrie Irving sitting there in either of those circumstances in terms of obviousness. The hindsight pick is Giannis Antetokounmpo who was taken at 15, but that’s not really fair to say that he should have gone first overall.

From everything we can tell right now with the NFL draft and the Browns is that Myles Garrett is a Kyrie Irving type of obvious pick. We hope he’s an NFL defense equivalent of LeBron James, but that’s asking a hell of a lot. The real point is that even if this Browns front office is doomed to unemployment after a stint in Cleveland and a bunch of bad picks, they could get this one right.

I know it’s a quarterback league and I know that your team is lost until it has a quarterback. Regardless of that, and regardless of what Adam Schefter is saying about the Browns being “split” on Garrett and Trubisky, it would be insane to draft one of the quarterbacks that most are on record saying need a redshirt year at least before they are ready. Just because you need a quarterback, there’s a level of job security to not picking one high until you’re absolutely sure. Brady Quinn, Brandon Weeden and Johnny Manziel can’t save anyone’s job or give them additional time. Myles Garrett and punting the QB decision on down the road very well could.

I have no idea if I’m just being sold on Myles Garrett. I have no idea if any of the top three quarterbacks in this draft would be regime-saving. I’m just guessing on many fronts. What I am sure of is that nobody will blame the Browns for just taking Garrett and having him end up as some approximation of Kyrie Irving level of quality. At this point in the team’s history, nobody would be upset if the Browns achieved Tristan Thompson at 12 either.

I’m sure there’s much to be gained from playing the rumor mill, but when the time comes and the Browns are on the clock, I’m hoping they just pick Myles Garrett.

Cavaliers playoff schedule begins…

I joke that I almost wish the Cavaliers got bounced because of the scheduling pressure that it creates. But seriously though, it’s kind of intense. This is just the first round and obviously, you figure the Cavs will go at least a little far…

  • Sat 15th 3:00 CLE
  • Mon 17 7:00 CLE
  • Thu 20 7:00 IND
  • Sun 23 1:00 IND
  • Tue 25 TBD CLE
  • Thu 27 TBD IND
  • Sat 29 TBD CLE

I know it’s insane to complain as a fan, but it’s an intense schedule.

Anyway, here’s hoping it’s a smooth first round and a nice Easter weekend! Thanks for being here with us.

    1. Sure, Klay Thompson and Kawhi Leonard were selected 11, and 15, to Thompson’s 4, but that’s some greedy hindsight. []

      Just face it.
The HBT is going to use every possible second, up to and including the instant that Goodell actually utters the words “With the first pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select defensive lineman from Texas A&M, Myles Garret” to try to secure more assets. It’s in their nature.
      Traders gonna trade.

    • jpftribe

If the NFL hadn’t stretched silly season to eek every hype dime they can, they would have announced his name yesterday.

    • Garry_Owen

Myles Garrett is a no-brainer. The good thing about a no-brainer is that no brain is required. You can shut if off. The bad thing with this FO is that they are entirely brains. Tough to ask a brain to stop being a brain. I wish Jimmah could just put Sashi and Co. on forced vacation until right after the 1st pick is done.

    • Garry_Owen

I hope the last phrase is true.

    • tigersbrowns2

hi GARRY … good post. i think they’ll do okay though.

    • tigersbrowns2

there is no way the Browns are “torn” about the #1 pick … it appears the Browns are trying to move up from #33 & have 3 first round picks. this will be the pick used on Trubisky or another QB.

    • RGB

Our FO is infected with the rare combination of Smartest Guy In The Room Syndrome and Traders Gonna Trade Disorder.

    • tigersbrowns2

hi RGB … you may be right … i think they are going to nail it this year … if they stay at #1 & take Garrett , the draft will already be considered a success.

with all the picks they’re sitting on , i think we trade up , if anything … not down.

    • RGB

And we may very well trade out of the #1 for ten 4th-rounders and pick ten stiffs that PFF gave high grades to.
      #TeamSnark never sleeps.

    • jpftribe

If they don’t take Myles, then they are extraordinarily naive regarding NFL FO job security.

    • Garry_Owen

True. But they are an iconoclastic FO. They don’t fit the mold that they might unwittingly (or wittingly) break.

    • Garry_Owen

To their advantage, however, they might actually be the smartest guys in the room. The syndrome generally only infects those that aren’t actually the smartest guys. Presumably, the actual smartest guys in the room acknowledge that There Is Only Myles.

    • Garry_Owen

I saw this, too (with the idea that they would move their 12 up higher). I don’t mind the idea in theory, but hate it if (whoever their desired QB is) is drafted #2 and they’ve spent big (to include the #33, for sure) to just move up 9 spots to get the rough equivalent of what they could have gotten without the trade. If they do something like this, it better be after the #2 pick is in and announced.

    • tigersbrowns2

would you be okay if they ended-up doing this ?

      #1 – Garrett
      #12 – Hooker
      #21 – Trubisky

    • RGB

      Smartest at what, though?
      Making deals? I’ll concede that.
      Evaluating talent? Wellll…

    • jpftribe

Which is exactly why I don’t pay any attention to what any of the pundits have to say. No one has leaked or scooped a major move they have made, and they made a point to purge talkers. All the nonsense this week is just that.

    • Garry_Owen

Well, I think so. Caveats, however: (1) In order to get back into the 1st round, I think they have to trade either the 1 or the 12; they won’t be able to keep both; (2) If they want Trubisky (or another QB), which is the only reason they do a trade at all, and he’s there at 12, they’re taking him at 12; (3) I just don’t see them moving back into the 1st round to try to get a QB in the 20s, because they won’t know if they need to until mid first round, and they won’t have the ammo to get back in (short of trading Joe Thomas, which I’m obviously in favor of them doing).

    • Garry_Owen

So I’ve got you in camp with Tony Grossi and MKC, just wanting some “football people” making the calls.

I just think they’re “smartest,” as in “smartest.” Generally. Overall. Bright dudes.

    • Garry_Owen

      But ain’t it fun??!!!!

    • tigersbrowns2

i was thinking of trading our 2018 draft picks … we have a 1st & three 2nd rounders.

so , they could trade two 2nd rounders from next year to move up … or even trade their 1st rounder next year … so , if they would trade their 2018 1st round pick to net Garrett , Hooker & Trubisky in this draft , is it worth it ?

and there are other teams in the late teens & 20’s that could take a QB.

    • RGB

      no, No, NO.
I’m nothing like those two clowns.
I’d just like some assurance that there are a few actual football people (ie. Hue and his staff.) involved in the talent evaluation process. Not just Sashi and his PFF subscription.
And since when did “football people” become a pejorative?

    • Pat

They have PLENTY of draft capital over the next two seasons to make a trade back into the first round, are you kidding me? They have 20 picks aside from #1 and #12. They could trade back into the first and offer several 2nd round picks. Also, no way do they trade Joe Thomas. They just spent big money upgrading their offensive line, why in the world would they trade their best player?

    • The_Matt_of_Akron

If they get Garrett at #1 and Hooker at #12, they could punt the rest of the draft and I’d be ok with it.

    • Garry_Owen

I suppose. I just think it’s a huge risk for a bad team (Browns) to trade what is likely to still be a very high first round pick in 2018 just to get back into the 20s in this draft. I don’t see that as being good moneyball.

    • Pat

You do realize they still have more holes to be filled than pass rusher and DB, right?
RT, RB, WR, TE, QB, DT, CB, FS, SS, LB

All of those positions need upgraded or need better quality depth.

    • RGB

It’s certainly been more fun than our actual drafts in recent years.

    • Garry_Owen

Because they want to win a Super Bowl at some point, and they’ll never do it while he’s on the roster.

Future draft capital is not the same as present draft capital to do what they would be trying to do in this scenario.

    • Garry_Owen

Sorry. In my mind, you’re sipping appletinis with Grossi and Cabot on weekends. It’s set in mental stone.

    • tigersbrowns2

if Trubisky is truly their guy … then go for it.

    • JM85

      There is only Myles.

    • Garry_Owen

Sure, but again, if he is, they’re taking him at 12. If they think he won’t be there at 12 . . . well, I shudder to think of the possibilities, because it means no Myles.

    • JM85

Mitchell Trubisky will always be Mitch to me.

    • Garry_Owen

I love how as we get older, “recent’ can mean, like, 25 years.

To answer your question re “football people” as a pejorative: (a) I have no idea what a “football person” is. I’ve watched football. I’ve played football. I know some people. I’ve never seen a “football person.” Football is not so complicated that it takes some special type of person to understand or run it. (b) When used by people like Grossi and Cabot, it’s just a throw-away term used to describe a situation they’re too lazy to understand. (c) As I understand the term as used by Grossi, Cabot, et al., it seems to describe the very type of people that HAVE BEEN RUNNING THE BROWNS INTO THE GROUND FOR THE LAST EON.

And yet, here the Browns are.

      Yep. I just used it.

    • Garry_Owen

You went nuclear. Draft hasn’t even happened yet, and you went nuclear. Can’t believe you already went nuclear.

    • RGB

Jules has a quote for this, but the mods would not approve…

    • tigersbrowns2

      good post …

    • tigersbrowns2

      short , sweet & to-the-point …

    • jpftribe

Um, the Grossi / Cabot card definitely deserves an atomic response.

    • Garry_Owen

Sure it was provocation, but it deserved a proportional response. Not THE gif.

    • The_Matt_of_Akron

Malik Hooker should fill your FS spot. So move that up a sentence, and put DB in your long list.
