Astros defeat Indians in Showdown of AL’s Best: Podcast Game Recap

At WFNY we are given the opportunity to innovate to try new things. With this in mind, we are trying a gamer podcast where Jim Pete, Mike Hattery and others record a short podcast with instant reactions to the game and thematic discussion. Feel free to ask questions, provide feedback, and tell us how it can be improved.

On a beautiful evening in Cleveland, Dallas Keuchel mowed down the Indians over 9 innings leading the Astros to a 4-2 win.  Keuchel relied on his heavy sinker and command on the corners to induce three double plays and escaped bad outcomes when he allowed hard contact.  In terms of the longer-term implications of the evening’s affair, the Astros already banged up early in the season saw a scary collision involving Jose Altuve and Teoscar Hernandez. The injury to Hernandez looked to be a serious knee injury and Altuve left having been clotheslined and at risk of a concussion. For the rest of the details and analysis of Tuesday night’s game, listen below.

Nice recap. Enjoyed it after the game.

Was at the game tonight. 3 games so far this year, three losses. Tomlin, Bauer, Tomlin.

I noticed last year Francona put guys in situations all year long to see how they would respond, and over the long haul that has a lot of merit, especially when it comes to crunch time.

But it’s really frustrating to see them play a game ignoring the opposing pitching. That should have been played as a one run game. Yeah Tomlin pitched alright, and only gave up 3 over 7. But 3 was too much and it wasn’t hard to figure out by the time Tomlin got in trouble. Bring in one of the lefties third time thru the top of the order and it’s a different game. Sure there were a lot of reasons they lost, and blah, blah, blah, but the game was over after those 3 runs and there were higher odds calls to make to stop them.

And if I sound a little bitter, I am. I saw Tomlin get rocked for 7, Bauer sent back out after 105 pitches to give up 2 more runs, which turned out to be the difference despite a 9th inning grand slam, and tonight.

If Tomlin games are just optional wins, grind up inning games, than I’ll just trade in my tickets for all the Tomlin starts.

Only three things from yesterday concerned me (rest were expected)

    Frankie’s defense was brutal.
Andrew has been pitching to contact A LOT. Yesterday it crossed a line in my mind from anecdotal to habitual.
Edwin softly lines out to left field and I’d like someone to pull his hard-contact numbers. (We should have signed the man-in-white with him apparently).

I feel your pain on the losses, we’ve been to two so far and one of them was that Bauer loss.

It sure would be nice if there was a RHB in the org that didn’t try to yank every sinker over the LF wall that we could use against these crafty LHP types weve struggled with so far this season.

The shifts last night were incredible. The right side of the field was barren wasteland on a number of occasions.
