Final thoughts before the draft: While We’re Waiting
April 25, 2017Tribe, Tunes and Transport- One Fan’s Memories: 1977
April 25, 2017Two days. The 2017 NFL Draft is just two days away! The Browns will be active with a total of 11 picks, including two picks in each of the first two rounds. The team has a whole lot of holes on the roster, but the upcoming draft gives the Browns a great opportunity to address many of these areas. If last year was any indication, the Browns will be active in trades, so predicting what the team will do is incredibly hard to do. But nevertheless, I will take a stab at predicting some of the moves Cleveland will make over the three day event. So, with that, let’s take a look at my 10 bold Browns predictions for the 2017 NFL Draft!
Joe Gilbert’s 2017 NFL Draft Evaluations: Safeties, Cornerbacks, Inside Linebackers, Edge Rushers, Interior Defensive Linemen, Interior Offensive Linemen, Offensive Tackles, Tight Ends, Wide Receivers, Running Backs, Quarterbacks, Big Board
1. The Browns will draft edge rusher Myles Garrett with the No. 1 overall pick. The Browns get the best player in the draft at a position of great need for the team. It is an obvious non-bold prediction, but it needs to be repeated as the Browns will make the right move by selecting the Texas A&M star.
2. The Browns will select a quarterback in the first round; either Mitchell Trubisky or Patrick Mahomes. The selection of the quarterback may not be at No. 12. The team could look to move up to grab their man or the team to could move down, where they would feel more comfortable taking their signal caller, along with gaining more picks. The Browns might even trade up from their No. 33 spot.
3. The Browns will use the 2017 NFL Draft to address their defense. The Browns will use 75% of their picks on the defensive side of the ball. So, around eight of their picks will be defenders if they make all 11 picks. Whether its interior defensive linemen, edge rushers, linebackers or secondary players, the Browns will look to upgrade their poor defense.
4. The Browns will pick cornerbacks similar to how they picked receivers in last year’s draft. The position will be selected multiple times throughout the draft. The team will come out of the event with at least three new cornerbacks to add to their depth chart.
5. The Browns will not be picking from either of their current spots in the second round; No. 33 and No. 52. The team will make trades to move around the draft to target guys they like. The Browns two second-round picks are key trade pieces. The team may also look to trade back from those spots to gain more picks.
6. The Browns will trade a veteran during the three-day event. Whether its Brock Osweiler or Joe Haden or someone else (not Joe Thomas), the Browns will trade a veteran for picks this season and next. The trade will come out of the blue and will shock some fans.
7. With one of their first four selections, the Browns will add a safety. The leading candidates will be Budda Baker, Jabrill Peppers, or Obi Melifonwu. The Browns will not take either Jamal Adams or Malik Hooker because both players will be gone before the Browns pick at No. 12 in the first round.
8. The Browns will not select one offensive linemen in the entire draft. The Browns addressed the offensive line heavily during the free agency period this offseason, adding Kevin Zeitler and J.C. Tretter. The team really does not have a huge hole on the line anymore after their free agency pickups. The team is comfortable at right tackle with Shon Coleman, who they selected in the third round last season.
9. With their first four picks of the 2017 NFL Draft, the Browns will draft an edge rusher (Myles Garrett), a quarterback (Patrick Mahomes or Mitchell Trubisky), a safety (Budda Baker, Jabrill Peppers or Obi Melifonwu), and a cornerback (Marlon Humphrey, Gareon Conley, Tre’Davious White or Teez Tabor). The Browns will select those positions in no certain order.
10. The Browns will make four trades during the 2017 NFL Draft. One of them will be in the first round, while another one will be in the second round. The Browns could trade up or back or even out of the round in the trade. All options are open depending on the value the trade will present to the team.

I would be completely content with that draft.
Lot’s a defense in this draft…good defense. Well, DL and DBs. Not so much LBs.
I’m totally on board with loading up on DBs after drafting MYLES.
would be so, so hard to pass up on Reddick if he somehow lasts to 33, but I’m with you.
I wonder how far Brantley will fall.
He would be a super steal.
if the truth is closer to his version than the alleged version of events, then he sure could be.
Grab him the 3rd round (#65) if he’s there?
Or wait.
The Browns get Garrett, a QB and trade Haden? I’m on board with that.
Hope that the Browns investigative team is top-notch and has the real story of what happened. Reportedly, there is video.
YES! Only thing is I would include that 65th pick with these predictions. Odds are it will be a very solid piece. Possible top 50 player.
1,2 and 3 are looking pretty safe. Also probably best for the team.
#4 is also great considering how deep this draft is at CB. If we got one in round 2, another two in round 5, it would be very beneficial to us. I also love not taking an OL (#8) this year. Was very happy they addressed it in FA instead, as it was much deeper there AND we got the best G and best C. Still hard to believe that all happened.
Piggybacking on 5, how about trading some 2018 picks to move around? This draft is stacked and it’s time to capitalize. Would love to use the 2018 ammo to move up more this year.
6 is interesting. I really like Joe but wondering what they would get for him. Trading Brock for a round 3 or 4 pick would be awesome
#7 is great.. Budda Baker at 33 or M.Williams at 52/65
#9 is the best one. Garrett and CB, S, QB in no particular order, will be the 4/5 first taken. I only say it like that because I wouldn’t rule out OJ Howard at 12 and taking a S at 65 like Maye or Marcus Williams.
10 is wild. But I like it.

Peppers had a little problem with his drug test. He’ll bust anyway. Trade the 33rd pick to the fool that gives up the most. After sitting all night, the offers should come flying and the browns could do just as good a few picks later like Budda.

I think Chidobe Awuzie deserves more love as a possible safety for the browns at 33 (played safety and CB in college but projects as a stronger FS who can play matchup corner as well)
Also trading Haden while he still has value is good. Even when healthy he isnt the same player.
I look for the Browns to NOT add a QB this season (maybe that’s my bias – I could see a late-rounder).
I also look for them to bundle some mix of vets and picks for 2018 high-rounders (depending on the vet, maybe 1st) next year. They will hedge on 2017 and hope that they have enough to trade up and get Sam Darnold.
Look for them to grab Myles at 1, then trade down to 19 and take a DB. Maybe Peppers, Baker, or one of the CBs.
It’s imperative that whoever is thinking about this draft remembers that this isn’t being done in a vacuum but with 2018, 2019, and beyond in mind.
Love the trade down from 12. It was reported yesterday that they’ve contacted teams that are looking to move up. If we can add a 2nd round pick for dropping 6-10 spots? that would be awesome.
