NFL Draft: NFL.com has Browns taking a QB and ILB in Round 1
January 25, 2017It just won’t stop: Cavs vs Kings Behind the Box Score
January 25, 2017The NFL Draft is three months away, but draft talk is heating up, especially for the Cleveland Browns and their fans. With the Senior Bowl taking place this week, Clemson quarterback and national champion Deshaun Watson decided to sit out. While he may not be in Mobile, Alabama, his head coach, Dabo Swinney is, and he had some interesting things to say about the Browns and his quarterback.
Here’s what he said, according to NBC Sports’ Michael David Smith:
“He’s humble, the same guy every day, and always ready. He comes to every meeting prepared. That’s how you change things, you change the culture, through — for me it’s through discipline and recruiting, staffing and all that stuff. For them, it’s decision-making, it’s who you pick. And I’m just telling you: They pass on Deshaun Watson, they’re passing on Michael Jordan. I mean, I don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, I’m just an old funky college coach, but Deshaun Watson is the best, by a long shot.”
While comparing Watson to Jordan — besides the fact that they play two different sports — is far-fetched, Swinney knows Watson better than anyone else. Now, is he pumping up his quarterback in hopes that he will get drafted higher, or does he truly mean that Watson can be that guy?
The Browns have been in search of a franchise quarterback since their return in 1999. While Watson could possibly be that franchise-changing-type QB, many believe that it’s too big a of a risk to take him at No. 1, especially because it would mean that they would pass on Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett. Many believe Garrett is a once-in-a-generation-type pick, and it will would be hard for Cleveland to skip out on such a playmaker, no matter where he plays on the field. For what it’s worth, both CBS and Bleacher Report currently have the Browns taking Garrett with the first-overall pick.

Now, what if Watson is still available at No. 12 or No. 33? That’s where the Browns’ front office will seriously have to think about nabbing a player that could potentially be their franchise quarterback. He showed what he could do on college football’s biggest stage while beating Alabama to win the national championship, but could that translate to the NFL? Watson has the arm and the legs, but is he consistent enough? Keep in mind, in some major statistical categories, Watson regressed as a during his final college season as a junior. His 67.0 completion percentage and 151.1 passer rating were the lowest of his college career, while he tied for the second-most interceptions (17) in FBS. Luckily, the Browns have scouts to answer those sorts of questions prior to the start of the draft.
As WFNY’s Joe Gilbert pointed out, the Browns do not have a quarterback on their current roster to lead their team into the future. Now, is that quarterback in the upcoming draft, or should the Browns focus on upgrading at other positions and either get their franchise quarterback in free agency, acquire him in a trade, or wait for a future draft?

So in this analogy… we draft Olajuwon? Deal.
Or, we trade out of the #1 and take Sam Bowie, Earl Jones, and Othell Wilson.
He must have been comparing both of their football skills!
Every time I watch the Cavs play, I thank the basektball gods we didn’t draft Darko (or anyone else for that matter, but especially Darko).
I also thank the basketball gods that the Pistons didn’t end up with Anthony, Wade, or Bosh to fill out that pretty darn good roster.
Yes! I was just about to say, “Well, Jordan wasn’t much of a baseball player; I doubt he was much of a football player.”
If he had said “Joe Montana” . . . .
Also:
“That’s how you change things, you change the culture, through — for me it’s through discipline and recruiting, staffing and all that stuff.”
For me, when we’re talking about drafting a QB, it’s through All-Pro ability to read defenses, thread needles, hit middle and long range throws quickly, lead effectively in and out of the huddle, and not throw interceptions.
Maybe Watson can do those things. Maybe not.
We already have Lebron, we don’t need MJ
what do you expect Swinney to say about Watson ??
i saw a few mocks today … one had us taking Watson #1 …. another had us taking Trubisy at #12 … another had us taking Kizer at #12 … and yet another had us taking Kaaya at #52.
nobody knows but Hue & the HBT … and they certainly won’t be tipping their hand one way or the other.
Dabo, may we interest you in some . . .
