Greg Allen and the shadows of Kenny Lofton
December 8, 2016Hue Jackson hasn’t given up on RG3 as his franchise QB—yet
December 9, 2016Happy Friday everyone. Before I eviscerate the Browns, let me remind you what we’re trying to do at Patreon. This week we’re giving away some Terry Pluto books to a few lucky patrons, but we need more help. We’ll try to make it worth your while, but we’re trying to hire our first employee – an editor – to help us out. We want to provide more and better content and we have some really interesting people who might be possibilities to help, but we can’t fund this on advertising revenues alone. If you’re able to help us out, click on over to the Patreon page. Every little bit helps. If each one of our average daily visitors1 contributed just $0.50 per month, we’d crush our goal. Help us crush our goal! Speaking of which, let’s crush the Browns.
The Cleveland Browns training camp news says it all…
If you thought the Cleveland Browns were somehow turning over a new leaf or otherwise getting smarter since their latest round of changes to the front office, they might have proved otherwise this week. On a Thursday of a week where the Browns were 0-12 and trying to stave off 0-13 coming off a bye week against the Bengals, rumors of the team moving training camp to Columbus resurfaced from the ashes of Alec Scheiner’s business-focused reign in Cleveland.
The most tone-deaf professional sports organization in Cleveland – and maybe on the planet – allowed it to appear like they’re wheeling and dealing on the business2 existence while they continue to fail at the single, fundamental purpose they’re in existence to do. For the Browns, it shouldn’t be about where they practice ahead of a future season as much as it should be about trying to maintain a few fans who will be willing to watch that future season. It shouldn’t be about bolstering the team’s presence in the state of Ohio by gaining a central proximity to an NFL battleground market like Columbus. It should be about bolstering the team’s presence in the state of Ohio by trying to beat the Cincinnati Bengals. The injured and disappointing Bengals should offer the Browns an opportunity, except that they’re coming off a plastering of the Eagles despite their headwinds.
No matter, Browns fans! We’re too busy plotting ways to invest $5 million in not-Cleveland so we can make you drive two hours if you want to watch the Browns in training camp. Dan Gilbert has a casino in proximity to his arena. Jimmy Haslam wants to make sure Browns fans have to hit up his roadside gas-pump rip centers a few more times per year!
Our old friend Tom Reed contributed to the report in the Columbus dispatch.
A Browns spokesman confirmed that the team is talking to the city about moving its training camp to central Ohio from the Cleveland suburb of Berea.
“As we have consistently conveyed, based on our football operation’s desires for training camp, we are considering various locations,” spokesman Peter John-Baptiste said in a statement. “Representatives have approached us about looking into different options, and currently, we are exploring an opportunity in Columbus.”
When the Browns say “we are considering various locations,” who exactly is the one doing the considering? Is it Sashi Brown? Is it Jimmy or Dee Haslam? Whoever it is, it’s not the right time. It’s exactly the wrong time to be doing anything other than football-related things or keeping your head down as your organization puts up one of the most embarrassing seasons in the history of the NFL.
I recognize that putting off Columbus business meetings over training camp wouldn’t positively impact their ability to play football right now, but this is a world where perception is reality. When a company is having issues and laying off employees, you don’t put out a press release about the CEO’s stock options or fat bonus. Even if he or she is due that bonus, you might consider pushing it on down the road a bit. When you’re Chipotle and there is an E Coli outbreak you don’t start bragging about how many new stores you’re going to open next year. You do whatever you can to fix the issues, and even if you’re not someone at the company who can do anything to help, you make it appear you’re in lock-step with those who can by keeping your mouth shut.
The Browns fail to do this on all levels, time and again. Since the Browns came back they’ve hired and fired dozens, raised ticket prices, and now for a second time have been seen flirting with moving training camp away from the most loyal fans the team has left in an effort to bring new fans into watching their awful team.
On the bright side, maybe this means they’re going to overpay to keep Terrelle Pryor. He was a Buckeye, right? Wait, do Buckeyes fans still hate him? Oh, never mind. I can’t figure any of this out. I’m so confused now I feel like I work for the Browns…

The Arsonist after reading Maynard James Keenan’s book…
I finished Maynard’s book this week and it’s got me back listening to everything Maynard’s ever done musically. All due respect to Tool and A Perfect Circle where Maynard has done some of his very best work, The Arsonist by Puscifer belongs in any conversation about the best stuff he’s ever been involved with musically. Here’s a weird live performance that includes the band in luchador masks and female wrestlers performing behind the band, because, you know, why not?

Not even close to what I said. I was simply pointing out that there are better ways to use tax money than the Browns. And some of that tax money will come from the State, involving all Ohioans.
That’s certainly not how I read that comment. But please, do tell this (suburban) Clevelander where your comment is headed?
