Ohio State Opens up at No. 6 in First College Football Playoff Poll
November 2, 2016What does it all mean?
November 2, 2016Behind the scenes, WFNY has many discussions on the internal Slack channels. There are discussions on schedule, brainstorming future features, help finding resources, but there is also a fair amount of pulling up the digital barstool and talking sports.
With Game 7 coming up later today, we thought you might like a peek at one of those internal discussions (lightly edited). Enjoy.
joshpoloha 11:49 AM Kluber won the All Star Game, which is why the Indians got home field / Game 7 is at The Jake. So, it’s only right that we win it at home tonight, right? Cubs already have said that Lester will pitch tonight if needed (heard on 92.3 on way to work), has Tito said anything about any starters possibly being used if Kluber struggles?
pat 12:00 PM Yeah the Indians only have three starters and Tomlin shouldn’t be pitched today even if he says he feels fine, you can’t trust that. I wouldn’t choose Bauer over Allen, Miller, Shaw, Otero, Manship, or Salazar. I think the only situation where I’d be interested in possibly seeing him pitch would be if the game goes to several extra innings
joshpoloha 12:01 PM True. Salazar isn’t considered a starter this postseason and the only other two are Bauer and Tomlin.
pat 12:01 PM No worries. I’m already a nervous wreck. This is going to be a long day.
mgbode 12:07 PM I wouldn’t mind Bauer for an inning but cannot fathom a situation where we need to do it either
jsteiner03 12:08 Kluber – Miller – Shaw – Allen -> Salazar if trouble
If it’s 9 innings you have to be hoping
Kluber – 4
Miller – 3
Shaw/Allen 2 (with Shaw optional)
mgbode 12:10 PM If it’s 9 innings, I’m hoping that Kluber throws a goddamn Maddux
I mean, as long as we are hoping, right
joshpoloha 12:12 PM In that perfect scenario, does Shaw get brought in to start the eighth and if he gets in any sort of trouble you bring in Cody or just put Allen in to start the eighth and use him like the Cubs used the wife beater in Game 5?
mgbode 12:12 PM you pitch Shaw against the bottom 3 of the lineup and don’t care what inning it is
joshpoloha 12:13 PM I like that
jsteiner03 12:15 PM Re complete game: I know you’re kidding, but if he’s perfect through 4 I may still pull him. Kluber’s only job is to get us to a point where we can see the end of the game with our best pitchers.
mgbode 12:15 PM I’m not kidding
If he’s under 100 pitches and fooling the Cubs, you don’t pull him
andrew 12:16 PM The balls it would take to pull him after 4 with a perfect game going, though
mgbode 12:16 PM Now, I have a quick hook if he gets in trouble after the 4th…but give him time
jsteiner03 12:16 PM Even if he weren’t on double short rest, he’s not as good as Miller, and having him pitch three times thru the order with your best pitcher in the bullpen is asking for trouble.
mgbode 12:16 PM Kluber is amazing the 3rd time through
he’s not your normal pitcher – I understand that double-short-rest means it is not likely his season stats hold up though
jsteiner03 12:17 PM If it’s a one-run game you don’t get to wait for trouble.
mgbode 12:17 PM again, I have the hook in hand
too many factors here – I’d have some nuance
is his stuff looking Game 1 nasty?
is he locating?
is Scott pissed off about how much his phone is blowing up from these Slack notifications?
andrew 12:18 PM I’d be so tempted to bring in Miller as soon as I got a 1 run lead, even if its the first inning. I mean, not really. But kind of.
joshpoloha 12:18 PM Whoever is pitching, the perfect scenario is that Schwarber strikes out to end the game because that’ll leave Joe Buck speechless and will allow us to hear the crowd
mgbode 12:18 PM no, perfect scenario is Schwarber is thrown at on a caught stealing to end the game (happened to Babe Ruth)
andrew 12:19 PM So, I’m curious how much starting on short rest twice in week affects a pitcher. Is there much data on this?
mgbode 12:19 PM any data would be meaningless
andrew 12:19 PM Like, I know nobody has won 1,4,7 since Gibson, but have many people even tried?
mgbode 12:19 PM it just doesn’t happen post 70s
andrew 12:19 PM Are there pitchers who won games 1 and 4 and lost 7?
mgbode 12:19 PM there are pitchers who have lost all 3
Schilling (D-Backs) pitched 3 games and went 2-1 I think
andrew 12:20 PM So we really don’t know, right? Kluber could be perfectly fine tonight
mgbode 12:20 PM yep
the advancement in pitching training over the last 7-10 years also renders much of previous data moot. not that it means better or worse for Kluber — it is fine tuning, so it could be bad just as easily.
jsteiner03 12:21 PM I expect him to be fine. The only data that we have on short rest is that it impedes endurance more than stuff. All we need are 60-70 good Kluber pitches.
andrew 12:22 PM I’d assume short rest probably affects everyone differently, too, making it even harder to predict.
joshpoloha 12:22 PM He had 88 pitches in Game 1. How many in Game 4?
andrew 12:22 PM So yeah, just give us 4-5 innings, Kluber, and let the bullpen take it from there. 81 in Game 4
mgbode 12:23 PM Bumgarner threw 5 innings in 2014 Game 7 – on 2 DAYS REST
andrew 12:24 PM Bumgarner is not human
mgbode 12:24 PM is Kluber?
joshpoloha 12:24 PM No
scott 12:24 PM Maybe if he knows he’s only gonna be needed for six innings he’ll throw like 60 perfect pitches rather than 50 really good ones and 30ish not-so good ones. That’s how it works right?
mgbode 12:24 PM exactly how it works
I want him to test how bad of a pitch Baez will swing at with 2 strikes
like, throw one into the Cubs dugout and see if he can check
andrew 12:25 PM Watching Bode and Steiner talk baseball in Slack is pretty fun, though.
mgbode 12:25 PM All the popcorn to Steiner there. Welcome to come back anytime you want Jon.
jsteiner03 12:26 PM My phone is buzzing a lot!

“No worries. I’m already a nervous wreck. This is going to be a long day.”
sort of sums it all up right there
If anyone needs me, I’ll be puking in my lucky corner.
As game time creeps closer I’m actually dreading this. Bullpen moves in the 3rd? Seeing that commercial with the llama (or whatever that is) 87 times by the 5th? Wondering what Schwarber will look like at age 55 given that his at baby face is already growing a double chin and he only wears elastic waist bands?
I favor a blow out, preferably with us in double digits. Early camera cuts between ecstatic jumping fans in the plaza and Bill Murray rueful smile face. Buck intoning: “This does not diminish Chicago’s epic season, and they will certainly be back.” Or, eff it, we continue yesterday’s Big Melt and lose by a dozen. But a one-run game with Cody Allen going 2-0 on every batter and pouring sweat in a high-def close up? I might contract narcolepsy, fade to black and wake up at 3:00 a.m. Hate this. Thanks, Naquin.
I don’t know if I can bear to watch tonight, yet I obviously have to. This isn’t the most talented team we’ve had in my lifetime – the ’90s teams and even the ’07 team probably had more talent. But this is the best-managed team with the best pitching staff of my lifetime, a team constructed of players who seem to genuinely like each other. I hate to see this thing end.
All the days spent complaining about the Dolans, about losing Sabathia and Lee, about Pat Listach and Mo Vaughn winning awards over our guys; obsessing over Adam Miller’s finger and Matt LaPorta’s potential; being haunted by the ghosts of Pedro Martinez, the ’07 collapse, by Edgar Renteria and Craig Counsell and Jose Ramon Nova Mesa… it all leads to tonight. That is terrifying.
hi gang … i know you all are a bit nervous about tonight. but look at it this way , if someone in the beginning of the season gave you the opportunity to be in game 7 of the WS with Kluber on the mound … you’d take that in a heartbeat.
good luck & enjoy the game.
Btw, on busy East 4th Street right now the ratio of Indians jerseys to Cubs gear is only about 2 to1. Have to wonder if the locals have given in and ransomed the home field advantage away.
“jsteiner03 12:17 PM If it’s a one-run game you don’t get to wait for trouble.”
Forever and ever, amen.
Bode, I love you man, but “fooling the Cubs [previously]” is not evidence that he will continue to fool them. You can’t wait for some rumblings before you make a switch, you have to be out in front of every move tonight.
Tonight’s line up just posted. I’m good with this:
1. DH Carlos Santana
2. 2B Jason Kipnis
3. SS Francisco Lindor
4. 1B Mike Napoli
5. 3B Jose Ramirez
6. RF Lonnie Chisenhall
7. CF Rajai Davis
8. LF Coco Crisp
9. C Roberto Perez
I know and understand y’alls side of it too. Just if he’s got his G1 stuff though, then I wouldn’t pull him earlier than I need to. If not, then I’m hoping he gets through twice and in comes the bullpen.
I just want to hear Tom Hamilton say that one glorious word “Ballgame!”
My fav word when we are up is GONE
