Buckeyes make it look easy, blow out Nebraska, 62-3
November 6, 2016Any Given Doomsday: While We’re Waiting
November 7, 2016A whole different league. That was what the Dallas Cowboys looked liked to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. The Cowboys embarrassed the Browns, beating them 35-10 at FirstEnergy Stadium, outgaining Cleveland by 201 total yardsβ423 yards to just 222. In the loss, the Browns were led through the air by quarterback Cody Kessler, who threw for just 203 yards and a touchdown. His leading target was running back Isaiah Crowell, who caught four passes for 63 yards. On the ground, Duke Johnson rushed for 30 yards on five carries to lead the teamβs poor running attack.
The offense, however, was not the big problem on Sunday.
Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott and (surprise!) tight end Jason Witten put on a show for Dallas. Prescott completed 21 of 27 passes for 247 yards and three touchdowns. Elliott rushed 18 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Witten caught eight passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. Before the fourth quarter and when the game was already decided, the Browns defense only held the Cowboys to one punt, allowing touchdowns in five of their seven drives before the fourth quarter (the other drive without a touchdown was the kneel down at the end of the second half).
Missed tackles and horrible communication were once again the key culprits for the bad defense, a unit punished by a lack of talent overall. It was just a dreadful day for the Browns defense and the Browns team overall.

The first quarter saw some good and some not so good things from the Browns. On the opening drive, Cleveland drove down the field, but was held to a field goal after stalling in the red zone. On the ensuing drive, Dallas spliced through the Browns defense, both through the air and on the ground. The drive was capped off by a 26-yard touchdown reception by tight end Jason Witten, who was left wide open because of miscommunication from newly acquired linebacker Jamie Collins. The quarter ended with both teams trading punts and the score being 7-3.
The Browns defense struggled mightily in second quarter allowing the Cowboys to drive for two touchdowns. The first Dallas touchdown drive went 69 yards on nine plays, while the second drive of the quarter went 67 yards on nine plays, capped off by another miscommunication in the Browns secondary allowing an easy touchdown. The Browns salvaged the quarter by putting together an impressive drive at the end of the half, going 80 yards in seven plays and 1:27. The Browns ended the half trailing 21-10.
The third quarter just got worse for Cleveland as the Browns were outscored 14-0, unable to stop the duo of Prescott and Elliott. It saw some horrible tackling and a lot more βZekeβ chants from a FirstEnergy Stadium crowd that looked as Blue and White as Progressive Field on the prior Thursday night.
The fourth quarter was just a slow march to the inevitable loss as neither team scored a point. The game was over far before this quarter, so not much mattered in the final one.
The Browns, sliding to 0-9 on the year, will look once again for their first win of the season this Thursday against the Baltimore Ravens who toppled the Pittsburgh Steelers on this same Sunday.

Holy shβ¦ The honeymoon is definitely over. The youth and talent account for some of the problems on D but this is historically bad. Sorry, someone has to be responsible for this and Horton is the point man. Back to back neutral zone infractions on 3rd & long?! I donβt know what the solution is but I donβt see how changing DCβs could conceivably make us worse.
I sincerely hope Hue decides to change his offensive playcaller next year. He needs to focus on being a HC and let someone else focus on the O scheme and clock management.
Cam Erving should be finished.
The one thing I primarily wanted to see over the course of this season was improvement. That is not happening.

I found the best solution is to stop watching at halftime.

RGB, these are great! I hope they never win again.
Can we have Hue coach the first half and bring back Pettine for the second?
The Bro_ns defensive scheme is totally outdated and there are good reasons why even the Pittsburgh Steelers rarely play base 3-4 personnel anymore. The NFL is primarily a passing league that puts a premium on quarterback play, 3 down linemen simply can’t generate enough QB pressure on their own. Juxtaposition that with the salient fact that big, edge-rushing outside linebackers can’t get to the QB before he’s thrown the ball to either a wide open slot receiver or someone named Jason Whitten.
My pre-season assessment was not wrong: this roster is as bad or worse than that of 1999. We talk non-stop about the same 5 or 6 draft busts, but at this point you can’t convince me that second rounder Nate Orchard is more productive than Brian Robiskie was at least occasionally, or that Xavier Cooper is … never mind, this season-long audition of a roster almost devoid of veteran infrastructure is sliding toward a farce that teaches young players all the wrong things. The presence of a single Joe Thomas is not enough to teach Mr. Erving that he cannot yank off an opponent’s helmet, or that this is not the optimum way to continue receiving paychecks.
Zero pressure on the QB, linebackers and secondary confused in coverage all day, tackling not of great interest to anyone. Would be a sloppy cliche to say that Horton has lost the defense, because nothing indicates they’ve ever bought what he’s selling. And I’ve given Chris Tabor a pass because he’s working with those too green to start on this league-worst roster, but how can there be holding on the majority of returns?
These are supposed to be talented coaches; sorry, when so many players neither know their own assignments nor understand the scheme there’s a disconnect that creates this type of carnage. Losses are one thing and expected. Browns players not appearing to be playing all that hard is something else. Cannot build if there is not a sufficient minimum of talent, heart and teaching suitable to the low, low level of the roster.
Nickel is their base.
Yep.
I’ll go ahead and pile on…
Our Moneyballers will not participate in a bidding war for Pryor and he will be playing for a different team next year.
Not sure how much Pryor wants to stick around witnessing this clusterf…

and Mike Pettine didn’t think Pryor was worth a roster spot. Makes me wonder if he should shoulder more blame for ruining Manziel.
hi AIR … it doesn’t matter what defense they play … that has to be some sort of execution , discipline & effort.
uptick for using JUXTAPOSITION & SALIENT in the same sentence.
hi HARV … i’ve recently said Horton has nothing to work with … nothing but rookies & retreads … and it seems like there’s someone new in there each week. but you are absolutely correct … that has to be some resemblance of discipline.
in think they pony-up for both Pryor & Collins.
I always believed he had a big role in it. I still think Manziel would have had plenty of problems he created for himself, but Brett Favre was able to have similar problems and succeed.
i saw a silver lining yesterday … they started Kessler over McCown. some may accuse Hue & the HBT of tanking & some (including me) wanna see if Kessler has the right stuff , especially since we’ll be sitting with some high draft picks again.
besides the first drive JOE mentioned above … Kessler led them right down the field on their 2nd drive , only to have Parkey hit the upright on his FG try. then Kessler led a nice 2 minute drill right before the half that resulted in a TD. the first halh was pretty good for the offense , the 2nd half not so much.
Kessler completed 70% of his passes yesterday 1 TD & NO turnovers … he is still showing nice accuracy , decision making & he’s not turning the ball over. it may not be saying much , but imo , Kessler has been the best Browns rookie QB since Kosar … and Kosar played on a playoff team , where Kessler is on a horrible team.
it’s not good that the Browns have had so many rookies starting at QB since 1999 … but Kessler appears to have the goods.
Agree about quality of players, but we’re now seeing deteriorating execution of basics and understanding of scheme as they get farther from training camp. Like players, coaches also cannot going through the motions and better figure out why veterans are playing like they don’t have a clue. And it’s far to ask if Hue is exercising sufficient oversight while he doubles as offensive play-caller. Everyone has assumed he’ll be fine at that because he once went 8-8. And again, they should not be expected to match the Dallas talent. Yesterday was straight high school stuff.
HARV & SAM have mentioned Hue calling the plays on offense … is this a big deal ? how much does a HC really do if he’s not calling plays ?? is there really that much to worry about as a HC ?
there are plenty of coaches that call their own plays … even a couple of rookie-type HC’s (Pederson , Gase etc.). could it be it’s a little overblown because we’re 0-9 ?
FAITH RESTORED! Lol. Imagine what Kessler would look like on Dallas.
Sure, it could be. The HC is like a CEO overseeing the entire enterprise while the OC is more like a division head responsible for a particular segment of the organization. Asking a CEO to handle all that running an entire organization requires while also being responsible for the day to day duties of someone responsible for a single arm of that organization is not a recipe for success, generally speaking. There are some HCs that call their own plays and have some success but much like finding Tom Brady in the seventh round it’s not really a strategy that consistently pays dividends.
yes , but you know how it is … as a business owner , i would like to be able to delegate as much as i can … but there are certain things i want to do myself.
This is my rudimentary game plan for the upcoming game against the Cowboys:
1: Cover Witten. He’s pretty slow but is more than five feet tall and can catch the ball.
2: Tackle. This is important so Elliot won’t just waltz through the secondary and score endlessly.
I am fairly confident of the win if we follow this plan. Go Browns!
