Cleveland Browns Progress Report: Week 6

October 19, 2016Cleveland Browns safety Jordan Poyer has been released from the hospital after being put there by an illegal hit in Week 6 against the Tennessee Titans. The illegal blindside block by Antonio Andrews was assessed a 15-yard penalty because, you know, it was illegal.
The fact that it was illegal is apparently something that eludes Antonio Andrews, who has shown no sympathy, remorse, or a basic understanding of what is legal or not on an NFL football field in 2016. Maybe someone with the Titans would like to have a word with Andrews about the play and his reaction in public since?
Here is a sampling of the Tweets that Andrews has had in the past few days even after deleting an Instagram post of his hit.

Here’s Andrews claiming he “can’t get fined for hitting with my shoulder.”

And for those who missed the original hit, here it is.

Poyer, who was in the hospital for a few days with a lacerated kidney and was also forced to drive home due to a lack of medical clearance to fly, has been playing it mostly cool. I mean, you can tell he’s a bit salty, but that’s about it.

I’m not going to get too high and mighty on this issue with a guy not understanding each and every nuance of the rules. And we all should just quit watching and playing football forever if we’re shocked and appalled by these occasional hits. It’s a violent sport played at top speed and no matter how much you legislate via yellow handkerchief, accidents will happen and guys will get hurt—sometimes majorly like with Jordan Poyer’s lacerated kidney, the same injury that was sustained by San Diego wide receiver Keenan Allen a season ago.
Still, you would expect this kind of thing to be a place for a team and their player development, communications, and PR folks to step in and maybe explain to Antonio Andrews why posting about his illegal hit—shoulder or not—that put a dude in the hospital is in poor taste.

I thought Poyer handled it very well when he said it was just part of the game. Kind of ridiculous that this Andrews fella would open his mouth like that. Poyer might have friends across the league who would happily crack back on this kid.
I wonder what Andrews would think if someone hit him illegally, severely injuring him and making it hard for him to get another contract. Wonder if he would still get 8 hours of sleep then. Sounds like the only way he’ll ever understand (read: think like a normal human).
unfortunately , i think special teams players & defensive players , when their team gets a turnover , live for these kinds of hits.
your head has to be on a swivel … cuz they are lookin’ to nail you .

We won’t, but give it a couple generations – a shame because the chess match is such a beauty to ponder each set play

And it looks like he deleted some of those ridiculous tweets and made his instagram private. Maybe someone with the Titans did speak with him.
Conversely, there is a classy way, as a decent human being, to handle having taken someone out of a game over an illegal hit (or even questionably illegal hit) (the first 1:15 is particularly relevant, and instructive):

Regardless of the legality of the play, nailing a guy with a blindside hit is no reason to pound your chest. So you wiped out a guy who didn’t see you coming — big whoop. Real tough.
It’s like those clowns who do a sack dance when they get to the QB unblocked. Yeah, tell us how great you are when nobody blocks you.
One of the things I hate is Defensive players who talk trash about big hits. How many defensive players are subject to big hits? ZERO. It’s easy to hit people when you are not going to be hit back. Unlike some other spots, it really hard to get retribution on a PoS like this.
Also, does Andrews not accept that he was flagged for an illegal hit? It’s not part of football – it clearly says so in the rule book.
“Hey! I took an awesome cheap shot on another player and there is nothing they can do about it.” Real warrior there…
Well, he is a running back, so there’s a good chance.
They need to change suspension rules. If an illegal hit injures a player, that player should be suspended until the injured player is back on the field +2 (or however many) games. Simple as that in any sport. You illegally injure a player, you are not playing until that player is.
After seeing the video, the hit was not very necessary and somewhat cheap, but really head on a swivel. There are always guys looking to clean people up. Gotta pay attention.
