Will the NBA be watching Draymond?: While We’re Waiting
October 24, 2016Cleveland Browns Week 7 Winners and Losers
October 24, 2016With the Cleveland Browns falling to 0-7 on the season, one which has seen plenty of veteran players either cut or moved for draft picks, trade rumors surrounding Hall of Fame-bound left tackle Joe Thomas have bubbled up once again. The trick, as always, is finding a partner willing to part with what the Browns want in return.
From Pro Football Talk:
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, a trade is possible this year. However, real obstacles exist to getting a deal done.
The Vikings, for example, would be very interested in Thomas. However, with a first-round pick and more already shipped to the Eagles for quarterback Sam Bradford and little cap space remaining, it’s a long shot that he’d go to Minnesota. The Cardinals, Giants, and Seahawks have varying degrees of interest in Thomas as well; the challenge would be coming up with what the Browns want (the source says it’s a second-round pick) and the cap space.
Last season, it was the Denver Broncos who wanted Thomas to protect Peyton Manning en route to their eventual Super Bowl victory. It’s believed that the liklihood of a deal this time around are much less, though PFT adds that if the Browns need to move Thomas (you know, because they don’t already have enough cap space) they could be forced to take less than their second-round asking price at which point the New England Patriots would enter into the fray.
Thomas, as has been the case for much of the last decade, is rated among the best left tackles in all of football, excelling in both run blocking and pass protection. A truly elite talent, there’s a school of thought that would want someone of his skill set to be in Cleveland when the quarterback of the future is finally found, but with the Browns having wasted nearly all of Thomas’ career, there are a lot of fans who would like to see No. 73 finally have a shot at a ring.

Sadly, I’m finally coming around to the idea that Joe should be released from this hell-hole so that his entire HOF career won’t be a colossal waste of talent. Trade him to somebody good.

It would be FOOLISH to trade him, as he is the only thing keeping our playoff hopes alive. Oh, wait.
That said, the Browns certainly don’t NEED to trade him. If they can’t get want they want for him, then they shouldn’t trade him. (But they should trade him.)
Better hide this from Bode.

I could actually see New England paying whatever price they need to pay to get him.
It’s nearling the end for Brady and it would be nice (for NE) to throw all the chips on the table and make those last 2 or 3 runs at a title. It would cement Brady’s and Belichick’s status as best-ever at their respective jobs, and make New England the de facto greatest dynasty in NFL history. Of course they say they won’t pay, but let’s see when it’s “Go Time.”
I mean, the line can’t get any WORSE! (Can it?)
Think they’d give up Sheard?
hahahah!!! Oh man, i would love it if that was their offer.
Numerically? No.
Good lord if there was ever a day to make that trade…Tuesday would be it.
Still no sign of Bode…

When you’ve already played 6 QBs in seven games WITH a Hall of Fame left tackle suiting up every week in front of them, you’d think the Joe Thomas trade rumors would go away forever. We already need a center and right tackle; why trade Joe for a late first round pick that you’re just going to have to use on his replacement anyway (especially when that replacement is as likely to be the next Cam Erving/Shonn Coleman than the next Joe Thomas)? Who knows, even Bitonio may never be the same after the L-F surgery–in which case you’re down to approx. zero OL of the future.
For the first time since 2007, I actually like the young skill players on our roster–Pryor, Corey Coleman, Crow, and Duke Johnson. Barnidge and Andrew Hawkins are nice veteran pieces as well. And while we still need a QB of the future, our QB’s of the present have played well enough for us to be .500 if we had even a semi-competent D. My point is there is some promising talent on offense that will be completely wasted and undermined if we go with an inexperienced OL the next few years. Keep Joe, draft an OL and RT in the first 3 rounds next season, and see where the offense goes. Please!!

Hue Jackson is on our side!
We are the 1989 Dallas Cowboys
JT is still one of the better left tackles in the game. I don’t think you trade that for a 2nd round pick in a million years. And for that matter, while I recognize he’s on the downward slope of his effectiveness and won’t play for another 8yrs, I think he still has several good years left in him and it’s clear you can’t develop a QB behind an OL that can’t protect. Just drafting a guy isn’t enough, as you have injuries and things, and the one thing mass roster turnover NEVER achieves is depth. If the Browns want to see QB success, whether it’s RG3, Cody Kessler, or some guy they draft next spring they have to shore up the OL, which means keeping the players that are already good, developing the young guys, AND drafting another quality candidate or two. Two out of three isn’t good enough. Trade JT and you can’t get it done.
To outweigh those things you need to get serious value in return. I get (and agree with) the strategy that quantity is king when drafting, but take a page from the Indians’ handbook and don’t force a trade if the right buyer with the right motivation isn’t there. You can still trade him next year if you really want to.
