Cavs add point guard Toney Douglas

he Cleveland Cavaliers may be using a committee approach to their reserve point guard spot, but that committee just had another body added to it as the team signed Toney Douglas on Monday morning.

Douglas, 30, has played for six teams over seven NBA seasons, including the New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings, and Miami Heat. Throughout his career, Douglas has averaged 11.9 points and 4.0 assists as a starter (65 games). Most recently, with the New Orleans Pelicans, he averaged 8.7 points, 2.6 assists, 2.3 boards, 1.1 steals and 1.3 three pointers made 61 games, 18 of which were starts. While his season average will not turn any heads, Douglas used the Pels’ regular season finale to showcase his talents, making 6-of-13 field goals and 8-of-8 free throws to finish with 22 points, four rebounds, five assists, four steals and a pair of 3-pointers in 42 minutes played.

Douglas will immediately compete with rookie Kay Felder for the backup role behind Kyrie Irving. By all accounts, Felder has done exactly what has been asked of him through camp, but the Cavs were wise to add a veteran who can space the floor and play defense to play behind Irving as needed. Essentially…he’ll do what Toney Douglas do.

In order to make room for Douglas, the Cavs waived Eric Moreland.
