October 24, 2016The Cleveland Browns lost their seventh game of the season, falling to the Cincinnati Bengals, 31-17. It was a weird game to say the least. The Browns’ leading passer in the game was Kevin Hogan, who came in during the second quarter after Cody Kessler left with a concussion. Hogan marked the sixth quarterback (in just seven games) this season to play a snap for the Browns. Hogan completed 12-of-24 for 100 yards and two interceptions. But where he did the most damage was with his legs. The rookie led the team in rushing, running for 104 yards and a touchdown on seven carries. The leading receiver was tight end Gary Barnidge, who caught six passes for 66 yards.
The Browns fought extremely hard for a team who had to go to their sixth quarterback of the season. They just do not have the talent – especially on defense – to win games. The Browns defense was shredded by the two-headed monster of A.J. Green and Jeremy Hill. Green had eight receptions for 169 yards and a touchdown; Hill rushed just nine times, but gained 168 yards and a touchdown on those limited touches. The Browns defense allowed 559 yards of total offense. No team can win allowing that much offense, especially a team who is playing its sixth quarterback of the season. But, the Browns somehow made it semi-close, like they have seemed to do for the majority of the season thus far. That should shed a bright light on Hue Jackson’s coaching.
The first quarter started with a dud by the Browns defense. On the first drive of the game, the Bengals were able to drive 75 yards in just seven plays and in just under 3 minutes. It was not good. The Browns offense stalled on their opening drive, giving the Bengals the ball right back. Cincinnati looked to put more points on the board, but the defense was able to hold their offense to a field goal attempt, which went wide from the foot of former Ohio State Buckeyes kicker Mike Nugent, leaving the score at 7-0. The quarter ended with the Browns on the move, poised to put up their first points of the day.
Cleveland opened the second quarter by finishing off their first sustained drive of the game with a short field goal. The Browns and Bengals swapped touchdowns on the next two drives, with both defenses struggling mightily. On a negative note on the Browns touchdown drive, quarterback Cody Kessler left the game with a concussion and was ruled out for the rest of the game. But, the Browns run game picked him up and really ran down the Bengals’ throat. The most Brownsy thing happened on the last play of the half: The Bengals threw up a deep Hail Mary pass with time expiring, where inexcusably, A.J. Green caught the pass in the endzone over three Browns defenders, making the halftime score, 21-10 Bengals.
With backup, backup, backup, backup Kevin Hogan in, the Browns offense started the half with a great touchdown drive. Hogan led the unit on an eight play, 75-yard drive. The former Stanford quarterback finished the drive with a Michael Vick-esque 28-yard touchdown scramble. But with all the high hope and excitement from the Browns touchdown drive, the defense did their best to squash those feelings. On the second play of the ensuing drive by the Bengals, running back Jeremy Hill ran 74 yards to the house to extend the Bengals lead to 28-17. This play pretty much marked the end of the game for the Browns and the fun. The Bengals finished the quarter by adding another field goal and making the lead 31-17.
The fourth quarter was just a long, weird march to the Browns seventh loss of the season. Neither team was able to score. Interestingly, Hogan surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark late in the final quarter. But in the end, the Browns lost to the Cincinnati Bengals, 31-17.

Cleveland falls to 0-7 on the season. The Browns returns home to face the New York Jets next week. It is anyone’s guess on who starts that game for both teams. At least Tuesday – Game 1 of the World Series for the Indians and the Cavs’ ring ceremony and banner raising – is just two days away!

Hey guys, I posted this over at OBR and would be interested to hear what you think about this:
I realize that the talent on our D is suspect at best but this seems beyond the pale. They are beyond awful with a few exceptions from the DLine and Kirksey. It looked to me that Demario Davis was consistently out of position on run plays today (which is supposed to be his strength). The secondary is frequently, laughably out of position, employing horrific technique. I get that there are more talented players out there but all these guys were/are good enough to make it to the NFL. Are they really all this terrible or is it this coaching/scheme? Has a Horton D ever been good? I think I remember AZ being good but they were loaded with talent and were still really good after he left. Help me understand what is going on with this defense if you can.

Nope, currently RGB is the closest to being out. If the Browns win only one game, that makes it impossible for them to go 0 – 16 this season and knocks RGB out of the game. That’s why he’s still on the verge…
You still need one more loss to be on the verge… and another loss after that one in order to be out of the game. So no worries… for now.
I’m still unclear on why the shot to Kessler’s head wasn’t a penalty.
The Browns appear to be the only team in the league whose quarterback is fair game.
Maybe next time the geniuses in Berea want to tear down the team in order to rebuild it, they’ll think better of tearing it all the way down.
What a joke. Glad I missed it. My wife and I spent the afternoon walking around Vermilion, blissfully unaware of today’s fresh hell.

On the bright side, it’s never been easier to play Last Man Standing. Browns opponent every week is 13 gimmes. All you gotta do is pick four winners on your own.
Ray Horton Jr. has consistently fielded bottom 8 defenses. Would need to dig to see how much better they did when he left, but let’s just say he and his staff haven’t been missed as they travel around the NFL.
I hated the Horton (re)addition when it happened, and I hate it just as much today. However, if they wanted to make sure they tank, it was a good hire.

The worst part about this: I know that this guy also received some sort of disciplinary action for failing to follow proper safety procedures. Idiot. Appropriate (fwiw) insult to injury.

I remember a press conference where Hue was asked why he hired Ray and there was a lot of hemming and hawing; kind of like he just needed somebody and knew his name.

Went to my daughter’s soccer game, then played 9 holes of golf. Best game time afternoon I’ve had yet this year.
I’ll put it this way: I see no reason for anybody to spend valuable time and money on tickets to the Browns when they can get much the same effect by paying somebody $20 to hit them over the head with a brick. Alternately, I could try to write a best-selling novel about the latest season entitled “50 Shades of Brown”.

i could see your point if the drafting hadn’t been so horrible since 1999 … i’m all-in on the total purge.
Ray also has NO TALENT to work with … so , it’s really hard to judge at this point. Haden is the only veteran & he can’t stay on the field … some may consider D.Davis a veteran , but i’d rather take my chances with Scooby Wright over Davis any day.
At some point over the past several years, I would have liked to see a Horton defense overachieve the talent as Hue Jackson offenses seem to consistently do.
