Addition by subtraction with Robert Griffin III?
September 15, 2016CLE vs DET: The Showdowns That Built Three Rivalries
September 16, 2016What’s up everybody? Welcome to Friday’s edition of WWW. It’s been a bit of a crazy week for me, what with the end of the Browns season occurring sometime on Monday. And I’m still in the afterglow of a Stipe Miocic win at Quicken Loans Arena last Saturday night, so let’s start right there.
Dave Bryan runs a Steelers site, but he rules anyway (except for that whole Steelers thing…)
Rock requested it, and it sparked me to contact Dave from Steelers Depot to podcast about the AFC North. Dave might be all in for the Stillers, but he knows so much and is so well-versed on all the teams in the league that it’s a blast talking to him. We discussed Week 1 and what to expect from the Browns, Bengals, Ravens, and Steelers for the rest of the year. We also discussed the Browns trade of Justin Gilbert to a divisional rival. Hope you enjoy.

Stipe Miocic is the most normal baddest man on the planet…
Stipe Miocic tells everyone he’s a regular dude and a firefighter, but that’s not a marketing line. I’ve met Stipe a few times, but I don’t know him personally or anything. However, my friend Jamie is the one who posted this photo of the champ on Instagram this week just a couple days after he defended the UFC Heavyweight Championship to retain the belt. This is the man who had a sold out Q chanting his name on Saturday night, and here he is back at work taking a course in Pediatric Advanced Life Support a few days later. That’s not marketing folks.
If you want to hear all about that event and how it was one of the greatest sports moments of my life to be in attendance at UFC 203, check out the podcast I did this week with Jamie.
Movie Review: The Fundamentals of Caring
If it’s not a franchise in the summer and it’s not worthy of Oscar buzz, what happens to a character-driven film? In 2016 it might be showcased at the Sundance Film festival, purchased by Netflix, and released via their platform rather than ever hitting a theater like “The Fundamentals of Caring” did. It’s not a bad thing, but it does feel a little strange to watch a really good movie starring names like Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez going straight to Netflix.
The legacy of being “straight to video” is tough for those of us old enough to remember the end of the Blockbuster Video regime. Only we of that certain age remember wondering “Wait, when did they make four additional films in the American Pie series and why is it starring Stifler’s kid brother?” Or, “I only watched Wild Things to see Neve Campbell and Denise Richards make out, so why would I watch a sequel with neither of them?” You know, hypothetically. Things have obviously changed.
I loaded up “The Fundamentals of Caring” this week, and my wife and I couldn’t stop laughing out loud. Paul Rudd plays Ben, who is going to help care for a wheel-chair bound smartass named Trevor, played by Craig Roberts. The two of them pull pranks on each other in a near-constant roast battle back and forth as they deal with the struggles of their circumstances. I don’t want to ruin it, but they go on a road trip, meet Selena Gomez’ character Dot, and each of the characters actually accomplishes something for themselves by film’s end.
This film was funny, and made you actually care about the characters and root for them. It told a story worth telling, was well acted, looked nice and was generally pretty efficient as well at 97 minutes. Efficiency in filmmaking doesn’t mean “short,” either. It’s just to note that after a long summer of self-important blockbusters made for near-unlimited budgets, you appreciate films that are just long enough to tell their stories without adding a bunch of nonsense to try and create gravity artificially.
The Fundamentals of Caring knows what it is, and is happy to be just that. I’m constantly working on my top movies list for 2016 and I still haven’t seen a lot of things, but this is easily one of the nicest watches I’ve had this year. I certainly liked watching this movie more than many that I paid to see in the theater on the big screen like Warcraft, Ghostbusters, and Independence Day: Resurgence. We won’t find many films like that heading to Netflix directly anytime soon, you know unless they spin them off in direct-to-video fashion like they did the three additional Starship Troopers movies you probably never watched. Then again, after seeing Netflix’ selection and the quality of this film, it seems unlikely they’d bid for those films.
Your weekly moment of soccer zen…
I don’t always find the most zen-like moments, but this week after watching four other clips on Reddit, this one showed up like a message from the heavens. It screamed “ZEN” in the most peaceful way possible. Everyone. Your mantras…
I’m too “Grown Up” for Danny Brown…
I know I’m supposed to listen to Danny Brown because Rock tells me so. I never really did it much, but this week I decided to check it out again. I really love the music, but I don’t feel right listening to some of the lyrics. I think that makes me an old man, but I’m admitting it. Whatever. Regardless of songs I can’t feel that comfortable listening to, I’ll go ahead and play “Grown Up” this week. It’s great.

Danny Brown is the absolute best. By far my favorite rapper and it’s not even close.
As a person who probably won’t listen to the entire podcast today, would someone tell me his take on Gilbert? The few steelers friends I have thought they fleeced the browns.
thumbs up for the soccer zen !!
“The Fundamentals of Caring” would be a great title for the Browns 2016 media guide
The Steelers view it as getting a kick returner that they hope might someday be able to play CB for them. He’s not too high on Gilbert and doesn’t think Gilbert will be on the Steelers long term. But the Steelers gave up nothing for him, so it was worth the trade.
