September 6, 2016When a 53-man roster has 18 rookies, the odds of a few first-year guys starting improves drastically. With the Cleveland Browns releasing their unofficial depth chart heading into their Week 1 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles, a surprise starter comes in the way of rookie Joe Schobert who will line up across from fellow rookie Emmanuel Ogbah as the team’s starting outside linebackers—one of the league’s more preeminent game-changing positions.
Schobert, a fourth-round selection out of Wisconsin, showed peaks and valleys during the team’s preseason slate, but finished on a high note in the fourth week. While some fans may be skeptical, Browns head coach Hue Jackson apparently saw enough to promote the rookie ahead of last season’s second round pick Nate Orchard. With the Browns very thin at the outside linebacker position (having traded Barkevious Mingo and terminating the contract of Paul Kruger), it was widely expected that Orchard would draw the start against Philly, but he will likely see snaps in packages or be rotated in to provide the starters with rest.
“I’m just going to go in and play my game,” Schobert said following the release of Kruger. “Numbers go down so there are going to be more opportunities for guys in the room, and I’ll just do my best to fill that space.”
On the offensive side of the ball, Corey Coleman, the Browns’ first round selection, will start opposite of Terrelle Pryor at the wide receiver position. Wide receiver Ricardo Louis and defensive end Carl Nassib are also in line to receive snaps at their respective positions come Sunday. Jamar Taylor is slated to start opposite Joe Haden at cornerback, but rookie Tracy Howard could see time in dime packages with Tramon Williams sliding inside to cover the slot. It is also expected that the Browns could utilize a lot of four-man fronts which could include rookie defensive end Carl Nassib.

We should see quite a bit of all three of our top OLBs, I would think. Maybe like a 75/75/50 snap split. We may even get some sprinklings of Lemonier, if you like that kind of thing.

I know the depth chart has Higgins as 3rd WR on one side and Louis as 2nd wide receiver on the other, but if Louis plays more non-special teams snaps than Higgins, I’ll eat my hat.
A zesting of Lemonier would be fine.
In Week 1 or by the end of the season. And, what type of hat?

looked like wearing cement shoes, to me. Then again, Davis didn’t exactly do much to be noticed. If there was ever a roster where Scoobie might be able to stick around long enough to learn NFL “intangibles,” to be Eddie Johnson, this might be the squad. But h just looks so slow.
good observation … yes , he looked slow , but he also showed good instincts & actually knows how to tackle.
Are we already at that time of year when we pronounce Watson (or whoever) “can’t miss”? So depressing …

I think both, but I feel safer about week 1 than betting the whole season… you know, injuries and what have you.

I have been pretty dang good at picking the QB who would be drafted No. 1 overall really early. One of the “gifts” of being a Browns fan, I suppose.
No QB is cannot miss and none of these guys is Andrew Luck. Watson and Kelly are both good but I do need to see more of each (I was already all-in on Goff by this time last year as long as he didn’t fall off, which he did not).
Soooooo….do we want to lose vs Philly or win? Undoubtedly the Browns will be worse this season than the Eagles, so do we want the Browns to beat them so that the Philly pick we receive will be higher?

It is sad that “knows how to tackle” is something we can only say about specific players on this team.
I didn’t see any good instincts, I only read about him having them in college. Which is like saying “all Colt does is win.” We Browns fans need to be ruthlessly objective, Tiger. Not a smidgen of ruth, Tiger. No clutching blankies. The sooner we know whether Sashi is competent to perform the new set of duties he has talked his way into the sooner we know which direction gets us out of this 17 year pigsty.

fair enough … but , i watched all the pre-season games & he absolutely showed good instincts … not much to lose & everything to gain when a 7th round draft pick comes aboard.

and someone else will join the QB conversation as well … if there is a sure-fire guy next year , or anything close to it , we’ll probably be sitting with 2 top-10 picks … 2 top-6 picks ? … 2 top-4 picks ??
after we watch this season , we may have to take as many good defensive players as we can next year.
Of course, their most significant decision was to pass on Wentz and trade down. Beginning Sunday, we will see the results of that decision. If Wentz turns out to be really good, then we must begin to question Sashi.
i know what you’re saying , but better to judge sashi , berry & depodesto at the end of the season … not after the pre-season or the first game.
