September 3, 2016Trades in the NFL are rare. Trades within a team’s division are even more so. Nevertheless, as the Clevleand Browns look to trim their roster to 53 men, Sashi Brown and company have traded former first-round draft pick Justin Gilbert to the Pittsburgh Steelers for undisclosed compensation, this according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

On Friday afternoon, it was reported that the once-touted prospect would not be guaranteed a roster spot despite the Browns defense likely being among the league’s worst in 2016. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns will net themselves a future sixth-rounder for their troubles.

Gilbert will not only leave Cleveland as one of the more recent draft busts, but one that may have provided the largest sting given the opportunity cost of his selection. While Johnny Manziel flamed out quickly as the team’s quarterback at No. 22, the Ray Farmer-led Browns traded down from the fourth overall pick to the ninth spot, only to move up to eight to select Gilbert out of Oklahoma State. The fourth selection was subsequently used wide receiver Sammy Watkins; pick No. 5 was Pro Bowl linebacker Khalil Mack; and pick No. 9 was Pro Bowl linebacker Anthony Barr, while the 12th, 13th, 17th and 18th selections were used on Pro Bowlers in Odell Beckham Jr., Aaron Donald, Zack Martin and C.J. Mosley, respectively.
The 24-year-old Gilbert played in 23 games, recording 39 tackles with nine passes defensed. He is the second first-round selection traded in recent weeks with Barkevious Mingo being sent to New England. The Browns’ roster must be at 53 men b 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Assuming we get a draft pick out of this, (my guess, a 5th) at this rate, the Browns will have 20 picks going into the 2017 draft.
Bravo, Sashi (Why did you cut Desir?!)!
Ugh. Why the Steelers? They should have a “Never trade” list with 2 teams: them and the Ravens
When he fails there it’s going to be doubly sweet using their 6th in ’18.
He was going to be cut
Yep. We rooked the Steelers for a failure that was going to be cut. Nice work, HBT.
That was the draft where I knew they were going to take Khalil Mack – best player in the draft, position of need, intensity not found on roster. At this point I really need to have someone wipe my draft memory drive.

Impressive that they got a team to bite on a guy who most likely was going to get cut anyway.
I don’t know about “impressive”. We’re only going to get a back another guy who is not a guarantee to earn a roster spot.
I want to say that was the worst draft in recent memory, but they all kinda blur together.
It’s kinda like dividing by zero, whose to say which is worse.
I kinda look at it like a kid on Halloween. After you sort through all the kit kats, snickers and other assorted goodies, you’re left with the licorice Good and Plenty’s and the Atomic Fireballs. You’ll never eat either of them.

You can just slide those fireballs right over here…
Ahhh, so you were THAT kid.
You cant operate in fear like that.

Well, 13 of 14 made it so, pretty good chance.
That seems more like an indictment of our ability to keep top round picks as roster worthy.
Steelers fans think he failed simply because he was in Cleveland. They obviously never watched him try to play professional football.
Something > Nothing.
It’s close
A 6th round pick in two years is as close as you can get to “nothing”. Besides, my contention is not that it’s not “something” anyway. It’s that it’s not “impressive” or having “rooked” someone. It’s about a meaningless a roster transaction as you can get, yet somehow it deserved it’s own post and a comment section praising every little thing the Browns do. So I guess exactly like the last 17 years.
You know, you’re dead on when it comes to identifying crappy Halloween candy. The funny thing, though, is when you grow up those flavors make for some of the BEST shots. Go figure.
agree. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have taken a 6th, but another org might validly think: we just don’t want him going to a division rival, who won’t be able to claim him on waivers with so many worse teams happy to take a look at a former first round CB. The Browns will give plenty of playing time to Jamar Taylor, another team’s recent second round bust. Presumably, Sashi doesn’t view the Steelers as a rival in the near future.
The only reason you ever trade with a division rival is when you think you are definitively getting the better end of the deal. So, Brown thinks 6th round pick >>> Gilbert. Also, perhaps he’s thinking even having Gilbert on their roster might hurt them. Not exactly an endorsement 🙂
(that is emotional though – Sashi probably just offered Gilbert to all 31 teams and took highest offer)
Or the fact we wiped out 30/53 from our final roster of 2015
I heart Bitonio
So, Banner’s draft was still worse
Who’s praising every little thing the Browns do? Nobody. They got a draft pick from a rival for a guy that was going to be cut. What’s the problem with offering a little praise for a good business move?
The “every little thing” was obviously hyperbole and not accurate, but I respect the pedantry, I’m guilty of it too on many occasions.
Since it needs to be cleared up, I’m not saying they shouldn’t have done this, or that it’s not probably going to be a net positive for the franchise. It’s that it’s incredibly meaningless, and any gain is so unlikely to make a difference, yet we’re throwing around words like “impressive” and “rooked”. I get why it’s noteworthy (well, maybe not in Cleveland, where giving up on a former first round pick is a near annual event), but the praise for meaningless things sounds a lot like the crap I’ve heard about this franchise for the past 17 years.
I just don’t think it’s meaningless. Sure, a 6th round pick is, in and of itself, and standing alone, a meaningless thing. But that acquisition is almost certainly designed and targeted for future acquisition, and it could translate into part of a 3rd round pick or better (theoretically). I’m convinced the Browns were going to cut Gilbert. To get a piece of a future 3rd round pick is a good move. It’s a shame that it’s a move they had to make (and we’ve seen them make far too many times with their 1st round picks), but I’m willing to give a little bit of credit where it’s due. Sort of like when my kids actually place their dirty dishes in the dishwasher. Sure, it’s what I expect them to do, but it’s still enough for me to give a “good job” (with an under-the-breath muttering of “finally”) when they do it. It has meaning in my house.
“and it could translate into part of a 3rd round pick or better”
I guess what it really boils down to, is this this is what I mean when I talk about the crap I’ve heard about the franchise for the past 17 years. So much is painted in almost a best-case-scenario light. We’ve already turned dumping a toxic asset into a third round pick.
Looking at a draft value chart, a late 6th is worth moving up three spots in the third. How many guys are we going to look at in the third that we’ll be glad we moved up three spots for?
I get that these are new guys (again), and maybe they deserve some benefit of the doubt, but we’re still talking about grown adults, highly paid for their ability to manage the roster. They aren’t children, or even interns making copies and getting coffee.
