Fighting the Falcons: Ohio State β Bowling Green Preview
September 1, 2016New writers, VR, and Pearl Jam: While We’re Waiting
September 2, 2016The Browns are finally done with the preseason, falling to the Chicago Bears 21-7 on Thursday at First Energy Stadium. The loss makes the Browns final preseason record 0-4. The Browns were led throughΒ the air by quarterback Josh McCown, who completed 8 of 15 for 73 yards and an interception. On the ground, running back Jahwan Edwards led the rush attack, carrying the ball four times for 34 yards. And on the receiving end, wide receiver Josh Gordon led the team with three catches for 29 yards. The Browns are now eyeing their 2016 season opener on September 11 in Philadelphia against the Eagles.
First Team Recap
The Browns first team defense took the field first against most of the Chicago Bears second team offense. The defense allowed one first down on a third down conversion, where they could not wrap up the runner before the sticks. But after that conversion, the Browns got off the field, capped off by good pressure by Carl Nassib and Emmanuel Ogbah, ending in a sack by Ogbah. On their second series on the field, the Bears drove right down the field against a lot of the first team defense, but were held for a field goal in the redzone. Nassib made a nice play deflecting a third down pass that halted the drive. The first defense did not see the field together after that series.
The Browns first team offense took the field and did not do much in their first series. The offense rushed for a couple yards, but was unable to convert the third down, going three and out very quickly. On their second series, the offense had a quality drive, but it stalled after the offensive line struggled with picking up the pressure. But, the first team offense ended on a high note when the special teams gave them great field position on a fumble recovery. The offense started in the redzone and ended the series with a four-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Crowell.
Games Notes and Observations
- The most exciting part of the defense will be Carl Nassib and Emmanuel Ogbah. Both players played well throughout the preseason and that continued against the Bears. The two put pressure on the quarterback and affected the quarterbacks throwing lanes with their height.
- The teamβs tackling is just atrocious. There were so many missed tackles throughout the preseason and in Thursdayβs game.
- The Browns young backup corners have not developed as well as I had hoped. I had high hopes for them, but the young corners like Charles Gaines, Justin Gilbert and Pierre Desir have just not improved a lot this preseason. The cornerback group looked like it could be a deep one, but now it is shallow with some major question marks. I was wrong about this unit in my preseason preview series.
- Cam Johnson played well in the game. He put pressure on the quarterback and really showcased his length and athleticism. It could be a big game for him earning a spot on the final 53-man roster.
- Josh McCown is so up and down. One pass he will heave an arid throw way over the receiverβs head, then on the next he ropes it in on a tight throw.
- Armonty Bryant had a nice game. He has some nice pressures, which is a huge need for the defense, along with blocked field goal. His suspension is a killer for the Browns.
- Cody Kessler has a lot to work on. He holds onto the ball way too long, which allows the pressure to get to him. He is a big work in progress.
- Jordan Howard spliced the Browns backup run defense. He was impressive.

Really bummed Kessler missed the wide open receiver on the ~20yd pass up the middle (I think it was to Higgins). At least he made the right decision, I guess. I’m part of the small minority that was optimistic for him but he has a long long way to go. Huge Action has quite a bit more whispering to do.
Nassib is a rock star. Ogbah is going to be at least OK. So, 2 down, 9 to go on defense.
Our 2018 4th round draft choice accounted for 360 net yards of field position, while the offense matched half that at 187 yds.
Duke Johnson looked good, both times he got the ball.
McCown did not help Sashi last night. He looked very much like the 13 in the 1-13 equation.
No fumbles on punt returns. Good job Corey Colemen, em, or was that Taylor Gabriel, I’m so confused?
And Gaines has one of the best names in football. That is exactly what happens to opposing receivers.
Gonna be a long year Browns fans, again.
No snark this time. In all seriousness, RGIII looks fine. The plan for Kessler needs to be 2018 and beyond. If they do trade McCown (and dangling 4th round picks in front of HBT is like raw meat to a starving lion), they will need to sign Davis or some other schlep to heave the ball if RGIII gets hurt. Kessler is a long way away from being NFL ready.

Snark, you say? OK
I was referring to me. My other comment was pure snark.
are you sure the Nassib rock star comment is pure snark? that comment has a whole lot of rational in it.
hi MG … i personally would rather see nassib & ogbah out there over kruger & mingo , even though i had to watch mingo making plays for the patriots last night.

same thing every game this pre-season … bad defense , especially the run defense … and still too many penalties.
the offense looks decent & is way ahead of the defense … the time corey coleman missed is showing … he’s got to get it going since we have no josh gordon for 4 weeks.
it won’t be long before schobert & scooby wright are starting LB’s … they both play with passion & actually know how to tackle … i haven’t soon free-agent veteran LB d.davis do doodley squat.
hey , i actually saw TE seth devalve on the field last night … and he even made a couple of catches … did WR ricardo louis even play ??
Well officially I’m apathetic, so I’ll walk the line from time to time.

first unsuspecting victim up , please … oh, yes , we will be underdogs every single week & they will be expecting an easy time … not up in here !!
“…they both play with passion & actually know how to tackle…”
I believe the rebuild completely centers around building the entire team out of this mindset. While they will do all they can to win this season it’s going to take two more drafts before they can field this team.
Looking at the roster, there is about 11-12 keepers. 2 more drafts is about right.

i would agree … and most of the keepers are currently on the offense.
Can you make one in the old uniforms? Watching those Ambrose and Darden highlights were mesmerizing…….
You keep using that word, but I don’t think you know what it means.
Apathetic souls don’t post detailed thoughts about Browns preseason Game 4

Joe Thomas! Shhh, keep smiling during your locker room interview. Just blink twice and touch your left earlobe and the Navy SEALs are on the way. It’ll be fine – in fact, Sashi can’t believe you haven’t kicked his door down yet. We’ll still love you, always love you, but if we’re being hunnerdfifty we’re starting wondering what’s wrong with you, whether you even give a crap about getting out anymore. Or whoa, maybe it’s not you, we’re watching a periodically refreshed clone like Sam Rockwell in “Moon.”
Ok, can’t believe I actually watched a bunch of that. Any questions about Griffin’s “revitalization” by our QB whisperer? Fifth year in the league and dude stares at his receiver like I stared at Ms.Tenney (only the hottest 6th grade teacher God granted to a public school). We all know the imminent ugliness. The pick 6s, the chucks and ducks. And we all see the team’s last, best draft pick bait. We see what’s about to happen in Denver and the horror slowly comes into sharp focus. No! No! (yes … shhh … yes …).
Welcome, people. The Mark Sanchez Era is upon you.
Step 1: 0-4…check!
Step 2: 0-16…pending.

Is this where I come to freak out about the 4th preseason game? Do I need a ticket for this ride?
Okay I admit, I actually haven’t watched the game yet, and I’m not entirely sure that I will. You’ve got the Browns’ offense working on sustained drives rather than big plays, so you’re taking the woods out of the bag and playing only with irons and a putter (no hybrids allowed). You’ve got the Bears 2nd and 3rd team players fighting for the lives to stay on the roster. At this point you start to feel like you’re in the movie Conception and you don’t know what level you’re on anymore. Maybe these snaps are meaningful and predictive. Maybe they’re nowhere near reality. The annoying part is that we all have to live with this last performance for the next 9 days and listen to various Cleveland and national media sources worry over it. I ain’t scurd. Let the season begin with the craptastic Eagles and we’ll see where we are.
hi PAT … uptick for the golf analogy.
… uptick for Ms. Tenney.
*schwing !!* … “liitle HARV … could you come up here and do this math problem on the board … no thanks , Ms. Tenney … i’ll take a zero.”
Completely understand not being able to see the game. I heard the team SunnySide flying unicorn hunt was last night. Did you guys get a rainbow one?
+^ on JT and Moon. Not only is he the best LT in the league, there is no one better at saying “we’re gonna suck, but it’s different this time”.
We thought we found a unicorn, but turns out it was just Jason Giambi (h/t Sportsyelling). Maybe next year.

yeah, like how does he keep the intensity up, play after play, loss after loss, when he’s protecting guys who he knows can’t make plays even with time: Quinn, Colt, Weeden, Seneca Wallace, Delhomme, Campbell, Johnny … And same goes for the rogue’s gallery of running backs. That’s why if I’m him, I demand out. It’s like Pavarotti singing in a shower, in a cabin, in Anarctica, 239 miles from the nearest sentient being. I’d ask myself: I have a gift, what did I do with it?
It is amazing. In a play last night, there was a Bears DL who was beefing, and Thomas, in a slightly irritated way, calmly explained to him why he was hit. He even pointed to the video replay to prove his point.
The guy is a consummate pro. Always into playing the game. With the CTE risks, he should be doing it for a meaningful team.
But I also think if they trade him, they cross the Rubicon. They better be able to conquer Rome.

Oh boy… I knew something didn’t sound right. I’ll fix it in the previous comment and acknowledge my idiocy here for titling the movie “Conception”.
And yet, he’s stayed in Antarctica of his own accord. If he wanted out, the team would let him out. Maybe it’s Stockholm Syndrome?
