OSU standout wrestler Kyle Snyder wins Olympic gold in Rio
August 23, 2016Rational, Snark, or Conspiracy on the Browns: While We’re Waiting
August 24, 2016With the college football season less than two weeks away, Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer took to the podium for the first time in over a week. While this week is all about getting game ready for the season, next week will involve installing the game plan and scouting report for Bowling Green, who will be the Buckeyes first opponent in the 2016 season.
The scarlet and gray may have lost plenty of talent on offense, including on the outside, but Meyer seems to have an idea of who will step up this season. He not only stated that Curtis Samuel — who will play both wide out and running back — is the top play maker on offense right now. Noah Brown, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, is the top receiver, and Parris Campbell will also start on the outside for Ohio State’s offense.
Along with the receivers, unless there is a dramatic change of events this week, redshirt freshman Mike Weber will be the starting running back, alongside quarterback J.T. Barrett.
Plenty of the young Buckeyes may still be battling for starting jobs, but the head coach seems to be happy with where his team is at thus far, especially on Monday, per Eleven Warriors’ Eric Seger.
“A really good day. I just like coaching this team. They’re very hungry. Anxious to learn and get better.”
Prepared to have a much more balanced offense this season, Meyer admitted that depth across the offensive line is one of the major things that concerns him heading into the upcoming season. If a starter goes down, second-string players are currently “not good enough”, but he hopes that will change in the coming weeks. Although depth may be an issue, true freshman Michael Jordan — no, not that Michael Jordan — is expected to start at left guard.
Gareon Conley may have one cornerback spot locked up, but Meyer admitted that the other could be a cornerback by committee in terms of playing time, with Denzel Ward, Marshon Lattimore, and Damon Arnette all ready to get playing time opposite of Conley.
While the young Buckeyes are still fighting for starting spots on both offense and defense, Meyer knows that he has plenty of talent across the field. Many may be down on Ohio State this season due to the fact that they lost so much talent following last season, but the head coach believes that his team has The Edge to make a run at yet another College Football Playoff spot. (Kirk Herbstreit agrees.)
Coincidence or not, he spoke to the media less than an hour after the Buckeyes received commitments from two of the best wide receivers in the Class of 2017: Five-star recruits Tyjon Lindsey and Trevon Grimes. The No. 6 Buckeyes open the season September 3 at home against Bowling Green at 12 p.m. ET

Meyer is such a good coach. Because of the fact that everyone jocks Nick Saban (and he is great, don’t get me wrong) I think Urban Meyer might just be underrated. He’s got two fewer titles but he’s also 13 years younger than Saban, and in his prime right now.
