August 29, 2016Heading into the 2016 college football season, the Ohio State Buckeyes already knew who three of their captains were: quarterback J.T. Barrett, center Pat Elflein, and linebacker Raekwon McMillan. Over the weekend, head coach Urban Meyer named four additional captains, bringing the total for the upcoming season to seven:
- Linebacker Joe Burger
- Cornerback Gareon Conley
- Defensive end Tyquan Lewis
- Offensive guard Billy Price.
While Meyer and the rest of the coaching staff selected the first three captains soon after the Fiesta Bowl in January, the four latest captains who were named were chosen by a team vote.
Burger, who came to Columbus as a preferred walk-on has not only earned his scholarship, but will be one of the Buckeyes three starting linebackers this season. The redshirt senior has played in 34 games, including every game the last two seasons, and has totaled three tackles (two solo) and one tackle for loss.
The only returning defense back for the Bucks this fall, Conley will be depended on to go up against the opponent’s top wide reciever week in and week out. The redshirt junior has played in all 28 games while donning the scarlet and gray, including starting all 13 games in 2015. In two seasons in Columbus, he has attained 65 tackles (45 solo), one tackle for loss, seven pass breakups, and two interceptions.
Many may not know because of former Buckeyes defensive lineman Joey Bosa’s dominance while at Ohio State, but Lewis led the team with eight sacks last season. The junior has totaled 63 tackles (34 solo), 16.5 tackles for loss, and 8.5 sacks in 28 games (13 starts that all came in 2015) in his career so far in Columbus.
Last but certainly not least, Price will enter his redshirt junior season has started on the Buckeyes offensive line his previous two seasons as well. While he is on the offensive line, he can’t accumulate many stats, but has helped block for running backs such as Ezekiel Elliott along with protecting the pocket for Barrett again this season. Price and Elflein will help lead Ohio State’s young offensive front in 2016.
