Recap of the Top Matchup of the Week
St. Edward 28 Pine-Richland (PA) 27
St. Edward’s first game off of their 2015 state championship saw them pitted against Pine-Richland of Pennsylvania, who was led by Notre Dame quarterback commit Phil Jurkovec. The game was a back and forth matchup with the result being decided with less than two minutes to go. Trailing 27-21 in the fourth, the Eagles put on an impressive go-ahead drive, behind the talented running of running back Curtis Szelesta, who capped off the drive with a 26-yard touchdown run. St. Edward went up 28-27 with that touchdown and was able to get the stop on defense to cement the win. Szelesta was the star of the game, running 29 times for 207 yards and three touchdowns. It was an impressive win for the defending Division I champs, who lost many starters from their 2015 team.
Best Performance
Archbishop Hoban beating Canton McKinley 42-14
Archbishop Hoban returned off their 2015 Division III state championship victory by playing a tough Division I opponent, Canton McKinley. The game was a close one half, with Hoban leading 21-14, but in the second half, the Knights outscored the Bulldogs 21-0 to take the game, 42-14. The Knights were led on the ground by running back Todd Sibley, who rushed 30 times for 175 yards and a touchdown. Ohio State quarterback commit Danny Clark was also outstanding, accounting for five touchdowns in the game. It was a big win for the Division III champs.
Biggest Surprise
Glenville falling to Euclid 13-7
There were no huge surprises in Week 1, but Glenville falling to Euclid was a mild one. The result was not the biggest shock, rather the defensive shutdown of the Glenville offense was the biggest surprise. Both teams are really talented and formidable teams, so neither team was the clear favorite. But, Glenville was shutout on offense, scoring their only points on a 61-yard fake punt run. Euclid put on a great performance, shutting down the talented Tarblooders offense on their way to a 13-7 victory.
Best Individual Performance
RB Isaiah Gullick, Mentor
Mentor put on an impressive performance in Week 1, taking down Massillon Washington 57-31. The Cardinals stellar offensive display was led by running back Isaiah Gullick. Gullick rushed for 238 yards and four touchdowns, along with an additional receiving touchdown. He was the centerpiece of the Mentor offense that scored 57 points against a good Massillon team.

Top Matchup(s) Next Week
No. 4 St. Edward @ No. 1 Archbishop Hoban
Friday 7 p.m.
No. 2 Mentor @ No. 5 St. Ignatius
Saturday 7 p.m.
Week 2 has two huge matchups that can change the landscape of Northeast Ohio high school football. The first game is on Friday between St. Edward and Archbishop Hoban. It is a battle of the 2015 Division I and Division III state champions and one of the matchups of the year. Can Hoban take down another Division I, this time the powerful Eagles? It will be a battle of experience for Hoban versus the near inexperience of St. Edward, who lost so much talent from last season. I am picking Hoban to take down St. Edward.
The second matchup comes on Saturday between Mentor and St. Ignatius in Parma. Mentor showed an incredible offensive explosion in Week 1. So can the Wildcats stay with the high scoring Cardinals? St. Ignatius will need to have a stronger secondary than last season in order to slow down the Mentor offense. Against my allegiance as a St. Ignatius alum, I am going with Mentor to win the big game.
