C-Cap Recap: More Than Enough Broom
May 6, 2016Tyronn Lue: “There’s no place in our game” for Charles Barkley’s comment
May 6, 2016All I want to do is talk about the Cleveland Cavaliers. I’m still incredibly hyped up by the historic game we got to witness on Wednesday night in Game 2. Even though all I want to do is talk about the Cavaliers, I don’t have any idea what to say about them.
I love it all. I love the media attempting to make a mountain out of LeBron answering a directed question about the Miami Heat and pretending like it’s something. I love the response a few hours later when everyone on the team – including Mo Williams – became a part of Cleveland Cavaliers and NBA history. It’s not that compelling however. I just thought I’d lead there so you wouldn’t think poorly of me for talking about Johnny Manziel and the Browns a bit. My focus is so very much on the Cavaliers, but it’s just a big joy with little to discuss. Brian Windhorst has said frequently about the Cavaliers during the regular season that we don’t want to see him in Cleveland because if he’s here it’s probably some kind of news that is bad. That’s kind of how I feel about discussing them, even after an historic record-setting shooting night. Let’s hope their playoff run continues to be this way with basically nothing to talk about.
Courtroom Johnny Drama is Far Away From Berea…
What a relief it must be in Berea this week. I know there are a lot of new faces in those freshly rehabbed offices,1 but you have to think even they understand the residual negativity that was continuously wiped, mopped, dried, and probably Febrezed on a near constant basis when Johnny Manziel was a rostered member of the Cleveland Browns. It’s like owning a boat without any of the fun. Between the engine breakdowns and the constant cleaning of seaweed and green goop off the boat, you feel like it’s a whole lot of work to go for a cruise, let alone try out the old water skis. Now as Johnny Manziel deals with his legal issues in Texas, the Cleveland Browns are an afterthought to the story. Their name has “former” firmly planted before it in almost every single instance. There’s nary a reason for anyone in the media to ask a question about Johnny Manziel because everything that the Browns had to say about him has been said already and no new history is being made next to that Browns bullet point in his ever-growing Wikipedia page.
It’s not an achievement for the Browns, mind you, but it’s worth discussing. We’ve been on the rollercoaster with the Browns over the years, peaking with problem children and valleying without them and thinking maybe the surplus of choirboys is hurting the won-loss records. Mangini clears house, and we pretend like the Browns are too nice and too disciplined. It’s true that sometimes attitudes and off-the-field issues run parallel with talent in the NFL, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. The Browns don’t need to succumb to the compromise of character in order to find talented players. For every Johnny Manziel, there’s a Russell Wilson. For every Kellen Winslow, there’s a Tony Gonzalez. For every Braylon Edwards there’s… well… there’s a guy who can run and catch.
Across all the players over all the years, no team is immune. I know that nobody gets to have a perfect record in anything. Even model organizations like the Steelers and Patriots end up with some issues from time to time. For them, Aaron Hernandez is an exception, and more often than not, issues are seemingly dealt with decisively. Belichick uses the first convenient moment to rid his roster of Chandler Jones and his incident with synthetic weed. The Steelers worked with Ben Roethlisberger to get through his issues, but they seemed to know their limits and traded Santonio Holmes after some brushes with the law. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, but there’s a limit in terms of bad apples.
While the Browns have had different varieties of bad apples over the past few years, from Johnny Manziel and Justin Gilbert to Dwayne Bowe and Armonty Bryant, it’s easy to say that given the standings and the coaching turnover it was too much. There’s no secret formula here to say how much is enough, or how much is too much, but suffice to say the Cleveland Browns had too many problem players over the last few years. The biggest, in terms of public distraction, was definitely Johnny Manziel, and as he’s now out of the league, without agents, and fighting to stay out of jail in a Texas courthouse, it’s a relief that his story won’t have anything to do with the Cleveland Browns any more.

Posting the Scott Raab conversation again…
I liked this one a lot so I’m posting it again.
New Radiohead means old Radiohead: Maquiladora
There’s new Radiohead out there as the band released a song and a video for “Burn the Witch.” It’s really great, but every website on earth has linked to the song by now, so I thought I would go where I always go when I get back into a Radiohead groove. That’s the song Maquiladora. It was a b-side during their career, but it was apparently born as a demo before they even called themselves Radiohead. It’s so very good. One of my favorite Radiohead songs by far.
Have a great weekend everyone!

Cold play for sure is overrated but they are #2 on my list. Number 1 would have to be Kiss. Nothing more than a marketing machine disguised as a rock band and a pretty crappy one at that.
They left the world with High and Dry, that’s good enough for me.
Blasphemy!
I remember a buddy in NY, a big time Jets fan, laughing when Randy jumped to give Mangini all the power he demanded as the “competent football executive” or whatever Lerner called him then. Buddy said “Really? Mangini is your savior?” I didn’t know what he meant, given the “Mangenius” thing and the narrative that he was unfairly shafted by an owner meddling in which QB played. That whole episode confirmed that you don’t believe a coach or even an exec who attributes his problems to not getting say over personnel. More on-field problems are caused by the recently fired and insecure grabbing power to eliminate potential rivals (Mangini, Banner) than forcing guys to stay in their lanes and work their own issues.
If Hue gets immediate results, his next move will probably be try to get a bigger say. And that will be Haslam’s test: has he learned anything?
Maybe. Given we picked the WR Hue craved and the QB of his fancy, seems he has a pretty big say in that room already.
He convinced the NFL to accept Jimmy’s bid too.
but, with a brown belt because we gotta stay classy with it.
I want him lending his opinion and preferences. His opinions and perceived needs should be taken seriously. But I do not want coach as Decider, and neither should Jimmy.
I was kind of thinking that the brown stitching in the jerseys would suffice, but okay, I’ll allow the Brown belt – as long as I get oranger orange socks.
The Beatles , Led Zeppelin , Aerosmith (first 5 albums) , Lynyrd Skynyrd & the Guess Who.
sounds like you’re into the blues … i have recently come to have a great great admiration for Johnnie Winter … great great guitar player.
You had a baseball exec, a lawyer, a 28 year old personnel guy and Hue in the war room. What bigger say can the guy have?
hi NORV … i’m not a huge Kiss fan … but , they obviously have the formula to be successful … i think you or I would trade places with them in a heartbeat.
So does McDonalds…..
it is only my opinion that the Stones are a terrible live band … and yet they are voted the greatest rock band of all time … i would choose the Beatles & the mighty Zep.
LMAO !!!!
then Pink Floyd , Rush , Black Sabbath , Van Halen , the Who , Stevie Ray Vaughn , Uriah Heep , Bob Seger , Heart , Chicago , the Beach Boys & on & on …
Every home in America knows them and most cannot name a song by them. I would wear any amount of makeup and sell out to any extreme for a fraction of the money and fame they have. Does that sound American or what??
It also looks like your are a Jimmy Page fan. I think he is complete genius. I love playing Zeppelin on the guitar and he is one of the biggest factors of me playing guitar. My childhood would not have been the same without Zeppelin.
though i have come to appreciate the talent of Keith Richards … he is better on guitar than most people think.
i think Bob Dylan was was of the only ones that never did it for me … it may be blasphemous , but it’s that way for me. i think “like a rolling stone” was voted the greatest rock song of all time … i can live with that … “stairway to heaven” for me.
excellent … i play guitar in a local band here in Toledo … i am 54 years old , so i am stuck in the 60’s and 70’s when it comes to music.
i know many Kiss songs as i grew up with them … I’ll prefer Led Zeppelin , the Beatles & Aerosmith to anything.
Page used so many various tunings on songs … The Rain Song is brilliant … Achilles Last Stand is a masterpiece from the entire band. i could go on & on all day …
agreed. and he’s played with practically everyone too. some great stuff out there from him.
orange cleats, but brown spikes too
agreed.
Ha! I lived in Toledo. I mostly grew up in Temperance Mi. I’m 44. But I have been in Oregon for +20 years. WRIF in Detroit probably has the same set list they did 30 years ago…It’s funny because the music we grew up with is a little different than what was heavy played on the west coast. All guys liked their music hard in the mid west.
I’m mostly Chicago blues these days. Muddy, Wolf, JB Hutto and H.D. Taylor. Yes, I play a lot of slide.
As long as orange laces.
