2016 NFL Draft: Mel Kiper sticks with Carson Wentz to the Browns
April 7, 2016RG3 has learned from his past mistakes as a Redskin
April 8, 2016It’s been a busy time in my world and I needed a pinch-hitter last week. Thankfully Bode stepped in and I’m grateful for that, but I’m back. I’ve got takes so scorching hot that they’ll melt your telephones which are really more like mini-computers and tracking devices designed to steal your privacy with your permission one “convenience” at a time.
It’s that kind of week, man. Run-on paranoia. Let’s get into the WWW.
Enjoy Rogue One because the “meh” could be coming soon to a theater near you…
Everyone else in the world has posted it, so I’ll post it too. It looks incredible. The initial footage of the first Star Wars prequel since Disney took over is Rogue One and it tells the story about how the Rebellion acquired the plans to the Death Star ahead of (decades-old spoiler alert!) Luke Skywalker and crew destroying it. It looks great. I almost can’t wait to see it. I will appreciate it including all the hype, but I’m here to be a bit of a wet blanket as well. Enjoy it while it lasts.
We’ve seen how this story ends. It’s going to be a fun ride with Disney taking over the Star Wars franchise. They reset the table with The Force Awakens, and it’s great that they were able to do this for us. We deserved it. The world deserved it. Star Wars deserved it. But it’s an unapologetic machine now and just like the Lorax taught us.
And, for your information, you Lorax, I’m figgering
on biggeringand BIGGERING
and BIGGERING
and BIGGERING,
turning MORE Truffula Trees into Thneeds
which everyone, EVERYONE, EVERYONE needs!
It’s going to get too big to be a reasonably big fan. Either you’re a crazy die-hard or you’re conscripted to casualness. The only thing more biggered than the movies will be the merch and specialty items that will be produced in such quantities that they’ll never carry much more than sentimental value. And the movies too will get pumped out with such regularity that we’re sure to get some mediocre offerings. Yes, we were underwhelmed by George Lucas’ prequels, but this is a new landscape where we know The Force Awakens is possible. It’s also the same company that gave us The Avengers, so let’s just say there’s a Thor 2 in there.
Say what you want about Thor: The Dark World critically – and I will, but I have to admit it was successful in terms of making money – $644 million worldwide. It got a 78 percent rating from fans on Rotten Tomatoes too, but with just 67 percent from critics, you have to go back to the ill-fated Hulk movie starring Ed Norton back in 2008 to find a more “meh” Marvel movie offering. Things could be worse, of course. But just enjoy Rogue One and all the Star Wars offerings while it’s still fresh, new, and exciting. There’s likely a “meh” or worse coming and it will be disappointing.
Chris Clem talks about Wrestlemania and the Cleveland Cavaliers…
I love that Dave Sterling introduced us to Chris Clem. I always give Dave credit because otherwise he’ll cry to me behind the scenes in text messages that I stole his guest. Not much of a team player, that Dave Sterling. Anyway, THANKS DAVE. Is that enough? Sheesh.
Chris Clem is a comedian who lives in Chicago, but he’s from Cleveland and he’s nice enough to come on our podcasts to talk. He’s even been to my basement once. Chris road-tripped with some friends to Dallas for Wrestlemania and he gave us the inside scoop from the nosebleeds. We also talked about the Cavaliers and it was a really fun conversation.
Your weekly moment of soccer zen…
I don’t know if this is zen-like, but holyholyholyholy something….
Kevin Devine says there’s more Bad Books coming so we listen to It Never Stops on a loop…
I honestly listened to Bad Books of my own volition the day before Kevin Devine made an announcement that there was more Bad Books coming. Bad Books is an indie rock super group featuring Kevin Devine and members of Manchester Orchestra. It’s an indie-rock Lennon and McCartney. I love listening to the records and guessing whether Kevin Devine was the primary songwriter, or if it was Andy Hull. It Never Stops is by far one of my favorite Bad Books songs because Kevin Devine is a great lead singer, and if you can get Andy Hull on backups it’s seriously almost a can’t-lose proposition.

Well then let me be the first to start the fire…. The Force Awakens is already your “meh” movie in the rebooting of the Star Wars phase.
Wildly hailed as great for being fairly competent in my humbles of opinions. It rides the soundtrack nostalgia and trailer envy not many other movies get the bandwagon for but falls horribly “meh” everywhere it tries to take you. Abrams is already not the greatest of directors and the handcuffs Disney put on him only hindered him even more. It would have been interesting to see what original ideas he could have brought to the table instead of the regurgitated, filled with coincidence 2016 version of A New Hope that Disney forced on him.
ANYYYWHOOOO……yeah, LeBron James Master of Twitter, amirite?
Rogue One looks Firefly in the Star Wars ‘verse. So hellllll yeah!

Re: the marketing- I saw a Star Wars branded cat scratching post refill the other day. because apparently the world is full of kitties who fancy themselves Kylo Ren
20 days until the draft.

This may make Bode stop talking to me forever, but I didn’t hate the Ed Norton Hulk movie
/peeks out
Tim Roth saved that movie.
(I liked it too at the time. History doesn’t treat it as well though.)
I still enjoy thoroughly the Norton Hulk movie. It is the first movie that made my younger son cry (when they were injecting him to kill the Hulk) and it holds up from the internal struggles of Banner that Marvel has since only danced around.
The Incredible Hulk disaster from Ang Lee, on the other hand….yuck.
see response to Craig below.
Yeah, it was A New Hope for a new generation of fans. It wasn’t “the best movie ever” but it delivered enough to be enjoyable. Where they take it from here is key.
Oh good so I can come out now.
Yeah I understand why people don’t like it if they’re expecting it to be like most other Marvel movies. But like you said, that’s not what it was made to be. And I really enjoyed it for what it was made to be.
The series needed a reboot after Lucas destroyed it with mitichlorians, armies of Jedis running a political coup and armies of robots more advanced than the storm troopers.
Unless the Hulk is the main character, they have to dance around it. They can’t make it a focus when he’s surrounded by 10 other characters just as important as him.
Yeah, I like how they have partitioned the different threads, which is why they work.
Iron Man – fun action w/ moral undertones
CapN – psychological action movies
Hulk – drama more than action, but action mixed in to keep things moving
Thor – fantasy
Avengers – money grab – errr, character blend w/ mostly just action (they have attempted to switch to main character focus per movie, but it doesn’t work as well as they want IMO)
GotG – campy fun
———————–
Also, this is why Planet Hulk is terrible – removes the drama, which is the basis of his character. if the two-sides don’t have inner conflict (because only Hulk in that one), then I don’t care about it.
which is why they should have made the 2nd movie that they buried.
kids love those movies though.
They need to make an Alpha Flight movie. 😀
Go take your Canadian propaganda elsewhere !
Guardian has one of the coolest costumes ever.
True. And, I’m waiting for people to start demanding a Santerians movie.
*cough cough* ewoks *cough cough*
What is worse, ewoks or…

Don’t EVEN say his name…
EDIT: Ugh, you just HAD to do it…
They need to introduce my all-time favorite…Taskmaster.
I rest my case
For the record, I think Star Wars,The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, are far superior to The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith.
Even with Mark Hamill and Ewoks.
“It’s going to get too big to be a reasonably big fan”
I’m not sure this is true. There is a whole Star Wars universe out there filled with tv shows and comics and all sorts of other media before The Force Awakens was more than a twinkle in the wallet of some Disney executive. It was already incredibly huge, and still incredibly popular. And it’s already survived its Norton-Hulk with the first trilogy.
I liked Norton Hulk just fine until Mark Ruffalo came along. He just embodies the Banner character so well–far better than Norton, IMO, when you put them side by side. The story was solid, Roth and Hurt both are great in their roles, and the CGI was good. But as you point out, the story is Banner and the internal conflict, and Ruffalo nails that.
I haven’t seen Ruffalo take on that internal conflict much yet because they’ve only let him loose in the Avengers. He has shown glimpses, yes.
I liked The Force Awakens. Sue me.
