Joe Gilbert’s Fearless 2016 NFL Mock Draft
April 28, 2016Anything to Add, Monty? – Episode 8: Draft Day with Craig Lyndall
April 28, 2016Switching things up in the final hours leading up to the NFL Draft, ESPN and Scouts Inc.’s Todd McShay has given the Browns a playmaker on the outside. And after months of seeing Laquon Treadwell’s name atop many wide receiver lists, McShay harnesses WFN’s Joe Gilbert and not only puts TCU’s Josh Doctson at the top, but slots him to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 8 pick.
From McShay’s final mock at ESPN.com:
8. Cleveland Browns* | Josh Doctson, WR, TCU
I’ve been hearing the Browns are interested in trading back again, and while I can’t officially project that here, this pick is based on them making a deal with Miami, who’s currently picking at No. 13. Cleveland lacks anything close to a No. 1 WR, and Doctson would help fix that with his terrific ball skills.
If the Browns do in fact take Doctson at No. 8, they would be passing on guys like Ezekiel Elliott (who McShay has at No. 13 to Miami) and Myles Jack (No. 16), but it would immediately provide the team with a legit threat on the outside. Thought the No. 12 prospect on Gilbert’s Big Board, he has long been the top receiver on the WFNY’s scribe’s chart.
Josh Doctson has freakish jumping ability and ball skills to be tough defend in 50/50 balls. He can out jump defenders, using his strong hands to rip the ball out of the air. He has good body control to shield defenders away from the pass, gaining the right position to make the catch. He has quickness and solid route running ability to gain separation in coverage. After the catch, he can make the first man miss and extend a play.
While it would be a surprise to see the Browns go this route with the No. 8 pick as opposed to trading down and taking the TCU product later, it would be right in line with Sashi Brown’s confidence in obtaining their player as well as head coach Hue Jackson’s preference for big, physical wide receivers.

Even though this would supposedly be “early” for Doctson according to most of the draft geniuses out there, I wouldn’t be disappointed with this pick at all. Doctson is basically the WR the Browns have been missing since they came back in 1999… the receiver who can get up in the air, battle with the CB, and come down with the TD.
If we take a WR in round 1, this is the guy I want. Otherwise, I’d be happy with Coleman (Baylor) in Rd. 2.
*ahem* there’s another guy in this draft that can do it too though plus stuff like this:

I like Treadwell as a better receiver than Doctson for moving the sticks, but I like Doctson better for red zone possessions.
What? Get caught at the 4 yard line? (Kidding. Just remarking on the stupid “slow 40” analysis.)
The “slow 40” didn’t seem to affect Alshon Jeffery, Kelvin Benjamin, Mike Evans, and any number of similar WRs. You would think NFL teams would learn that if a WR has a big body and excellent hands, he’s going to win on throws downfield.
the differentiator for me with treadwell over the usual top WR prospects is that he’s a good and willing blocker in the larry fitz mold. it speaks to football sense, commitment, discipline, work ethic, team guy.
i like doctson A LOT but simply don’t know where he is on this point.
I always think of Jerry Rice when I think of WR 40 times.
He’s definitely not as physical at the line of scrimmage as Treadwell, so this is a really good call out. Treadwell has the potential to engulf CBs on edge rushes.

Give me that guy over one-dimensional speedsters like Will Fuller all day every day.
speaking of benjamin’s
suspectdeliberate? slow 40 which led to his slide to carolina… im getting that same game-the-draft vibe from myles jack and his utterance of the phrase ‘microfracture surgery.’now lookit, if the kid is going to sulk in cleveland then i dont want him anyway.. but i suspect he’s perfectly fine and angling to land in oakland or another west coast team.
aint no one similar to mike evans. 😉
Sure. I’d be down.
I don’t know. Treadwell is so good on the fringes of the field and has no fear over the middle. I like Laquon better there too.
i like it … i am predicting a trade down from #8 & then picking treadwell , just as JOE has predicted.
the browns would have to take doctson before minnesota & cincy pick , as there’s a chance they jump on a WR …
if his knee is degenerative, then his knee is degenerative and all NFL teams know it. it read to me that he’s frustrated that some teams have taken him off their board and likely told him.
or largent , c.carter , d. clark & many others … k.benjamin is a great example.
LMAO !!!! … poor Ray … i wonder if he’ll be watching the draft ??
if it’s degenerative then he’s going to be daquan bowers part 2 and ought to slide into the second or even third round.
i always hate when analysts use oxygen with the filler “ít’ll be interesting to watch” but in this case, it willl be interesting to watch. if jack lands in miami or oakland then i suspect shenanigans.
I’d for any impact player. But my instincts are of the old “building from the inside out” school. OL, DL, LB, even Safety.
Depends on how his rehab is too though. If he’s expected a 100% recovery with a 100% chance of the degenerative nature kicking in over the next 4-6 years, then someone might take a chance in the 1st.
Could be draft games, but hard to say. Regardless, feel bad for him and Jaylon. Stinks to nearly reach the highest height just to find out you can’t scale that last wall.
Todd McShay’s final mock draft. Never thought I’d see the day. Rest in Peace Todd. They’re going to put you on a boat, squeeze a little of Mel’s hair oil and set you ablaze. Valhalla awaits you.
You mean you didn’t invite your best buddy over to watch the draft with you? 😉
If that guy makes it to Valhalla, there is no Odin.
I’m no medical expert but if Player A is 95% of Treadwell without the horrific injury, I might lean to Player A.
and I’m guessing his agent had a heart attack when he said it. Draft slots mean money to agents, and agents know that great players rarely have the same agent by second lucrative contract time. If you’re right that it’s a game, it’s a dangerous one.
p.s.: If he’s there at 8 and the Browns are too, I still take him. He’s the guy the center and QB point to and scream about pre-snap. The game changer. The guy I’ve been begging for.
ANY RAIDERS RECEIVER.
Fair enough. Where they all go then…a dumpster in Bristol Connecticut.
agree 100 percent. This kid has more heart than any player in this draft.
