Michael Brantley suffers setback, will not be ready for Opening Day
March 26, 2016Look Out Be-Lou: Cavs-Knicks, Behind the Box Score
March 26, 2016Bummed about the Michael Brantley news? Well, we have something that may make you feel a little bit better when it comes to the Tribe. After all: Fewer things are better reminders that Cleveland Indians baseball is near than watching catcher Yan Gomes turn would-be base stealers into one (or more) of 27 outs allotted to a typical opponent.
On Friday, Gomes tossed out not only one, but two members of the Arizona Diamondbacks, wasting no time by notching his first victim in the first inning.
The StatCast™ for this throw is remarkable with Gomes tossing the ball to second base at nearly 80 miles per hour from his knees, getting to the base in 1.84 seconds, nailing Arizona’s Scarates Brito who, by the way, was almost half the way to the base before the ball even got to Gomes’ catcher’s mitt.
Later in the game, Gomes was at it again. Check it out here:
In the third inning, receiving a fastball on the inside portion of the plate, Gomes completely pivoted away from the batter and still had time to gun down Brito once again with arm speed more than a mile per hour faster than the first. A heck of a play by Jose Ramirez to be sure, but Gomes’ ability to turn that inside pitch into anything close to an out let alone actually converting it is nothing short of amazing.
The Tribe will need Gomes’ bat to regain its 2014 form in addition to the backstop maintaining health as he could play a huge role in not just manufacturing runs for this team, but preventing them as well.
