November 10, 2015Saturday night’s win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers may not have been pretty, but there’s a slew of good news in the wake of Ohio State’s most recent victory.
In a game that was led by the defense, it was Buckeyes safety Vonn Bell was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Buckeyes win over Minnesota Saturday night. The junior pulled in a game-changing interception, which he returned 16 yards for a touchdown, and finished with a team-high 10 tackles against the Golden Gophers. The interception was not only a rare one for the safety, but it started out the scoring the Bucks Saturday night, and seemed to give the offense a little spark.
“I think it jumpstarted us,” said Bell of the pick-six. “I just want to be that spark and the guy that everyone looks to to make plays. So I did that and we got going a little bit.”
The interception returned for a touchdown was the second touchdown that Vonn Bell has had so far this season, with the first coming on a fumble recovery returned for a short touchdown against Hawaii. His two touchdowns lead the defense, along with pass breakups. From Rossville, Georgia, the quarterback of the defense leads the Buckeyes with 10 passes defended and is third on the team with 49 tackles. Bell’s two interceptions are tied for the team lead.
On the other side of the ball, Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer stated that, barring any unforeseen setbacks in practice, J.T. Barrett will be the starting quarterback this Saturday against the Fighting Illini of Illinois.
Barrett was suspended for two weeks (one of which was a bye) following his citation for an OVI in late October. Eleven Warriors reports that Barrett has had his driver’s license suspended, will be forced to pay a $400 fine, and must complete a three-day alcohol abuse course as a result.
