Sitting on the lead? Get that weak stuff outta here!

September 22, 2015Will it be one start and done for Johnny Manziel? Based on the (unofficial and nonbinding) depth chart released by the Browns Tuesday morning, it could be, as Josh McCown is listed as the starter.

Head coach Mike Pettine said after the Browns’ win Sunday that McCown was still in the concussion protocol. On Monday, Pettine was asked what kept McCown from being cleared; he declined to comment. He also said Monday that McCown’s status would be clarified within the next day or two.
As of Tuesday morning, nothing had changed in regards to McCown’s status.

Johnny Manziel played well in the Browns’ 28-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans, his first start of the 2015 season. He completed 8-of-15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, both of which came on long-range strikes to Travis Benjamin.
Pettine said Monday that he and the Browns coaches would discuss whether or not Manziel should keep the starting job.
“We’re going to meet on that tonight. To me, that’s the standard, it’s our weekly meeting where we evaluate every positon and where are we but until Josh is cleared there’s not much thought process there. Just because he is the starter right now with the fact that Josh is out but we’ll have the ‘what if?’ discussion tonight, see where that takes us.”
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is this: Pettine doesn’t put a whole lot of stock in depth charts. From September 10:
“Let me walk you through how we do our depth chart: (Vice president of communications) Pete (John-Baptiste) types it up and walks into my office. He says, ‘How’s it look?’ Sometimes I look at it, sometimes I don’t. It is usually a very cursory glance. I say, ‘It looks good.’ I don’t put a lot of stock in depth charts, neither should you.

“Ok, let me pull back the curtain for you guys. There’s this guy Freddy four fingers. Guy has four fingers on the right hand. Lives in Brookpark and works in a stamping plant, which is where he lost one of his digits back in ’87. Anyway, he takes all of the names of all of our players and writes them on a piece of blue card stock. He cuts each name up. Puts them in a plastic Home Depot bucket and brings them to his niece Alison. Sweet kid. She pulls the names out of the bucket and places them in various positions on a big cardboard chart. Director of Communications Jean Baptiste Pierre D’Orleans or something, he types them up and gives me the final chart. And that is how we do business here in Berea. That, and with the assistance of monkey butlers. Those guys are great.”
Another mai tai, Mr. Holmgren?
…
Is that on canvas? Glorious.
I nominate this for post of the day.
I wonder if every night the monkey butlers regale Jean Baptiste Pierre D’Orleans with jungle stories? What a treat!
Or when they used to work at Jimmy Haslam’s filling stations back in the day!
