OSU’s Joey Bosa, Joshua Perry (and Brutus) get Sports Illustrated cover
August 5, 2015Cleveland Browns Training Camp Day 5: In Pictures
August 5, 2015Fourteen years ago today, the Cleveland Indians defeated the Seattle Mariners 15-14. They trailed by 12 in the 7th inning, tied it up in the bottom of the 9th, and won in the bottom of the 11th on a Jolbert Cabrera single to left, with Kenny Lofton steaming around third base and beating Mark McLemore’s throw to the plate with a headfirst slide.
The video above borrows heavily from a Flash animation on Newgrounds which I have watched dozens of times. It’s hardly high-tech; it’s basically a gamecast (sans highlights) with Tom Hamilton’s commentary providing the soundtrack. It’s one of my favorite things in the history of the internet.
Paul Blest wrote about the comeback today for Deadspin. His lede:
It definitely ain’t over ‘til it’s over. The 116-win 2001 Seattle Mariners were one of the greatest teams, in any sport, to not win a championship. Led by Lou Piniella, the team was built for success: they boasted great pitching, an impeccable knack for getting on base (their .360 OBP was the highest in the majors), a historically good defense, and absolutely dominated the American League. Yet on Aug. 5, 2001—14 years ago today—they lost a game that should have been impossible to lose.
Here are the Tribe numbers from that game, which was started by Dave Burba and won by John Rocker.

There was more offense in that game then what the current team produces in almost a month!
I was at that game! It was supposed to be a Sunday afternoon game, but ESPN changed it to evening so they could show it on Sunday Night Baseball.
I stayed until the end (as always), but one of our foursome did bail around the 7th. Afterward, strangers were high-fiving each other all over the place. It was like ’95 again.
This is a good video that combines the audio from the flash animation with actual highlights from the ESPN broadcast. The amazing thing isn’t just that the fans stuck around, it’s how enthusiastic they were even when it was still an 8, 6, 4 run deficit. Spoiled bunch we were. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TpSxheQ6QE
The good old days.
