Mike Pettine talks to Jay Glazer at an uncomfortably small table (about Manziel)
August 16, 2015Report: Cavs sign guard Jared Cunningham
August 16, 2015Browns quarterback Connor Shaw completed 5 of 10 passes for 64 yards in Thursday night’s first preseason game versus the Washington Redskins, but his performance is being overshadowed by an unfortunate injury.
The Browns announced on Sunday that Shaw had sustained a thumb injury in the game and that he is expected to miss “an extended period of time.” It is a crushing blow to the hopes of Shaw making the team as the third team quarterback or in competing with Johnny Manziel for the second string spot. There is speculation that this injury will land Shaw on the season-ending injured reserve list.
Browns head coach Mike Pettine spoke about the unfortunate injury to Shaw through the team’s website. “I feel for Connor because he has worked extremely hard,” said Pettine. “He’s a competitor and has had a great offseason and a good camp so far. He is good for the quarterback room and it’s unfortunate that this injury won’t allow him to compete.”
It may have been a big uphill battle for Shaw to make the squad, but this injury definitely curtails any type of chance he had in trying to beat Manziel for the second string quarterback spot. The Browns are expected to only carry two active quarterbacks, so Shaw most likely needed to outshine Manziel this preseason in order to make the active roster. Shaw’s best option in sticking in the NFL will most likely be on the Browns practice squad.
In respect to the Browns, it seems set that the Browns will carry Josh McCown has the starting quarterback with Johnny Manziel backing him up as the only other QB on the roster.

Well, poop.
Hoping we still put him on the practice squad. Don’t see why we wouldn’t.
If he’s on the IR, do they even need to do that?
I believe if they put him on the IR he can’t even practice with the team the entire rest of the season, meaning if they want to keep developing him as a back up during his 3 year rookie contract he’d lose some development time. On the other hand putting him on PUP list means he’ll use a roster spot this season at some point. If after he heals another team needs a back up QB as an injury replacement I don’t think the Browns can retain him if he’s agreed to go on the practice squad. The bottom line probably is: how much do the Browns like him?
Right. I’m just thinking about roster spots. Thad Lewis is a guy that you probably want on the practice squad, if he’ll take it (but he might not, as there could be another team that has better options for him). If Shaw’s injury is really bad, then maybe the IR is the right way to go. Sure, you lose a development year, but it sounds like they might lose that anyway. If that’s the case, I don’t think I’d want to use a roster spot, even practice squad, on a guy that can’t contribute this year. Tough business.
And it’s funny that with the Browns we justifiably spend time contemplating how best to retain the completely unknown and unproven potential third string QB. Our third string guy is almost always forced into action, and the gap between Johnny and Shaw might be merely the difference in their draft status/sunk organizational cost, if that.
So true. We justifiably worry about our 4th string QB (or other team’s 3rd stringers) most years.
no. but, not sure he’ll need to be on the IR. tendon surgeries don’t seem to have a definitive timetable, so we’ll have to monitor.
Well, I’m not a physician, but I do have access to his MRI and Xray reports.
Best wishes to Connor. Couldn’t have happened to a better guy.
