February 15, 2015While the Cleveland Cavaliers have no games until next Friday, plenty of Cleveland’s hometown players are staying active during what was supposed to be the All-Star “Break.” We learned earlier this week that Saturday night would be the first ever NBA fashion show on TNT (which Cavalier LeBron James would produce) and it was revealed on Friday afternoon that LeBron James was voted Vice President of the National Basketball Players Association. Matthew Dellavedova participated in Friday night’s Rising Stars Challenge, Kyrie Irving is participating in the Three-Point Shootout on Saturday night, and LeBron James and Irving are playing in Sunday night’s All-Star game. So much for a break.
Cleveland guard/endless source of entertainment JR Smith participated in Saturday night’s fashion show, dubbed the NBA All-Star All-Style Competition, taking home the ultimate prize. In the first round of the competition, Smith wore a spectacular green pea coat, blue pants, a white button-up, and a fur that—while morally questionable—completed the look. Judges such as TNT’s Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley applauded Smith’s confidence and the end result, with the judges awarding JR Smith’s outfit a 46/50.
There were two more rounds of the competition that were mostly uneventful, but JR Smith was ultimately victorious, taking home a bow tie that doubled as a trophy.

The main highlight after the first round of outfits was when JR was asked whether he had anything he wanted to share and if he was “shaking in his boots a little bit.” Hilarity ensued. There’s certainly less discreet ways to have fun with JR Smith said, but I’ll just link to Will’s Cleveland sports-themed Valentines and let you fill in the blanks.
A lot of folks will ridicule the fashion show as a stupid gimmick that offends the sensibilities that blue collar, working class athletes have. Really, it’s a harmless bit of fun. While the NFL is the most marketable league in the world, the NBA has the most marketable and fashionable athletes. It can’t hurt a young bachelor to convince himself that he’s watching sports and to pick up a thing or two about good fashion taste. It’s hard to disapprove of JR Smith being on television more, and if a Cavaliers player is going to participate in a competition (however asinine), Cavs fans want him to be the winner, as JR was on Saturday night.
