Can the Browns find a seat on the QB carousel?
January 27, 2015On Love and the Cavaliers
January 27, 2015We told you recently about the Colts’ attempts to block Rob Chudzinski from leaving Indianapolis, and now they’ve followed that up by promoting him to keep him in the fold. I had wondered if Chud’s hiring wasn’t just a part of the coaching fraternity, but Chuck Pagano’s quotes about him show that it’s more than just “taking care of your friends” for the two of them in Indy.
“We’re excited to keep Chud in our family,” coach Chuck Pagano said. “He’s been a critical part of our operation and we’re looking forward to sharing even more success in the future.”
The Colts brought him in this year as a special assistant to the head coach, and there were teams that wanted to interview him for coordinator jobs. They refused requests, but his contract expired this week.
That’s good news for Chud and good for the Colts too, I’m guessing. In Indianapolis Rob Chudzinski gets another year with Andrew Luck and another year removed from the debacle of a one-year stint in Cleveland with Joe Banner and Mike Lombardi. It all projects well for Chud to get his next head coaching gig, wherever that may be.
I’ll always feel like Chud got a raw deal and root for him. You know, unless he ends up coaching for the Steelers or Ravens.

Good for Chud. Weird that the rumors at the time were that Chud was fired for not disciplining players the front office wanted to be turned into examples and Pettine is catching flak for not disciplining the current batch of ne’er-do-wells.
To be fair, Pettine has done plenty of disciplining by way of putting players on the inactive list: Tate, Crowell, West, Gilbert, and Gordon come to mind. That’s a lot more than anything Chud ever did.
He will probably have to get even tougher with Gilbert and our latest example of blowing a 22nd pick on a QB. But I think he’s a real good leader, maybe the best we’ve had since Sam or Schottenheimer.
P.S. Nice job spelling “flak” correctly! Don’t see that often.

I played a lot of Unreal Tournament and the flak cannon was the bomb.
But did you get promoted?
Yeah, somebody made a silly comment yesterday about Pettine being to blame about the Gordon and Johnny debacles–and I thought it was way misplaced.
Pettine is the least culpable. He inherited the roster, likely had little to no input on the draft, and dealt well with the various issues (Gilbert coming in as a first rounder and getting benched in favor of Williams, West/Crowell getting doghoused, Pettine sitting Johnny nearly the entire season, dressing down both Johnny and Gordon publically when they weren’t living up to expectations, etc).
Er… btw. What did he get promoted to?
of all of the insider information I wish I had from this previous season, knowing the RB stories would be at the top. West & Crowell took turns being either healthy inactive or not getting carries out of seemingly disciplinary reasons. Tate was actually kicked off the team for not accepting his role of being the RB3 (and playing ST) to those 2 guys who were in and out of the doghouse.
there has got to be a ton more to these storylines that we just never got to know.
PFT made no mention. He was special assistant to the head coach, so perhaps he is now senior special assistant to the head coach?
Absolutely. I suspect West was more the knucklehead and Crowell just didn’t know the plays, know the blocking assignments or do the work. And also there’s no way a Dansby or a Whitner call out rookie Gilbert if his attitude/work ethic are squared. There are definitely back stories out there.
Sometimes we find things out later, sometimes they stay in house in the vault forever. btw, some of my favorite (and most salacious) behind the scenes Browns stories were of William Green. Pure gems.
I believe he was on Secret Probation, and now he has been upgraded to Double Secret Probation… Just a hunch
I think we can all agree that Robert ‘s bl0g is astonishing. amirite?
Extra special assistant?
Oh and I meant in the media and amongst a contingent of the fans who want to blame Johnny’s slacking and Gordon’s insanity on the coaching. It was Pettine/Shanahan’s fault that Johnny never picked up a playbook, didn’t show up to practice, etc.
