December 23, 2014The Emergence of an Ace — WFNY’s Top 10 Cleveland Sports Stories of 2014: No. 4
December 23, 2014The Holiday Season is upon us, and for many, the holidays are a time of rituals and traditions. Here at Waiting For Next Year, we believe in tradition as well, and one of our personal favorites is the annual WFNY 12 Days of Christmas contest series! This is now the seventh year in a row we have done this contest, as hard as that is to believe.
How does it work? It’s simple. Every week day from now through Christmas, we will have a different contest with a different prize package to give away to you guys. It’s our small way of showing our appreciation and saying thanks for hanging in there with us for another year. Each day will feature a different, unique contest. Some will require getting a correct answer, some will be selected randomly among all entries, and some will feature haiku writing, of course. So check back every day for your chance to win one of our prize packs!
Previous Day’s Winner
Congrats to Ezzie Goldish who kind of, sort of Babe Ruth’d this prize package. Many have tried calling their shots over the years, but only one has succeeded where others have failed. How did Ezzie do it? Apparently he just had to call Mr Random Number-Generator by his proper name and appeal to his/her/its desire to see Cleveland win a Championship. Ezzie’s winning comment:
“Hmm. I’m going to say Cavs in 2015-2016, which just makes the most sense. I do think that the Browns may be contenders within two years, and the Tribe just needs to get into the playoffs to have a shot with that pitching staff, but that’s easier said than done.
As for “we can’t wait to find out who is the closest”, I thought that would have been brilliant and right in line with the blog name. That said, I’ll happily take this prize now, O Random Number Generator, and my prize when we win something will be this site having a “Rename Us!” contest.”
So congrats Ezzie and thanks again to everyone who participated. It warmed my heart to see that optimism in Cleveland sports is still alive!
On Day Ten, WFNY is once again looking to provide a basic commodity to one lucky winner. So we have a gas card from Get Go ready for you. And after you fill up your tank with all that gas, where are you going to drive to? Why not drive to Two Bucks and get yourself a nice lunch or dinner? Sounds like a plan to me! So today’s prize package is a Get Go gas card and a gift card to Two Bucks.
Today’s Contest
Well, we’ve come to the end, my friends. The twelfth day of a twelve day contest. It seems like just yesterday we were picking LeBron to be the Cavs leading scorer on a night Dion ended up leading the team. And who can forget all the glorioud haiku written in the name of WFNY? Parting is such sweet sorrow, but before we part this one last time, let us all enjoy one final free-answer contest. So here’s the question: What is your favorite sports memory? This is another contest where there is no right or wrong answer, and thus we shall pay the Random Number Generator his commission fee one more time to pick this day’s winner.
To enter, simply leave a comment in the Comments section below1 with the answer to today’s question. For example, if I were entering the contest, I would say: “My favorite sports memory, without question, was the moment in the moonlight of the Arizona desert, when Cie Grant wrapped up Ken Dorsey, spun him around, and forced Dorsey to throw a duck that safely fell to the ground and secured Ohio State’s National Championship. I was still a student then. A very, very poor student. Some friends and I poured almost all of our money into that trip and we drove all the way to Arizona for that game. And to see my school win a National Championship in person while still a student there is a memory that I will cherish and take with me for as long as my brain allows it.”
See? It’s that easy. So what are you waiting for? Go get your answers in below, and good luck!
Finally, I just want to give one last thanks to all of our friends of this site who either donated or supplied the gifts we gave out. And I want to thank all of you, the readers, for all of your great responses to the questions. I hope you guys all enjoyed this contest as much as we did. So on behalf of the entire staff of Waiting For Next Year, we want to wish every last one of you a very safe and happy Holiday season!
The Fine Print (in normal sized font) and Rules
Only one entry per person per day is allowed. This is very important. Anyone who submits more than one entry is immediately disqualified. Only one winner per household per year is allowed. Winners will be notified via email. Prizes will not necessarily be delivered by Christmas, but we will try our best to make it happen.

Didn’t we already do favorite sports memory this year? I feel like we did. Sticking with Joba Chamberlain and the Yankees getting midged out of the post-season by the Indians.
My favorite sports memory is when Andre Rison (as an Atlanta Falcon) gave my buddy and me the finger when we tried to encourage him as he was being wheeled off the field, across the roped-off Municipal Stadium concourse, on his way to the locker room and xrays. We high-fived each other, because it was the coolest thing ever.
OSU winning the 2002 national title. Nobody gave them a chance against Miami and they ended up pushing Miami all over the field.
It may not be my “favorite,” but it’s one I think of this time of year. I took my brother as a Christmas gift to the Browns v. Atlanta game in 2002. William Green broke off this huge (60 yd?) run and the place was going nuts. With the clock ticking down, we had an amazing goal line stand to hold them off and make the playoffs. Again, the crowd is rabid. It was probably so memorable because in the new era, it was most like one of my “old childhood Browns” (good, meaningful) games and got to share it with my bro.
(And at the time, I’m thinking, man, this William Green rookie is going to be something special!!)
I was thinking that, but it was just Indians. To me that’s likely the one, though: Lofton coming around third to steal home, Johnson hanging his head in defeat.
Thank you, O Random Number Generator for your kindness! May you pick me again next year!
I’ll admit to being disappointed that today’s commenters haven’t followed this obviously key lead of honoring RNG’s name…
My favorite sports memory is very general, and yet will continue (hopefully) for many years – the marriage of Indians baseball and Tom Hamilton calling the plays. It doesn’t get any better, as far as I’m concerned, than syncing up the game with the radio broadcast on a warm Summer evening.
I was at Derek Jeter’s final home game this past September with the walk-off hit to right. I will never forget that.
It has to be Ohio State beating Miami for the National Championship. Pretty much no one gave them a chance, and they pulled it off. I remember how awful it felt for those few seconds before they threw the flag on Glenn Sharpe when I thought OSU had lost and then how amazing it was when Dorsey’s last pass fell incomplete. Amazing game.
