October 13, 2014Week 7 has come and gone in college and high school football in Ohio. In college, the Akron Zips look to be a factor in the MAC and win their first league championship in many years. The OAC elite, John Carroll and Mount Union, remain unbeaten on the season. The state of Mississippi has two teams, Mississippi State and Ole Miss, in the top three of Division I college football. In high school, Mentor and Hudson are poised to meet unbeaten later in the regular season. St. Ignatius and St. Edward remain in weeds ready to make a run in the playoffs. This week’s slate of football had a lot of great and interesting games.
So let’s take a look at Week 7’s installment of the Ohio College and High School Football Roundup!
College Football
Cincinnati falls to Miami (FL) 55-34
The Bearcats lost their third straight game this week against Miami (FL). The Cincinnati defense struggled by giving up 621 total yards of offense to the Hurricanes. Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for another touchdown. The Hurricanes had three runners with at least 85 yards rushing. Bearcat quarterback Gunner Kiel threw for 355 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Bearcats fall to 2-3.

Akron beats Miami (OH) 29-19
Akron moved to 4-2 on the season with this win over Miami (OH). Zips running back Jawon Chisholm rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns. The Zips defense forced three turnovers and a safety from the Miami offense on the day. Miami (OH) quarterback Andrew Hendrix threw for 352 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception.

Bowling Green cruises past Ohio 31-13
The Falcons flew past the Bobcats on Saturday. Falcons quarterback James Knapke threw for 260 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. Running backs Travis Greene and Andre Givens both scored a rushing touchdown. Bobcat quarterback JD Sprague threw for 325 yards and rushed for 49 yards. Bowling Green moved to 5-2, while Ohio fell to 3-4.

Toledo falls short to Iowa State 37-30
Iowa State slipped past Toledo on Saturday, causing the Rockets to fall to 4-3 on the season. Iowa State quarterback Sam B. Richardson threw for 351 yards and three touchdowns. In the losing effort, Toledo running back Terry Swanson rushed for 124 and two touchdowns.

Kent State loses to Massachusetts 40-17
The Flashes remain without a win at 0-6 this season with another loss this past weekend. UMass quarterback Blake Frohnapfel threw for 286 yards and three touchdowns. Frohnapfel’s backfield teammate, running back Lorenzo Woodley, rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown. Kent State quarterback Colin Reardon threw for 191 yards, a touchdown, and an interception, while also rushing for 53 yards.

Notre Dame College falls to Lake Erie 42-35
Lake Erie beat Notre Dame College in a close fought game. Lake Erie running back Anthony Bilal had a great day with 228 yards rushing and four rushing touchdowns. Lake Erie quarterback Ryan Bitzer also added 250 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. Notre Dame College and former Willoughby South quarterback Ray Russ threw for a school record 548 yards, but threw six interceptions along with his four passing touchdowns. Notre Dame College falls to 4-2 on the season.

Malone outlasts Northern Michigan 42-35
Malone gained their first win of the season at 1-5 with a win in the first overtime against Northern Michigan. Malone running back Ronnie Beers rushed for 87 yards and three touchdowns, while also catching three receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown. Malone quarterback Kaleb Scott threw for 196 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, while also rushing for 23 yards and a touchdown.

Youngstown State falls to Western Illinois 30-24
Youngstown State lost this week, falling to 4-2 on the season. The Penguins had two rushing touchdowns from running back Jody Webb, while quarterback Hunter Wells added a passing touchdown in the loss. Western Illinois quarterback Trenton Norvell threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Dayton beats Marist 31-21
The Flyers moved to 4-1 on the season with this win over Marist. Dayton quarterback Will Bardo threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 21 yards and a touchdown. Flyers running back Connor Kacsor also added 81 yards on the ground.

Baldwin Wallace takes down Marietta 40-33
The Yellow Jackets scored 23 points in the fourth quarter to overtake Marietta on Saturday. Baldwin Wallace had a great game on the ground versus Marietta. Running back Issac Reed III rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Tyler Moeglin added 116 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown for the Yellow Jackets, while also throwing for 93 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Baldwin Wallace moves to 3-2 on the season.

John Carroll dominates Wilmington (OH) 69-0
John Carroll remained perfect at 5-0 with this win over Wilmington. John Carroll and former St. Ignatius quarterback Mark Myers threw for 284 yards and five touchdowns in the game. John Carroll running back Johnny Watson added a rushing touchdown, while his fellow running back Tommy Michals added two rushing touchdowns. Aramis Greenwood was Myers’ main target, catching six passes for 168 yards and a touchdown.

Mount Union crushes Ohio Northern 62-0
Mount Union stayed perfect at 5-0 on the season with this convincing win over Ohio Northern. Mount Union and former St. Edward quarterback Kevin Burke showed off his dual threat ability on Saturday. Burke threw for 327 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, while also rushing for 65 yards and three touchdowns. Mount Union receiver Roman Namdar was the leading receiver with seven receptions for 176 yards and a touchdown.

Hudson slips past Solon 17-10
The Hudson Explorers stayed unbeaten with this come from behind win. Quarterback Mitch Guadagni threw the go-ahead touchdown pass to receiver Colton Whited with 3:38 left in the game. Guadagni threw for 239 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for 66 yards and a touchdown. Solon was led by running back Melvin Jackson, who rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown. Hudson moves to 7-0 on the season, while Solon falls to 5-2.

Saint Vincent-Saint Mary beats Dayton Thurgood Marshall 50-35
Saint Vincent-Saint Mary moved to 5-2 on the season with this win over Thurgood Marshall. The Irish were led by running back Vince Lockett, who rushed for 178 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Tyrece Speaight added two touchdowns for the Irish, too.

St. Edward cruises past Canada Prep Academy 42-0
St. Edward moved to 5-2 on the season with this convincing win over Canada Prep Academy. Eagles running back Cole Gest rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns on the day. Eagles quarterback Brett Kean threw for 186 yards and a touchdown. Shaun Crawford added a rushing and a receiving touchdown for the Eagles.

Glenville dominates Rhodes 40-0
The Tarblooders cruised past another Cleveland Senate League team this week. Trevon Story led the charge with 99 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. The Glenville defense had two touchdowns, including a 70-yard interception return by Frank Sumpter and a 22-yard fumble return by Cahiled Worley. Glenville moves to 5-2 on the season with this win.

Mentor outlasts Brunswick 21-14
Mentor finished off the close win this week with an interception by Marc Walton in the endzone. Cardinal quarterback Jake Floriea threw for 361 yards and three touchdowns in the game. His main target was Eddie Daugherty, who had 14 receptions for 195 yards and two touchdowns. Brunswick quarterback threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Mentor moves to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

St. Ignatius beats Erie McDowell (PA) 41-10
St. Ignatius added another victory this week, moving to 5-2 on the season. The Wildcats played two quarterbacks in the game. Jacob Kucia threw for 227 yards and a touchdown, while Dennis Grosel threw for 114 yards and two touchdowns. Wildcats receiver Jack Cook had six receptions for 152 yards and a touchdown. His teammate, Cal Grbac, caught five receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Strongsville cruises past Twinsburg 34-13
Strongsville was victorious again this week, moving to 6-1 on the season. Mustang running back Dominic Lombardo ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. The Strongsville defense shut out the Twinsburg offense in the fourth quarter, allowing Strongsville to pull away from Twinsburg.

Avon outscores North Ridgeville 56-21
Avon’s offense exploded in this win over North Ridgeville. Avon running back Sonny Cooper rushed for four touchdowns on the day. Jon Maxwell added another touchdown for Avon, when he recovered a fumble in the endzone. Avon moves to 6-1 on the season.

Benedictine cruises past Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin 55-16
Benedictine had a great day on offense against NDCL. DeCavilon Reese rushed for three touchdowns on the day, while Dontez Rash rushed for two touchdowns. Star Jerome Baker returned from injury this week and scored a rushing touchdown. The Bengals move to 6-1.

Bedford beats Shaw 50-18
Bedford remained perfect at 7-0 with this win over Shaw. Bearcats quarterback Carlin Colston showed of his dual threat ability in the win. Colston threw for 95 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 43 yards and three touchdowns. Bedford running back Chawntez Moss rushed for 143 yards and a touchdown.

Nordonia topples Copley 52-19
Nordonia remained perfect on the season at 7-0 with this win over Copley. Nordonia quarterback David Murray threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns on the day. The Knights also got two touchdowns from Anthony Perrine. Copley running back Aulden Knight had a great day, rushing for 252 yards and three touchdowns.
