Joe Banner is great on Twitter, but seriously…
September 11, 2014WFNY Cleveland Browns Film Room: The Defense
September 11, 2014One Dallas Cowboys beat reporter thinks that Jerry Jones is pining for Johnny Manziel enough that the Browns ought to call him and offer him for a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
Question: All the jabbering about Johnny Manziel worries me. Jones wanted him, and if we get a high draft pick, which i am sure from what I saw yesterday we will, Jerry Jones will screw that up too or he will trade away picks to get Manziel.
Gosselin: If I were the Cleveland Browns, I’d call Jones today and offer him Manziel for a first round pick in 2015. The Browns fleeced the Colts out of their one for RB Trent Richardson last year and might also get the Cowboys to bite this year. Jones clearly has been mourning his decision not to take him in the 2014 draft. The Browns might wind up with a Top 10 pick in return for a guy who’s not even playing for them right now.
I can’t say whether or not this is a good idea or not because I’m not qualified to really analyze Johnny Manziel’s ceiling after a single training camp and a smattering of pre-season snaps. Additionally, the Browns must have liked Johnny Manziel when they selected him, and there’s no reason to think they’ve completely soured on his potential, even as he seemed to struggle with the playbook as he’s still got plenty of dynamic athleticism and playmaking ability.
All that said, if Ray Farmer is looking at Manziel’s practice tape and decides that the ceiling is lower than he thought, or that the time frame of making him work is too long, he should absolutely consider it. I’m sure Farmer already has opinions on the developing 2015 draft class including the list of potential quarterbacks, one likely to feature Florida State’s Jameis Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota.
On the one hand, the Browns would then have three first tound draft picks in 2015 which is appealing in a lot of ways. Simultaneously, if Manziel is legitimately a good NFL prospect and goes on to achieve success in Dallas, it’ll be the kind of decision that haunts Ray Farmer and the Browns forever.
All this assumes that Jerry Jones would actually part with his first round pick, which is no sure bet. For my money, I keep Manziel and roll into the 2015 draft with the two picks I’ve already got in hand.

agreed. they are likely a top5 in the draft team this year and I personally think they will be competing for the top overall pick in the draft. but, they also get to play Washington and NYG 4 times and the AFC-S.

(blush) Yeah, that’s what I do too.
Quick who is their kick returner. Grab him too
sure, go ahead and gloss over his 1st half, because – you know – he isn’t THAT bad.
But let’s really look at it: The guy is coming off of a serious injury, has no history of being a good starting QB in this league, and he stunk up the joint royally for half+ of the season so far – most importantly in crunch time.
But sure, don’t worry about the downside.
your comment is just too obviously spot-on that i don’t understand why we’re even having this discussion.
Sounds like a movie…ahem “Draft Day”
you mean, “Hello, Super Bowl? Is that you on tv again?”
Manziel would certainly be put into a good position with all those play-actions and boots that we saw from Hoyer.
Manziel would be even more dangerous because he could run off of those. If Johnny can get rid of the ball quickly he will be a very good player in this league. We know, of course, that’s hard to do. But time will tell.
Irrereirrereregardless, I wouldn’t trade him right now. why are we even talking about this?
Don’t forget, he’s local! (St. Ignatius kid!) And really, what’s the probability that he would get injured two years in a row? It just makes zero sense to hang on to Manziel, particularly if Jimmah (or Jerrah) is drunk dialing.
What’s weird is that Weeds had a perfect pocket, a line of sight from ground to rafters and a receiver 8 yards away and 10 yards open. I blame the bad sod. Penny for your thoughts, Mr. Running Back.
Where did that come from?
Cmon, what NFL team would ever trade up in the 1st round twice and trade back once all on the same day? Oh, the actual 2014 Browns did too? Well, then.

I read through the points and counterpoints. All the Farmer this or that and ceilings and JFF commodity futures and such. Ultimately it comes down to value right? I would be hard pressed to say no to a 1st and 3rd round pick. Nothing less.
yes offer JFF to cowboys but only after signing hoyer.
we also dont whether farmer was all-in on the trade-up of whether the loggains-haslam brain trust dropped an EMP device preceding the manziel pick. or something.
i’m not convinced farmer wanted manziel but suspect he didnt hate him enough to fight against him.
the time to trade him is when his stock his high.
we actually have seen a good bit of manziel and it’s clear that any success he may achieve will be via unorthodox means. he is small. he not only doesnt stay in the pocket; he cant because he cant see the field from within it.
i.o.w., we already know that manziel is a longshot to succeed. so yes, if you’ve come to this conclusion you apply that knowledge trade him now. you do not ignore those conclusions and do it your way (wait two years) and get brandon weedon value for him.
(hope this isn’t a spoiler.. it’s Draft Day dialog.)
Yep, Why keep all that talent on the sidelines, and Dallas sure seems a need for him at this point. 🙁 (and I would like to start him on my fantasy league, amen:)
as is my comment (response from other GM)
better yet. call but hang up before they can answer. when they call back to see what you wanted, apologize and say that you were calling back the Rams about Manziel, but hit the wrong button. Then, sit back and listen.
i figured something like that was going on…
Jerry’s phone gets Pilot Flying J indictment updates. And every time he screams at his flunky “Now why is it ya cain’t git me indicted?”
Yup, but for two first rounders.
Bah!! I love it. 🙂

Make the trade, you pancake eating m…
Loggains, ugh, did you REALLY have to mention that knucklehead?
No way. We’d RUIN our chance at a top five draft pick.
give Manziel to Jerry… He has stripper problems and this would cheer him up…
VY add some zing to that bing!
I see the Browns doing exactly what was written up here they’ll sit on manziel tag hoyer assuming hoyer continues to play well and roll into the draft with there two first round picks if they doing anything other than that I’ll forget the Browns even exsist
