Jerry Jones’ son “snatched” the Johnny Manziel draft card away on draft day

August 18, 2014Does anyone want to “win” this Cleveland Browns’ quarterback job? Based on the first half of the Browns’ second pre-season game against first-team defense, you wouldn’t think so. What happened?
As we all know Brian Hoyer got the first crack. You can’t necessarily blame Brian Hoyer for all the miscues that started the Browns’ pre-season game against Washington. There was an early snap and a Joe Thomas false start before Hoyer hit an unsuspecting Jordan Cameron with the football in his side before it fell harmlessly to the turf. On his second try, Hoyer had a couple of hand-offs to Ben Tate and a low third down throw.
Hoyer gave way to Johnny Manziel and Manziel didn’t do much better. He tossed to Ben Tate, threw low and incomplete and then got himself sacked. All this after being handed good field position by Joe Haden’s interception and 37-yard return into Washington territory.
After a long Washington drive, Manziel finally got the ball back at the Browns one inch line via defensive goal line stand.1 He completed the offense’s first first down to MarQueis Gray to get out of the shadow of his own end zone. Manziel eventually accounted for a drive of 11 plays and 60 yards and a punt. The drive was extended thanks to a 15-yard personal foul against Washington. Yet again the Browns’ first-team offense was held scoreless.
The Redskins replaced their first-team defense after that as Brian Hoyer re-entered the game for a Josh Gordon drop and a ball in the end zone thrown behind Andrew Hawkins. Thankfully for the Browns it did result in a field goal, but that’s hardly worth celebrating. This touchdown-less streak is starting to feel oppressive.
Washington finished the first half scoring a rushing TD to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Four total completions and 84 total yards for Browns quarterbacks in the first half.
I’ve figured out the Browns’ offensive gameplan for this year and it’s just one word.
RUN!
- The goal line stand was really impressive, by the way. [↩]

I’m at the game, and wish I could disagree with any of this.
Rex Grossman might be named tomorrow after that debacle of a first half. I thought this offense was supposed to be improved but it’s making Sherman’s and Chudzinski’s look like masterpieces!
Brutal. Just brutal. At least maybe this will shut up all the national pundits about JFF.
Bring this guy out of retirement…..
Take a hard look at Vince Young,… He can still play at a HIGH level,…. His NFL won/loss record right now is 31-19 as a starting quarterback… He has playoff experience … He’s a 2 time Pro-Bowler… He was voted 2006 NFL Rookie of the Year….. In 2010, Vince Young had a quarterback rating of 98.6 …………………………
The NFL is all about “WINS and LOSSES”…. and Vince can WIN………… ANY quarterback in the NFL with that kind of record would easily be given, chance after chance to play on an N.F.L team …… Vince Young has earned that right……. Give it to him….
Bring in Vince Young “NOW”… Evaluate him, if he’s good enough sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal… Next year at the very least, you would have a good backup quarterback…
I am excited for Manziel in long-run, but in the short-run we need to be prepared for very weak QB play. Manziel has a lot to learn, and Hoyer is a career backup. Plus we have no receivers. Its going to be a process.
Don Strock has playoff experience but you don’t see me asking to give him a call. Vince Young? Let It Go (cue RGB or bode)…
tell you who DID show up: Leon McFadden. may have played himself back on the roster.
At least we still have connor shaw!
CONNOR SHAW!
All seriousness, it’ll be harder to stash him on the practice squad now.
Whereas poor Royce Adams probably won’t be on the team by morning.
Felt like every long Redskins pass was against Adams
Yes both QB’s played bad but I think most criticism should be directed at Kyle Shanahan. This offense looks horrible. They’re making it look very difficult and everyone appears very confused
Same old Browns I guess.
Johnny Football, you can add punk to your resume’, along with immature and insufferable.
They were.
Nah one quarter I wouldn’t worry about someone stealing him.
Defense has as many TDs as the offense after two games. Deja vu?
Looking at our offense during the preseason, I honestly thought our defense would score more touchdowns. I’m sad to say that as of now it looks like I am right. My only hope is now in how vanilla offensive plays tend to be in the preseason.
I hear Kosar is still available…
That’s what I couldn’t help think. What happened to Hoyer that he now looks clueless out there? The whole offense is a mess. Maybe RGIII and Cousins are the 2 smartest QBs in the whole country or Shanahan is messing this up.
i think the hoyer criticism is overdone. you want to say that first three and out is on him? really? the OC cant have a crisp three play package ready at the start of the game? hoyer hits — literally hits — receiver with the ball and that, i guess is a bad pass. hoyer puts ball right in gordons chest coming across middle — does not expose gordons ribs coming across the middle — and gordon still alligator arms it. throws ball at hawkins feet tough catch but nfl receivers are supposed to catch those. you want to say the TD pass was behind wide open hawkins, fine. i think hoyer saw a DB coming and tried to back shoulder him to avoid the interception cuz ya know –> NO MISTAKES ARE ALLOWED ELSE JFF.
hoyer’s the guy. name him the starter. get him ready. end the nonsense.
as lucky as the browns seem to have been in finding pettine at the very end of coach hiring season, the shanny hire looks like a problem. (and dont get me started on loggains.)
The consistency of the message is amazing. I’d assume it’s a spambot, but I can’t figure out what it’s selling. Work with Vince Young from home and make $8000 / week, maybe?
“How do you feel about the execution of the offense?”
“i’m in favor of it.”
was that john mckay?
“…the OC cant have a crisp three play package ready at the start of the game?”
THIS!!!! How does he not have this dialed in and set to get the offense and QB flowing?! How is there any question on the first play what the play is and what the snap count is? How have they not practiced this enough times the day before until it becomes an unconscious act? Why is the OC trying to throw so much at the 11 learning a new offense in game 2 (!) of the preseason instead of giving them a basic concept play of the offense to execute flawlessly and move on to play #2 of the game?!?!? ARGH!
JFF didn’t “win” the job. Period. Hoyer is the guy – he gets ALL of the first team reps going forward, end of story.
Yep. He had a bunch of good ones.
Dude figured out the “control c, control v” function. Too bad it’s not something worth copying and/or pasting.
Hey I remember you! Time to bring the ZING! Or whatever you said before. VY can’t play anymore, and it’s why he’s not in the league.
The OC doesn’t get false start penalties or not catch a ball that hits him. I’m not sure how those things fall on Shanahan.
But, I thought Loggains and JFF were going to wreck this league.
“Process”
Nooooooooooooooo!

But act fast, I hear they may replace it with a Tyler Thigpen Steakhouse soon.

did he neglect to add those items after the Rice game last year?
if so, I am deducting points for “attention to detail”
