Cavaliers favor Embiid, one ESPN report claims

EmbiidThe good news for Cleveland fans still recovering from months of NFL draft speculation is that the NBA draft is just a month away on June 26.

The bad news is that with the top pick secured in last night’s draft lottery, the speculation and draft talk will be pretty intense for the duration.

The morning after the lottery, ESPN’s Jeff Goodman reports that the Cavaliers have an early favorite—7-foot Kansas center Joel Embiid.

“Sources told ESPN.com that Embiid is the early frontrunner for the top pick as long as his back is OK when the team’s medical personnel is able to get an in-depth look at him in the coming weeks.”

Meanwhile, Jason Lloyd of the Beacon Journal reports that the Cavs have had Duke forward Jabari Parker at the top of their board most of the season.

And just so we have complete confusion, Chad Ford reports in his mock draft this morning that the Cavaliers will select Andrew Wiggins of Kansas.

“However, my sources in Cleveland indicate Wiggins is the likelier choice at this early stage. They feel he has the most long-term potential, helps them defensively right out of the gate, and can replace Dion Waiters in the starting lineup while adding character to the team.”

There. Glad we cleared that up.

Cowterd is on now beating the Randle drum.
I really hate that self-agrandizing windbag.

  • Ezzie Goldish

Basically, either take your guy at #1 or if PHI will give you 3+10 for it, take that and pick one of these three and get another guy (McDermott speculation!) at ten.

    And now we can wait.

  • Alex Canada

I don’t think you can pass up on either Wiggins or Embiid. Or you may end up regretting it. And certainly don’t trade out for a 1 year rental in Love.

  • cmm13

Just when I thought the complete over-speculation of draft picks by national and local media who in the end have no clue what will happen was over….

  • Harv 21

Still half-dazed from NFL silly season, Cleveland Fan waives off the trainer and staggers to his feet for more.

  • mgbode

Embiid is the obvious answer unless his back is a mess. Note: his back may be a mess.

Wiggins is the ONLY other answer allowed.

  • mgbode

let the trainer at least give you the salts. those things will perk you right up.

Apparently I need to attend the RGB school of GIF’ing.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I like Parker he’s ready to play now but it will be a tough decision IMO between Parker, Wiggins and Embiid. Embiid is the logical choice the Cavaliers have needed a low post presence for a decade my problem is passing on either Wiggins or Parker when Embiid has to develop to become a true low post presence. Man I wish the Cavaliers could have had the #1 when Anthony Davis came out.

  • RGB

Parker’s defense is worse than Cousin’s blocking.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

The Cavaliers already have their Randle his name is Anthony Bennett.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

You Cleveland fans are so picky sheesh!

  • Pat Leonard

My question is this… how can we really tell if Parker is a decent defender when he was mostly guarding centers? I still find it so weird that Coach K decided to play him there so much.

  • RGB

Ok…I didn’t get SAMMY…I better get Wiggins, dammit.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

Deja deja deja vu! Sigh, nothing learned from the last time yep you are a Cleveland sports fan!

  • Pat Leonard

Absolutely not. You keep Dougie McBuckets away from the Cavs, you hear me?

  • Pat Leonard

I do really like Randle… undersized at PF yes, but I think he’s better than AB. I wouldn’t take him over the top three options though.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I find it difficult not to like Parker or for that matter Wiggins or even Embiid. So for that reason I’m not “campaigning” I’ll just sit back and wait to see what happens. All I know is the Cavaliers must make it count period! No pressure Griff.

Parker = Derek Williams. Very similar game. Similar numbers in college. Parker was on a much better team, Duke, and a top recruit out of high school so his hype has been much higher than the little-known-until-March-Madness Arizona star

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I would agree there’s just a log jam at PF of these kind of players. Had they not drafted Bennett and not had the #1 pick coming up I’d be interested in Randle but not now just doesn’t make sense.

  • Harv 21

    cut me, Mick

  • CBI

Just make sure it’s not the bath salts. Don’t need zombie Harv eating anyone.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I liked Williams out of Arizona too so I don’t know but from what I saw of Parker this past year at Duke he looked like a much more dynamic player then Williams ever did. But again I don’t have a horse in this race I’m just hoping the Cavaliers do the right thing whatever it might be.

  • frosty

I think there are some red flags with Embiid. A back problem plus his agent trying to sway which team he goes to. I’d prefer Parker, Wiggins, or Randle.

    It will.

I’ll agree that Parker has a better handle than DWill did. Derrick was a better shooter at this point though.

  • The_Real_Shamrock

The Browns turned their draft woes around no reason the Cavaliers can’t do it too, right?

  • The_Real_Shamrock

I like Parker mid-range anyways I don’t need another big guy who thinks he can shoot 3s unless his last name is somehow L-O-V-E!

  • RGB

Did you hear that Mr. Griffin?
    DID YOU?!!

  • matt underwood

Not this bullshit again – we just got done with months of NFL mock drafts

  • steve-o

I still can’t believe we are in a position to have this conversation at all. I would have been thrilled with the third pick and taking whoever was left, probably Parker. The second pick I’d grab Embiid or Wiggins, and not complain. But since we can have anyone, let’s go with the freak athlete who does not have any health problems.

Early reports are just that. Lots of due diligence left for the Cavs to do over the next month. But, my gut says Embiid if he proves healthy, followed by Wiggins. If his back is right, you just cant pass up on a guy like that.

  • You guys remember Oden vs. Durant? The potential dominance at the 5 is always sexy, I get that. But take Wiggins and don’t look back.

  • Tron

I think we will choose Wiggins. He’s the safest pick. I like Parker a lot and think he will be great but I don’t think you pass on Wiggins. As for Embiid, I think there is too much risk. Play it safe.

Also, I agree that a big man is what we need but Kyrie will be gone soon and never count on you-know-who.

why would we replace Dion in the starting lineup with Wiggins? Why wouldn’t we replace the huge, gaping hole at SF with Wiggins and leave Dion where he is?

You’ll forgive me if I don’t have the greatest of confidence in medical reports

  • Trying again on the link…

His medical report was good enough for him to go number one as well.

  • mgbode

yeah, according to alot of reports it wasn’t (different length in legs, etc.), but Portland was willing to go with him.

man, he could have been a beast if only. and, he is definitely the downside to Embiid.
