April 11, 2014Who else would report it, but Adam Schefter? Alex Mack’s deal has reportedly been signed and it’s all pretty straight-forward.
Browns transition-tagged center Alex Mack signed his five-year, $42M offer sheet that includes $26M guaranteed with the Jaguars.

Alex Mack can void final three years of deal with promise he cannot be tagged again. Deal also includes a no-trade provision.

Alex Mack's offer sheet with Jags that the Browns now have 5 days to match pats him $10M this season and $8M in the four season after.

So the Browns are on the clock even before the NFL draft. I have no idea how long they’ll take, but I think this is probably a pretty palatable deal if they were true to their word they wanted him back. It gives Mack a good amount of guaranteed money and also the right level of flexibility for a guy who was drafted by Mangini under Randy Lerner before coming up for renewal under Jimmy Haslam and Ray Farmer. Think of it this way, to keep it in perspective. Alex Mack was in the building at the same (very short) time as George Kokinis.
This is certainly far from as bad a deal as what many Browns expected. It also continues to show how silly Mack’s agent was when he said he thought he could create a deal that the Browns would have difficulty signing. The Browns aren’t guaranteed to sign this deal, of course, but it’s not the team killer anyone would have imagined in light of the agent’s posturing.
Hopefully shortly, we can just put this to bed.

So after all that, $10mil for this year and then $8 for next?
Do it.
…. and then draft a center to begin grooming for year 3 when we cut him loose.
Does anyone groom a center?
THE BROWNS.
It does not appear the Jets groomed their center

Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like a 2014 wins without a roof
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like Pettine & Farmer is the truth
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you know what Browns are to you
Because I’m happy
Clap along if you feel like that’s what you wanna do
He’s not back on our roster, yet.
Remember who we’re talking about, here.
Goodness, I had no idea! For you see, I have been on Mars for the last decade, in a cave with my eyes shut and my fingers in my ears

Fine we’re overpaying a bit for a center. Fine this was way more hassle than necessary to get from point A to B. Fine we only kicked this can down the road for 2 years. Fine everyone is a little butthurt by the ordeal, and it will be a rocky welcome back.
But do it. Now. And tell Mack to get his candy A back to work. And then tell Demoff to go get his shinebox.
since i assume bodie is pondering how to introduce the goodfellas youtube into this (and not run afoul of the comment policy).. i’ll go this-a-way. http://youtu.be/H_lijLYuw-o?t=1m31s
You misspelled “troof.”
I’m just keepin’ it real.
Seriously what is the love affair with Mack?…..Good center with no push in the running game at all…..even if he is ALL PRO so what?…..you don’t win with centers….save the money even if this is a good deal for us to match…..move Greco and draft a OT early and OG/C later ( 3rd ) in the draft……trust me having Mack will not mean any more wins for us…..lock up the key positions….WR/CB/NT/DE etc….You HAVE to have some positions where guys are not making much money and C is one of them…..the salary cap demands that…..
IT’S SO SIMPLE
I know. I’m trying to keep a positive outlook here regardless the evidence of past scars.
It is done. Back to draft talk with opinions based on gut feelings and players having something written all over them.
our salary cap would have $40mil in room w/o Mack. I think we can afford him.
i think a ravens fan could answer that better than us having had matt birk for five years and then .. not. or ask a steelers fan what life was like without pouncey last year.
you don’t notice them until they’re gone.
Well you don’t HAVE to have a situation like that. Instead, we take the total salary cap and divide by 53–equal pay for everyone. ARISE, COMRADES, AND JOIN OUR GLORIOUS CAUSE!
OMG! Manziel scored a 32 on the Wonderlic! We have to trade up to get him!
le sigh…

Is QB not a key position?
Pure nonsense. Next thing you’ll want to do is draft a longsnapper.
Stumbled across this: http://www.spotrac.com/rankings/nfl/2015/cap-hit/center/limit-25/
If I’m reading this right and if I understand Mack’s contract correctly (it’s a stretch) Mack’s cap hit, in 2015, will not be the biggest in the league for centers.
Ryan Pontbriand is a SAINT!!!
