Kipnis leaves game with right abdominal strain
April 30, 2014Browns looking into cheerleaders for 2015?
April 30, 2014The Golden State Warriors were planning to walk out of their game against the Clippers if the players did not think that Adam Silver came down hard enough on Donald Sterling. According to Marcus Thompson, the Warriors were going to ask the Clippers to walk off with them at the tip-off. They would go through all the introductions and when the ref put the ball in the air they were going to walk off the court. Hopefully together.
I have to say, that would have been an impressive gesture of solidarity. As I thought through the potential punishments and protests that could or should have happened, the idea of continuing to play games seemed unlikely. We will never know for certain what would have happened, thankfully. Adam Silver gave the maximum penalty he could according to his office. It was swift and it was comprehensive. And I’m sure it isn’t over.

Cleveland Cavalier fans need to read this piece about Anthony Bennett. It is very well written and tells the story of where Bennett came from and the reason he is inspiring to many kids in the area.
We all hope that Bennett becomes a viable NBA player. The Cavaliers NEED that to happen. You just can’t waste number one overall picks. But if he never becomes more than a bench warmer, he will still be a hero to the poorest of poor neighborhoods in Toronto.

‘Tis the season for mock drafts. Fa-la-la-la-la. I like Mike Tanier’s work over at Sports on Earth. He’s one of my favorite NFL writers. I don’t like his mock draft picks for the Browns though. Tanier has the Browns taking Khalil Mack at 4. I’ve said that Mack may be the safest pick in the draft. I can see him in ten years being the player that everyone wishes they had taken. However, I am kind of strange in that I would love to see the pass rusher moved to inside linebacker. At ILB I would love this pick for the Browns. But I doubt that the Browns would be picking him for that reason.
At 26, Tanier has the Browns grabbing DT Timmy Jernigan and then at 35 he has them grabbing QB Jimmy Garoppolo. I can’t tell you the disappointment this would cause in me. I don’t quite get what this draft would be accomplishing.

Jimmy Fallon has been lights out since moving to the Tonight Show. He recently had Robinson Cano hiding behind a cardboard likeness of himself in his Mariners uniform- in New York City. Yankee fans on the street were told to go ahead and boo the cardboard likeness, in practice for Cano’s return to Yankee Stadium. Cano would come out from behind the cardboard while they booed. Awesome.
Speaking of Fallon, I love the lip sync battles. He had one with Emma Stone which was pretty good, but my favorite is still the battle with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Stephen Merchant. Gordon-Levitt’s Tiny Dancer is just awesome.

Re: Fallon – still say love the pieces, improv stuff, dance/lip sync battles, etc., and hopefully the show just becomes a variety show like that because that stuff really is great. But he’s an awful interviewer and poor monologue guy – for example, despite (because of?) a planned (!) interview discussion last night it was cringe-worthy to watch him interview that guy playing the Green Goblin. Until that changes, I’ll likely stick to not watching and figuring the good stuff will be posted all over Facebook.
I thought the Cano bit was interesting because it shows just how people separate their fandom from how they view people: Cano the baseball player? “BOO!!” Cano the person? “Hey man, how are you!”
This is done both ways – criticizing players that are disliked or stink despite being great people, praising players who are terrible people and loving them despite crimes they [may] have committed or horrible things they’ve done or said.
I don’t know if this is generally a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ thing – fans should separate the play from the person, but perhaps not forget that ultimately, those are people on the court/field – but it’s always been an interesting one to me.
I haven’t seen anything from the show except these type of clips (which are great), but I wondered what type of interviewer he’d be. Because he seems like a guy always itching to perform and looking for an excuse to show off his own considerable chops at any given moment. That’s not usually the best interviewer type.
So you’re saying Robin Williams on decaf.
I tried to watch Williams’ new show this season, and I certainly knew what to expect, but his character is as shallow as it gets. He spends the entire half hour bursting with anticipation over the next joke he’s going to tell. Gets old pretty quick.
thought the piece was funny, charming (no real hostility) and very well edited, what with the different types of reactions and showing the best one last.
Also, loved the complete cognitive dissonance of Yankee fans whining that a player leaves town to chase the money.
That’s a great point, Ezzie.
exactly the type I was thinking of. You can see why this personality type is attractive to the producers – they can carry the show if the guests bomb – but the format better not be too dependent on interviews, and the best guests will be those who can do shtick with the host.
The difference is that Williams is really a solo guy – the show needs to be him. Fallon is good about he just enjoys being part of a great show, so in that same vein he’s better about being polite and nice with the interviews. He’s just not good at it. And that’s also probably part of why his monologues are weak – he’s great working with/off someone, but he’s just not a solo guy.
His best solo stuff? Impersonations of others.
Ben Tate on playing RB
If Tate could hit the reset button, what would he do differently?
“I would’ve been something else, for sure. I’d have been a safety,” he says. “I had the opportunity to play it in college, but I wanted to be the guy to get the ball. I had no idea the position would be devalued, but hopefully I can break that trend.”
Great…so our big FA RB wants to play safety! OMG Cleveland can’t do anything right!>!>!>!
This could certainly be interesting as high school stars begin their transition to college football, will they try to change position from RB to anything else that would pay better in the NFL? I guess the market will take care of itself, but it’s kind of sad to think that one of the playmaker positions could see a drastic dip in talent.
I actually really like Crazy Ones and am disappointed it is going to get cancelled. But, all I care about is the jokes and elaborate setups to get to the jokes. That’s what makes the show (well, the blooper reel at the end really makes the show).
Maybe he should do the monologue impersonating a new person each day.
someone should notify Kanicki. he loves turning players into safeties.
(kidding kanick, but Ben set that up too perfectly not to spike)
I think we will see more of the Darren Sproles type players at the position. Or Percy Harvin. Or Chris Johnson. The smaller burst guys who can also handle roles in the passing game.
I don’t know that it’ll be a dip in talent, just a shift to a different type of RB as the talented bigger guys want to play elsewhere.
And, look at the quote from Tate. There is just something special about getting to carry the ball and that will always draw some players to the position regardless of potential devalued carrot in the NFL.
I’d rather have more impersonations and skits then waste 5-10 minutes on dumb jokes.
i work on 45th and am pissed that i didn’t see this!!
I thought that Cano looked like a GREAT guy for doing this skit. Wish more celebs had that type of humility/playfulness.
most kids who play football at the playground or in the yard don’t want to be safeties – they want the ball; so i am sure there will always be an ample supply of RBs.
I’d be playful with all that $$$$$$$$$$$ too!
I knew I was an original around here I wanted to be an ILB or a SS solely so I could seek and destroy!
I played OL and DL because that’s what the coach told me to do!
So in other words you weren’t very good?
I wasn’t very fast. And no, I wasn’t very good either. But hey, I got to start so I’ll take it.
I’ll still let you get the donuts!!

Donald Sterling’s daughter to lose inheritance:

I’m just curious, would a team have forfeited for walking out if the other team did not as well?
Absolutely. The real question is what would have happened if both teams did walk out?
That would have been real interesting!
