April 13, 2014Alex Mack is saying all the right things about his new contract and his relationship with the Cleveland Browns. If you expected anything less, well you haven’t paid much attention to Mack’s career.
Talking with Cleveland.com on Saturday, Mack said he is happy to still be in Cleveland.
“It’s been a long, hard road, but I’m here and I’m happy, I’m excited. I’m fired up. There’s no bad blood. Now that it’s done, I’m happy.”
When asked about the reports that he wanted out of Cleveland, Mack said “I don’t believe I ever said that.”
“Contracts are tough. It’s the business side of things and as a player my job is to play football, something I’m good at. I have agents (Marvin Demoff and Tim Younger) to do the business side of things, and it’s not always easy, but I’m happy with where I’m at.”
Alex Mack is a smart person and a smart player. This negotiating period was all about money and options. If I were a betting man, I would bet that Mack’s camp wanted the opt-out after two years but Cleveland was reluctant to include it. Once Jacksonville made the offer, the Browns were quick to match however.
That’s my guess. Not reporting it as fact.

I think your guess is right on Rick. Mack is a class act. He’s a football player. He’ll be his old self in the locker room and on the field.
This seems like a win to me. We get Mack for 2 yrs guaranteed at $9M avg. If we franchised him, we’d pay $11M and then have to follow with $13M the following year (provided he didnt renegotiate). We also still have the chance to keep him for up to 5 yrs if he is happy after 2 yrs and doesnt think he could get more in free agency.
I’ll take the guaranteed 2 yrs with potential for 3 more years, over only one, over-priced, guaranteed year any day.
The “player option after 2 years” clause could also be what his agent was referring to when he said he could get a contract the Browns wouldn’t match, if that was indeed the sticking point with the Browns contract negotiations.
This should be like a fart in the car. Let’s not talk about the horrible stench and just wait until it dissipates. I think I’d rather have complete awkward silence than to listen to excuses and spin.
So happy that the talk about Alex Mack’s contract will end, and even better, he’s also staying with the Browns. It’s a great day for Browns fans… or at least, a great moment for Browns fans. Day ain’t over yet.
Hello Alex, whats happening? Ummm, I’m gonna need you to go ahead come in tomorrow. So if you could be here around 9 that would be great, mmmk… oh oh! and I almost forgot ahh, I’m also gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday too, kay.

Someone better suck it up and roll a window down (it won’t be the driver though, he can choose which window gets opened).
For 9 million bucks a year, Alex better bear the aroma and keep his mouth shut.
