Framing the Debate: Moving Carlos Santana off Catcher
March 20, 2014Justin Masterson negotiations with Indians reportedly end for spring
March 20, 2014Having addressed the play-making areas of the team, the Cleveland Browns have appeared to set their free agent focus on the trenches. Late Wednesday, it was reported that the Browns played host to Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Alex Carrington and offensive Seattle Seahawks guard Paul McQuistan.
Carrington has long been linked to the Browns due to his ties to head coach Mike Pettine. He was reportedly slated for a big role in Pettine’s defensive in Buffalo last season before he suffered a torn quadriceps in week three and was lost for the season. The 6-foot-5-inch, 300-pound lineman is familiar with the much-disucussed “hybrid” defense being installed by Pettine and defensive cooridnator Jim O’Neil and could presumably provide depth along the line—an area that arguably has plenty of it for 2014.
McQuistan played for the Browns in 2010 (for 23 days) before heading to Seattle a season later. He started 40 games the past three seasons for the Seahawks and is capable of playing both guard spots, an area the team needs to address in the wake of shoddy play and the loss of Shaun Lauvao who signed with the Redskins. By all account, he’s a guy who can play the position, but not excel in any real capacity.
It appears that there is some competition for Carrington who has had visits with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders while the St. Louis Rams are looking to schedule a visit. Whether the Browns sign either player remains to be seen.

As long as they contractually obligate McQuistan to bring back his old look.
That dude is seriously ginger!
I want to like it because it’s funny… but at the same time is very very scary
What if Gilkey and McQuistan end up bing our starting guards? Can the universe handle two ginger guards on the same line? Can the Browns afford all the sunscreen needed for camp?
Get him Browns! He would steal the souls of other players we’re playing against!
Bookends! I like where your head’s at. And you can never have too many ginger guards. There’s always the risk one or two will immolate.
Depth on the trenches! Already got rid of some of the dregs like Lauvao and Cousins, now only Sanford remains as the drag of the DL. A solid draft pick would be an upgrade over him, Carrington a more experienced upgrade.
O’Doyle rules!
Would signing Carrington mean the end of Rubin? I feel like having Taylor, Rubin, Bryant, Carrington, Hughes, Winn, Kitchen and Bryant is just one player too much considering the amount of playing time to go around. Rubin may net us a nice draft pick if traded, and he’d become a FA next year anyway.
Trade Rubin, get a 3rd-4th, sign Carrington for 4-5mil per year. We save money, get younger, keep the solid depth and grab a mid round pick. Good idea or bad idea?
