My Cleveland Sportsman of 2013: Ubaldo Jiménez
January 14, 2014Luol Deng fine with waiting ’til summer to talk contract with Cavs
January 14, 2014As the Browns appear to have all of their eggs in Adam Gase’s basket, word has finally surfaced that the 35-year-old offensive coordinator will, in fact, interview with Cleveland once the NFL season comes to a close or the Denver Broncos are eliminated from the playoffs, a period of time that could stretch up to three weeks.
The Broncos host the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game this Sunday. If the Broncos win (they’re 4.5-point favorites), they would play in Super Bowl XLVIII at the Meadowlands on Feb. 2, so Gase wouldn’t be available to interview until Feb. 3 at the earliest.
Reports surfaced this past weekend stating that Gase, having long been a target of the Browns in the wake of firing first-year coach Rob Chudszinski, had not agreed to any interviews as his team gears up for the AFC Championship. What still remains, however, is the fact that Gase is very happy with his position in Denver and may not want any head coaching position until after next season as the opportunities are expected to increase exponentially.
Also not working in the team’s favor: Browns majority owner Haslam—connected to Gase through Peyton Manning, a Tennessee Volunteer—and CEO Joe Banner will reportedly have to convince Gase and his agent, Bob LaMonte, that he’ll have some job security after LaMonte’s client Pat Shurmur was fired after two seasons and Rob Chudzinski was fired after just one.
If we want to assume that Gase has been Plan A all along, it appears that the team has Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Packers quarterbacks coach Ben McAdoo, and recently fired Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak as fallback options. All have reportedly been interviewed to this point. Ken Whisenhunt, whom the Browns interviewed this past weekend, recently accepted a job with the Titans.

When all the dust from the Browns’ spin has settled, the fact remains that Gase is not the next Chip Kelly or even Mike Zimmer or Jay Gruden. He’s a guy with an apparently good demeanor who happened to be Peyton Manning’s offensive coordinator when the Broncos were stacked and Manning was another year removed from neck surgery. Until the Browns fired Chud, nobody was talking about Adam Gase as the next big thing.
it doesn’t mean he is not the next big thing though. it also doesn’t mean he is. I agree that it is very hard to have anything definitive on him based on what he has done.
