Francona on Masterson: “He’s not going anywhere”
December 11, 2013Video: Kyrie Irving crosses over New York’s Pablo Prigioni
December 11, 2013Apologies for no giveaway yesterday. Emergencies happen.
One of our partners again this Christmas is Gray and Company Publishers. They have supplied us with several books to include in our giveaways, and we couldn’t be more thankful. Let’s get to today’s giveaway.
The Rules:
Here’s how the giveaway works. For the next 12 weekdays we will give away a Cleveland themed prize. To enter, you need only to respond in the comment section in the appropriate manner. The winner each day will be randomly selected and notified by email. (Which means you better make sure that the email address you use to comment here is a legit one.) I cannot guarantee delivery by Christmas. We’ll do our best with the things we have in hand. Only one member of a household can enter each day, and only one winner per household during the length of this contest. Just spreading the love around.
Today’s Prize:
Today, in honor of the Cavaliers’ win last night, we are giving away a copy of Joe Tait: It’s Been a Real Ball by Tait and Terry Pluto. Not only was Tait the best play-by-play man in basketball, but he could rock a Christmas sweater as well.
In addition, we’re going to send you and a guest to a Cavs game. Tuesday, January 7th against the 76ers. Winner needs to have a Flashseats account or sign up for one in order to receive the ticket transfer.
The Cavs are lurking around that 8th spot in the uninspiring Eastern Conference playoff competition. It’s a long season, but every win counts. Hopefully they can avenge that ugly loss to the 76ers.
Today’s Question:
Cleveland has had it’s share of great play-by-play broadcasters. It is also one of the pioneering cities for sports talk radio. Today’s question: Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Comments must be posted by midnight Cleveland time in order to qualify for the drawing. Check back tomorrow at noon for the next contest. Remember, only one entry is allowed, but you may still comment to add to the discussion.

Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Herb Score: As a kid, I used to listen to him all the time. He was no Hamilton, but his calls were fun: “Manny Wamiwez with a dwive to wight field…”
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Tom Hamilton
Thought it would take a while for someone else to say Herb, but I’m on board with you! I remember thinking as a kid how awesome it would have been to bring him back the year after he retired for just the playoffs.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Hammy

Has to be Joe Tait. I could remember being in my bedroom playing with my nerf basketball hoop, listening to Joe, and pretending I was on the Cavs. Good Times!
Herb Score. No contest.
(Don’t want the prize – thus the self-disqualification.)
Tom Hamilton has been amazing in drawing people into the game and give real honest emotion.

Have to say Tom Hamilton, but Joe Tait is a close second for me.

Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Joe Tait. Used to fall asleep as a kid listening to the 4th quarter and post game wrapup. THose were the Price/Daugherty/Nance years. Good memories. Hamilton is a close 2nd.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Tom Hamilton, far and away; he isn’t afraid to call it like it is, and his homerun calls are best in the league.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Tom Hamilton, I love his passion for the game, his swing and a drive homerun call, and his ability to tell entertaining stories in a 10-1 blowout.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Hammy, hands down

As an older person, I grew up listening to Pete Franklin. I would fall asleep with my hand on the volume knob ready to turn it down if voices were raised. “Meeechagin!” “The Schwam.” He was the greatest. I even made my parents take me to The Tick Tock Tavern for my birthday for the ribs they advertised on his show.
I’ll return to the glory days of my youth: Nev Chandler. “It’s like Arkansas vs. Texas!”

Glad to see Jimmy D get some love. Tait and Score are two all-timers, and the first thing I do these days when something big happens for the Tribe is hunt down Hamilton’s call. But sitting in the Pit tailgating or home in the kitchen listening to Jim Donovan do the pregame for the Browns just can’t be beat.

Tom Hamilton! Seriously the best play by play man in baseball. Cleveland has been very lucky to have some of the best radio men in the business with Hamilton, Tait and Donovan.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
I have a tie kinda sentimental but for me these two gentleman remind me of the good ‘ol days: Nev Chandler and Casey Coleman.

The best memories I have will always be from Tom Hamilton. With having MLB TV this year and living in Atlanta it was always nice to hear Hammy calling the game on WTAM.
“10, 5, TOUCHDOWN BROWNS”
Jim Donovan is my favorite. He is so much better than most of the national sportscasters.

Jim Donovan. Every Sunday during the season I turn on Jimmy D and put the game on mute.

Hammy is my favorite with Donovan a very close second. Both extremely professional but they still don’t mind telling it like it is and not always being “politically correct”

Tom Hamilton without a doubt. I’ve listened to many radio broadcasters and none of them make it as fun and exciting as Hammy. His down time chatter is great too, always enthusiastic and witty.

It has to be Tom Hamilton. Those home run calls are legendary. He also never shies away from telling the truth.

Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Tom Hamilton w/o any hesitation.
on the west coast trips, I’d have the alarm clock radio inside the pillow cover with the volume down low enough that my parents wouldn’t see or hear it. eventually, I’d fall asleep and have those lines on my cheek from the radio. good times.

Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Tom Hamilton. Min you, I’m younger, so I don’t have as much exposure to the previous generation of broadcasters (not to mention, don’t catch many games on the radio, anyway), but I absolutely love Hammy and his home run calls. I know the unbridled enthusiasm bothers some folks but I eat it up.
Cleveland has had it’s share of great play-by-play broadcasters. It is also one of the pioneering cities for sports talk radio. Today’s question: Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
I liked Herb Score a lot, but probably Jim Donovan. His calls are very passionate in a town where passion could easily be lost. Not a huge fan of Hamilton, though. He loves to make fun of other team’s players and has some kind of issue with teams allowing a comeback when he calls a basketball game that really annoys me.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Joe Tait. No one else comes close.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Got to go with Nev Chandler. I remember rounding into a Browns fan to his calls.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
I would have to say Hammy…I remember some Herb Score, but I was probably to young to really appreciate him.
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Paul Keels. He has the best voice for calling a game I’ve ever heard…knows exactly when and how much to get excited (I love Hammy and Donovan, but they fly off the handle a little too easily for my taste).
Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Gib Shanley. Called Tribe and Browns games back in the late 60’s and 70’s. Remember him burning an Iranian flag on-air during the Iran Hostage Crisis. A man’s man and insightful commentator

Who is your favorite all-time Cleveland sports radio personality?
Tom Hamilton; I didn’t listen to enough of the Tribe on the radio as a kid to remember much of Herb Score.

I shared a room with my brother who is quite a bit younger than me. We had a old 1970’s era stereo with a turntable and box speakers in our room. The tuner display lit up, which doubled as a night light. We turned the stereo down so you could barely hear it and left it on all night. Usually went to bed around 9:00 on school nights, which was perfect to catch the end of the game and post game show when the Cavs were at home. Fell asleep many nights to the sound of Joe Tait’s distinctive voice. There was nobody better.
