December 19, 2013While We’re Waiting… Mike Brown leads Cavs turnaround
December 20, 2013Pitching prospect Trey Haley was designated for assignment on Thursday by the Cleveland Indians to clear room for the official signing of new closer John Axford.
It was clear over the past few days that some 40-man roster move had to be made to clear the necessary space. Last Friday’s acquisition of David Adams completed the roster. This week’s swap of Drew Stubbs for Josh Outman meant that a reliever was likely the choice.
Haley, 23, was the Indians’ second round pick in the 2008 draft, signaling yet another failed selection by the Cleveland front office. In his first full season in Double-A in 2013, he struggled with his control, walking 39 against 46 strikeouts in 44 innings en route to a 4.70 ERA. He was converted to full-time relief duty in 2011. He’s struggled mightily with injuries as well over the last few years.
A 6-foot-4 right-hander out of Central Heights High School in Texas, he was signed to a $1.25 million signing bonus. That entire 2008 draft class now looks dreadful, however, with disappointing third baseman and first-round pick Lonnie Chisenhall by far the best of the bunch.
Based on the longevity of Haley’s Indians career and his struggles, it’s certainly plausible that he’d return to the organization on a minor league deal. He was added to the 40-man roster 13 months ago to avoid being poached in the Rule 5 Draft.

so, the good news is that we are so terrible at drafting that it’s likely noone will want to steal our draft picks when we DFA them.
Hooray for silver linings!!!
Funny how we heard, during the season, how Good Haley was looking. Now that he’s been DFA’d, we hear how bad he looked. When he resigns, we’ll hear how good he was looking again. Franchise clearly has no one that can estimate talent.
