Backcourt Harmony: Can it be achieved?
December 21, 2013MLB Free Agency: Shin-Soo Choo signs massive 7-year deal with Texas
December 21, 2013It was first mentioned earlier in the week that Browns wide receiver Davone Bess was battling some personal issues and was away from the team this week at practice. Now, with two games left, we won’t be seeing Bess suit up against either the Jets or Steelers. Bess was placed on the reserve non-football illness list, which will end his season. Per Mary Kay Cabot of the Plain Dealer, this has been an ongoing issue all season with a family member back in Oakland, California. To pile on to his troubles, Bess posted a questionable photo to his Instagram account yesterday afternoon while away from the team which has since been deleted.
The Browns acquired Bess in the offseason on draft weekend, swapping their fourth and fifth round picks in last year’s draft for Bess and Miami’s fourth and seventh round selections. They then signed him to a 3-year, $11.5 million contract extension with about half of that being guaranteed. He has been an overwhelming disappointment this season, catching 42 passes for 342 yards and 2 touchdowns, both of which came in the Baltimore victory. One week earlier, he fumbled a punt return after Travis Benjamin was injured earlier in the game that cost the Browns a chance to tie the game against the Chiefs late in the fourth quarter. He has been a relative non-factor of late, and he ranks 4th in the league in drops with nine.
With Bess out, we’ll likely see more of Josh Cooper and Brian Tyms on Sunday. Tori Gurley is currently on the practice squad as well. With tight end Jordan Cameron ruled out of Sunday’s contest due to concussion symptoms, Jason Campbell’s going to have a few less options in the passing game.

Bess is a bum. Has been all year. I’d waive him the day after the season. Another Banner / Lombardi flop. Perhaps the top flop In this wasted season. But,hey, some in the twitter world analyst camp see this as progress. Do you know what progress is? Winning ball games. Get it together Haslam. I am a 25 year season ticket holder and, as fun as it is watching you turn over the bottom 15% of the roster every week, it makes for lousy Sundays. We deserve better than this. Plain and simple.
I am guessing the love-Lombardi twitter browns draft crew (or whatever they are called) will be falling all over themselves yammering about the progress of Garrett Gilkey and Jamoris Slaughter’s redshirt year. Get real. We punted with cap room. Lombardi has been a failure everywhere he has been. Hold him accountable or we are doomed for the same.
Go Browns!
Dude…. Get a grip or go back to Cleveland.com or get a massage…
Why, because he is tired of a losing team?
“Another Banner / Lombardi flop” – I can’t help but say, that’s a fairly short list sir. I’m not jumping on the bandwagon, but they are not Holmgren bad or anything. I’m not sure if I read one credible news source that said Bess was a bad pickup for the browns. Sometimes that happens.
Wow – I appreciate the support and I wish more had the guts to question the status quo. I love the Browns, probably too much, but I can’t sit around and watch the browns fan drafting twitter crew applaud Banner and Lombardi for trashing our season for the opportunity to possibly draft the right QB in the draft. Folks, we’re from NE Ohio. We know football better than most regions of the country because we watch it on Friday nights, enjoy it on Saturdays and live and die with it on Sundays. When we all watched Ohio State, did any of us think, “That Reid Fragel should be on a 53 man roster at the next level?” Probably not. Just like when I attended games in Athens, Ohio, I never thought that Julian Posey would definitely be an NFL player. Far from it.
How about having Reid Fragel active and using him as an eligible receiver? He can catch the ball since he played TE at Ohio State. Maybe more gimmick plays run by MarQueis Gray, especially if Campbell can catch and run.
Almost everyone (including me) loved the Bess pickup before the season. He stunk this year sure, but will most likely be fine next year, and no matter what else was a good pickup based on the statistics of the situation.
Great! He finally got sat down. Not so great to see he’s now posting pictures of himself firing up a blunt. Just the kind of “veteran mentor” that Josh Gordon needs in the locker room. Please get this clown outta here.
