November 18, 2013Veteran free-agent starting pitcher Tim Hudson, a potential target of the Cleveland Indians, is expected to sign a 2-year, $23 million contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Steve Berman first wrote this afternoon that the two sides were close to an agreement. Reports earlier in the week had indicated that the Giants — who previously re-signed Tim Lincecum to a 2-year, $35 million deal — were hot after Hudson. Now, it appears the deal is nearly done.
Two weeks ago, it was reported that Cleveland manager Terry Francona had reached out to Hudson by phone. The Indians were listed as one of the leading contenders for the 38-year-old, along with AL Central foe Kansas City.
Hudson was 8-7 with a 3.97 ERA in 21 starts this past year for the Braves before a gruesome ankle injury in late July. The three-time All-Star returns to the Bay Area where he started his MLB career from 1999-2004 with the Oakland Athletics.
The Indians continue to be on the hunt for veteran starting pitching help. More likely than not, free agents Ubaldo Jimenez and Scott Kazmir will not return. That leaves the team with just four returning starters: Justin Masterson, Corey Kluber, Zach McAllister and Danny Salazar. Expect the Tribe to remain in the rumors with nearly every second-tier starter on the market.

Sounds about right
2yr contract for a 38yo pitcher whose numbers have been in consistent decline (last 3 years) and is coming back from injury. Baseball contracts never cease to amaze.
His strikeouts kicked back up this year, while his bb and hr rates stayed the same. If the doctors OK his ankle, I’d guess he’s a pretty decent bet. The issue is how will all the GBs he generates would have looked in front of our infield defense.
