Good to see a local Browns writer settling in the WWL: “For the Cleveland Browns, it’s back to Brandon Weeden. For this season. But the fallout from the knee injury to Brian Hoyer that will keep him out for the season goes far beyond 2013. Because it puts the Browns back in the quarterback quandary they were in when the season started. At that point, Weeden was a guy about to be 30 on a one-year tryout. A new regime always prefers its own guys, but it was willing to give Weeden a shot as it pondered the future of the quarterback position.” [Pat McManamon/ESPN.com]
Vote here to share your feedback to send over to the Browns about the all-brown uniforms on Thursday. Personally, I loved them. What did you think? [Dawgs By Nature]
Really gut-wrenching read on Browns and dads: “‘“Punch to the gut,”’ is a cliché used often while receiving difficult news. Never have I understood this more than when I learned that my father had been diagnosed with Stage 4 terminal cancer in June. I felt our pain was shared. My insides twisted, muscles ached, and eyes burned. Death was not an aspect of life I had ever faced. Death was a headline, a Facebook Status about a grandparent, or losing the family pet.” [Daniel King/Full Court Press]
Giving Northwestern its credit leading up to tonight’s game: “I always sort of feel bad for Northwestern in its rare, big, home games. In most games against a Big Ten powerhouse, Ryan Field will be overrun with opposing fans; Chicago is a natural destination for Big Ten alums, and a team like Ohio State probably has more fans in the city than Northwestern. Saturday’s game will be at a new level. It’s not the game of the past, where Northwestern plays patsy to a top-10, unbeaten, national contender.” [Matt Brown/Sports on Earth]
Nicely done by a WFNY friend to collect these opinions of Wildcats alumni: “Leading up to this weekend, I noticed something pretty incredible. Nearly every Northwestern fan or alum I spoke with could not stop talking about Evanston hosting ESPN’s College GameDay and the Wildcats’ matchup with Ohio State on Saturday.” [Martin Rickman/SI.com]
Beginning a series on how the Indians can improve for 2014: “Like many things, the Cleveland Indians season ended too soon. After a wild ride that ended with a 10-game winning streak to complete the regular season, winning the first Wild Card spot and hosting the Tribe’s first playoff game in six years, Cleveland finished the season as Major League Baseball’s hottest team. However, Alex Cobb and the Tampa Bay Rays needed just one win to extinguish the energy and enthusiasm behind the Tribe. Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to Tampa ended the Indians’ season while it was at its peak.” [Mike Brandyberry/Did The Tribe Win Last Night]
Yup, this definitely bugs me too. Thought it was only the World Series? Or not. “Baseball players are still doing that stupid champagne thing in the clubhouse, and every year it bothers me, and every year I let it go. Because who wants to be the curmudgeon complaining about those silly young men and their rascally celebration? Not me. Not until this year, when the Tampa Bay Rays did it twice in 48 hours.” [Gregg Doyel/CBS Sports]
Fair points on comparing Indians’ and Rays’ attendance: “Why Do You Bash on the Rays, but Not on Indians Fans? Cleveland ranked 29th in attendance this season after the Miami Marlins got a strong push from playing the Tigers in their last series of the season at Marlins Park. While Progressive Field was sold out for the AL Wild Card game against the Rays, it’s one of the only shining moments at the gate all season for Cleveland. In fact, as the Indians were coming down the stretch in the dogfight with the Rays and Rangers, they had some of the worst attended games of the season for the league.” [Maury Brown/The Biz of Baseball]
Finally, keeping perspective on the Tribe’s 2013 accomplishments: “Sometimes perspective is everything. Perspective is what many Cleveland Indians fans are now searching for after Wednesday. Some seem to have the perspective that the Indians’ run to the postseason could be considered a flop. Maybe there is some truth to that. After all, the Tribe was shutout 4-0 by the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Wild Card Game, and some of the numbers are just staggering:” [Steve Orbanek/Indians Baseball Insider]

I would agree to save the celebrating until you win the World Series. If not, celebrate today, lose tomorrow
