NFL News: Browns re-sign Josh Cooper, Desmond Bryant practices

Wide receiver Josh Cooper signed again with the Cleveland Browns today as the team prepares for life with Brandon Weeden back at quarterback.

Cooper, a slot receiver at Oklahoma State who caught eight passes for the Browns last season, was released just last Monday. Then today, the team signed him back to the practice squad and released linebacker Justin Staples.

In other practice news for the Browns, defensive end Desmond Bryant returned to form today. He left Thursday night’s game in an ambulance because he was experiencing shortness of breath. It appeared to be a scary incident, but it’s good to see he’s back at work.

Running back Chris Ogbonnaya (concussion), linebacker Jabaal Sheard (knee) and linebacker Quentin Groves (ankle) all worked out with trainers in various regimens today as they continue their roads back to health. Defensive lineman Billy Winn (quad) did not practice.

pretty funny how directly Cooper’s career depends upon Weeden’s status. Every starting QB should have his own uniformed valet.

It’s kind of sad though. Cooper isn’t a horrible receiver, he’s just hitching his wagon to Weeden it seems.

I love the perfect turn of the phrase, “as the team prepares for life with Brandon Weeden back at quarterback.” It’s resigned…almost like we’re preparing for a prison sentence…or post-accident, being wheelchair bound.

I think he’s hitching to whoever wants him. So far that’s just us when Weeden’s playing. He’s fringe, probably here as a hedge against an injury to Bess.

More importantly WHO IS THE BROWNS BACKUP QB?

  • Kildawg

Campbell is the backup, followed by MarQuies Gray. Don’t forget that he ran several types of offenses as a QB with the Gophers.

  • Ezzie Goldish

Which is why it was odd that officially Devone Bess was considered the third string QB on Thursday night and not Gray.

At first I was thinking that it’s great how the Browns can use the FA market to switch up practice squad players each week without worrying too much about the players being signed, but more likely it’s related to Weeden-Cooper.
